Wheels Of Confusion

Beowulf, recast as a saga of children enriched by a legendary toy-and-candy hoard, set upon by the killjoy Grindle whose mere touch can change them into pimply teens or buttoned-down fun-hating adults.
It's surprisingly good at capturing the spirit of the original poem, right down to the lineage of kid "kings" from the founding of the hoard and their tree house, Treeheart, to the time of Grindle's strike. Every page is replete with alliteration upon kennings, and the art is gorgeous.
The writing is adapted by Zach Weinersmith (of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal notoriety) and the art is by Boulet in striking black-and-white. Every picture feels larger than life.

I loved the book, I even bought the French version for my (still) not-english-speaking kid, and it was awesome too. I usually only have harsh words for translations, but this one was a work of art.

Boulet's style makes the world come alive, and matches the epicness of the tale perfectly. There are words about a sequel (only the first third of Beowulf's story is covered by the book), and I'm already sold on it.

For me it helped that I recently read a translation of Beowulf so the story was fresh in my mind. I love how Beawulf keeps close to the original, but making it completely different. I ended up gifting a copy to my neighbor who gave me a copy of his favorite translation of Beowulf.

In non-wulf related news, I'm now up to ~2010 in my Avengers read-through. I'm currently working through "The Heroic age" arc, which seems to not have anything common with one another. Still it gives me a chance to read some stuff I haven't read before.

No comics for anyone else in the past 6 months?!
ORLY?

So Saga is terribly good. It's been sitting on my shelf for the better part of a year.

After reading through what will happen in a nuclear conflict, I needed something NOT that. I finally picked this 1300 page behemoth out of the shelf and decided to give it a go.

I'm 7 chapters in to the 54. It is VERY, VERY good. Several laugh out loud moments, lots of "wasn't expecting that!" times as well. And this thing goes from light hearted to dark-as-fuck at the drop of hat.

I am enjoying it immensely.

I also blazed through and finished the follow on to The Last Ronin, the TMNT project. It was detailing the years that Mikey spent off by himself before the events of the main book. It was.. not as good as the first. But prequels usually fall a bit short, if for no other reason than you know where they are going.

Finally, have I been sleeping on DC this whole time? I normally ignore most things from Marvel and DC because I'm not all that interested in the established characters in their superhero cupboards.

But DC apparently is also publishing a lot of very interesting "indie"-esque projects?

First up on my list that I want to pick up is Bodies, the basis for the Netflix/BBC show. Four time periods, the same body discovered in the same alleyway in each one. The EXACT same body. I watched the first episode of the show, was intrigued. Looks like they use different styles for each time period in the book. It was a limited run thing, and my local B&N has a copy. I'll be picking it up on my next run through there.

Second? The Nice House On The Lake. I read about the follow-on over on Polygon, gave the original a glance. Interesting premise for the story, good looking art. Want to pick this one up too.

Both DC published, both NOT part of their establish stable of *supe things. I wonder how many interesting / fun / terrifying stories I've pass up on simply because I saw "DC" on the binding.

My pull list has been pretty generic for the last few months. I keep meaning to go through the previews book to see if there's anything new I'm sleeping on but haven't managed to do so.

  • Power girl - I like the character but still doesn't feel like DC exactly knows what they want to do with her.
  • Blue beetle - Sorry Ted fans but he needs to stay dead so Jaime can move forward. The Horizon as the Tok'ra of the Reach is interesting and having them show up seeking asylum adds a nice "alien nation" vibe.
  • Green arrow - I'm begrudgingly reading this, the first handful of issues was Ollie time/space hopping around every time he got close to one of his family members. That's finally over and now the plot of being blackmailed to work for Waller is... Ok.

I'd picked up the 12 issue gargoyles run. Mostly split between a "who's who" and a "where are they now?". Art was great and the writing was pretty good too. Major plot was Eliza and Goliath having to admit in a very public matter their feelings and what ramifications that has. I was turned off by the absolutely insane amount of variant covers Disney commissioned I stopped counting one issue had around 35 different covers. I won't ever own more than a single cover but that kind of thing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Undiscovered country I think is ongoing but I haven't gotten a new issue in a couple months. It's image though so who the fuck knows...

Saga is still on my pull list but I think they've only put out a handful of new issues in the last two years which is pretty annoying. Again Image, hiatus' and sporadic issues are (still) kind of their thing.

Oh also forgot these two:
  • Ms. Marvel: mutant menace. I can't decide which is the dumbest thing marvel has done with this character: killing her off in someone else's book, having a one shot tragedy porn issue of her funeral knowing full well she's being resurrected, resurrecting her as part mutant putting her in the middle of all that mess. The continual erasure of the inhumans just feels petty at this point.
  • She Hulk - everyone's favorite green single female lawyer is... Not so single anymore?!? It's a bit soap opera-y but I'm ok with that.

I haven’t read this yet (though it’s also on my to-read pile) but if you like it (and horror comics in general) you owe it to yourself to check out Something is Killing the Children by the same writer.

Humble's got quite a TMNT bundle up right now, though it's Kobo which probably means some legwork to deDRM it into a format you can actually use.

Actual removal of the DRM didn’t take nearly as long as the amount of time I spent trying to find instructions on how to do it. There is a recent post (in the last month) in the callibre subreddit that will save you a ton of time.

Wrapped up Saga, Compendium 1 (chapters 1-54). All 1300 pages of it.
Wow. That was a whole thing. And the way those last two, three chapters go? Holy shit!

I will now be picking up a copy of Volume 10 and 11, to get fully caught up. Looks like the last chapter in Volume 11 (66) was published in September of 2023.

And they have Volume 10 at my local B&N, but not 11. But! I'm switching to a shift that is awake during the day star hours next week - will have the time to drive to the one about a half hour away to pick up 11.

I have two other TPBs on the shelf, ready to go:
1) Bodies, which I mentioned in the Netflix/Streaming thread. I was intrigued as hell by the first episode of the show, saw it was based on a graphic novel, and... well, I now own said graphic novel :p.
2) Blue Book volume 1, a product of James Tynion IV, and about alien abductions. Oh boy! Recommended by the Chilluminati podcast last year, saw it and decided I was ready for some obvious BS and weirdness.

Latest trades read:

Blue Book Volume 1. I like the stark artwork. It’s basically three tones - two blues and a black. Just sort of fits. Otherwise it‘s the story of the Betty & Barney Hill Abduction (wikipedia for those not brushed up on their alleged alien lore). It was a neat, if limited way to tell the story.

Saga Volume 10 & 11. And the hits just keep on coming for Hazel and company. Apparently the next issue may drop this month, after SDCC!
