Karen’s 5-star review: Their afternoon tea set are such good deals! It is all the way till 7pm, could make a great dinners too! Club sandwich combo with fries- So filling! There are 3 pieces of bread in the sandwich (cut into 4 triangular portions), eggs were so smooth too!. The fries are so fresh and crispy, I especially like the garlic powder they sprinkle on the fries. Highly recommended! Pork chop ramen- huge piece of pork and good size ramen, although a little tough, still well seasoned. There are ginger bits in the soup, making it unique from the regular seasoning flavors of instant noodles. You also get to pick a dessert to come with the afternoon tea set. I actually like coming here for afternoon tea now, since it is less crowded and you get to order from the afternoon tea menu but get dessert at the same time! -
Karen’s 4-star review: First pastry store when you walk into Stonestown. Store is not too big, but most people do not sit here for long so you should have no problem getting seats. It is a cute cafe for quick meet ups but I don't think it is good for working or studying (simply too distracting with people walking in and out, and the cozy ambiance). I tried the hot banana chocolate, since many of my friends highly recommend it. The chocolate itself is not too sweet and is not too watery, so it is good. However, I was expecting to taste more banana flavor. There are hints of banana flavor but definitely not strong enough, though it is still a very special hot chocolate drink. Their desserts also look very delicious too, so I will definitely come back and try some if running errands around Stonesstown! -
Karen’s 5-star review: This is my go-to crepe place every time I am around Japan town. There are many crepe place in the same mall structure but Sophie's Crepes is the best in my opinion. I like their black sesame, hazelnut and green tea ice cream. It is always difficult to narrow down the flavor I want... I recommend the Japanese crepe, which is kind of far down near the bottom of the menu as one of the special items. It is basically a crepe with green tea ice cream, some red bean and matcha sauce. The matcha sauce is SO amazing! It is strong in matcha flavor, while the ice cream is more on the 'green tea' flavor side. However, you can get a green tea ice cream crepe with less the price, which is equally good. I am still on the fence about whether the matcha sauce and red bean is worth the extra few dollars, but if you haven't tried it you should! I would say all their ice cream flavors are pretty good, so you can't really go wrong. If you do want ice cream, it is best to get the ice cream with crepe instead of just ice cream in a cup. With about the same price, you get a bigger scoop of ice cream AND the crepe so it's a better deal. I can't wait to come back for more Sophie's Crepes! -
Karen’s 4-star review: Their pie shake is a must try. I personally am not a big fan of 'shakes' let it be milk shake or pie shake, but I actually enjoy the pie shake from Chile Pies Baking Co! I ordered a pie shake with regular apple pie and caramel ice cream, hoping that at worst it would taste like apple caramel candy, but it was WAY better than that. The pie is blended just right, so you can taste bits of apple pies chunks, giving it some chewy texture. The consistency is quite thick, so I use a spoon to eat it instead. It does taste like apple caramel ice cream with apple pie crust, while the ice cream is soften and smooth from the blending. One portion is very filling, so I would suggest to split with a friend. Also, beware if you are lactose intolerant because my friend felt some stomach discomfort afterwards. The interior has gotten smaller, there used to be more seating areas. Parking is also kind of difficult to find around this area. I will definitely come back to try some more creative combination of pie shake! -
Karen’s 4-star review: Nice cozy dessert place on Irving st, cute interior and nice owner! There are only enough seats for maybe 10 people? But most people don't sit down and eat, so there should not be problem getting a seat. I got a red velvet cookie with green tea ice cream. The cookie is on the hard side but it is not too sweet. The green tea ice cream was decent, not too sweet. I really like that their ice cream sandwich is on the light side, so you can actually taste the flavor from the cookie rather than being masked by sugar. The lady owner is super nice, giving us suggestions on different dessert options when we seemed indecisive over what to get. She is so warm and friendly, and asked how we enjoyed the food. To be honest, the ice cream sandwich is slightly above average but I will come back because this is a really nice small business with lots of passion and personality! -
Karen’s 3-star review: Hong Kong style dessert place in Richmond district, menu is similar to the Hong Kong dessert chain 許留山. Plenty of tables inside, it seemed a little slow and quiet when we came. The key to Hong Kong style dessert is MANGO. I tried the mango sago with coconut milk, and popcorn chicken. The drink was around $3.50 for a good size and there were bits of real mango in it, fairly standard for mango dessert. I could taste the coconut milk in the drink, and it wasn't too sweet, which is good. The popcorn chicken was too much flour too little meat, the quality is below average. For Hong Kong style dessert, Creations Dessert House is not too bad, just above average, but there are many other similar restaurant in SF. Given its location and spacious interior, it is worth coming back for late night snack or a hang out spot. -
Karen’s 4-star review: This is a hidden gem on Irving Street, as It is a small candy shop easily overlooked. I always get their milk tea, requesting less sweet. Their milk tea is heavy on the tea flavor, the closest one to authentic Hong Kong style milk tea I have tasted around the area. It is very strong too! sometimes I get the milk tea instead of coffee, and it works very well. I have only ordered this one drink, but I highly recommend their milk tea! -
Karen’s 4-star review: Great service and environment. We got here at 8 pm and there were plenty of tables and comfortable chairs. We only ordered one brick toast- the macaroon party. The waitress let us know that it would take 20 mins for the brick toast to get ready, but it still felt like a long time with the heads up...We were allowed to pick 3 ice cream flavors, so we chose strawberry, coffee and green tea. When the brick toast finally came, it looked exactly like the picture in the menu. The waitress was nice enough to give us some time to take selfies and pictures with the food before helping us cut it open. It was delicious! Ice cream were ok, like the store-bought quality, but the toast was warm and fresh, perfect for dipping the ice cream. It was the perfect amount for 5 girls, since it is quite filling. They also have self-serving lemon water, great to cleanse your palate after the sweets. Good dessert/ hang out place if you are in the area! -
Karen’s 3-star review: This is a great place for late night dessert as it opens till midnight. The interior is clean, modern and nice! The menu and decoration is very much like the Honeymoon dessert chain (滿記甜品) in Hong Kong. I have tried the mango sago with green tea ice cream and the mango dessert with black glutinous rice. Presentation of dessert is great, I would say almost identical to the pictures in the menu. For the mango sago with green tea ice cream, the dessert base is a little blend. I expected more coconut milk flavor and pomelo. The mango black glutinous rice dessert on the other hand, was quite sweet. The base tastes like melted vanilla ice cream, and the vanilla flavoring was overpowering. The black glutinous rice was good though, the sweetness is just about right, and it is not too chewy to eat. For both dessert, the mango is tasty, sweet and not sour. There are other better quality options at lower price in SF, but Sweethoney is a great hangout place in East bay, although the dessert does not taste as good as they look. -
Karen’s 4-star review: Hidden gem on Taraval Street, the exterior of the store is unremarkable and there are only a few small tables inside, but the gelato is pretty good! They have all the standard gelato flavors, and some special Asian fruit flavors such as mangosteen, dragonfruit, and durian. I got a small cup with 2 flavors: Venetian coffee and black sesame, both are really good. The Venetian coffee tasted strongly of coffee and slightly sweet, and the black sesame gelato flavor is bold. $4.50 for a small size is pretty standard for gelato and their quality is pretty good, so I will definitely come back to try the other flavors for sure! -
Karen’s 5-star review: Bi-Rite's ice cream is unbeatable, it is my go-to place for ice cream in the city. The flavors are amazing! My favorite is blue bottled coffee, we always get a pint. The coffee flavor is bold while creamy, a great treat after a tough and tiring day! I highly recommend the seasonal flavors of Earl Grey and Rose, I wish they could make it regular flavors. The Earl Grey has a strong tea flavor, one of the best I had. Many Earl Grey ice cream from other places have the taste of Earl Grey (probably from extract), but not the 'tea' flavor. The Earl Grey is a great combination with Rose, with that fragrance and sweetness, makes the best ice cream for spring time! There is usually a short line outside the door, and staff are friendly and generous with tastings. Parking is tricky though, since this is a busy area with a park nearby. I always go with $4.50 for a 'single' size, that you could pick 1-2 flavors, but there is a dine in tax if you eat the ice cream there, so I get it 'to-go'. Excellent ice cream! Nothing can compare!
