Radio Valencia is an internet radio station staffed by a collective of DJs who pay dues to support the station. From the perspective of a DJ it's been a really good experience for me. I came here with zero experience, trained here and took a shift. It is truly free from radio here and you really can play anything you want to play. It's a nice studio too.... A lot of DJs however use the studio so maintenance can be an issue but things do get worked out reasonably quickly. The only management here is steering committee which I have found to be usually pretty hands off. In a lot of ways the station depends on individuals being responsible, kind and using good judgement. In my experience I have found this to be mostly the case. I recommend DJ ing here and also listening to Radio Valencia.

As a former DJ who used to air my show here,I'll be honest, and some of the people who run this station have major ego problems LOL Don't get me wrong though,I am still very cool with alot of my DJ friends there, but their "programming committee" is very anal, full of drama. They try to work you very hard and for what!? It's not like they are actually paying you. They'll take your money, work you like a dog,and if you end up rubbing them off slightly the wrong way they'll get up all in arms over some dramatic nonsense. Major ego trippin'. They get mad over some silly shit like if you accidentally dropped a napkin on their studio floor they'll get pissed off and tell you to clean up more often even when you actually do.
They are NOT on the terrestrial FM dial for one. Two,if you are a pro DJ looking for a station to join, I suggest cooler, more real stations like Free Radio Santa Cruz 101.3FM or even KFJC.
The good though is that they have a nice studio. Dr.Hal is my good friend there,so is KrOb,and many others.
The infrastructure of their "programming committee" is a joke though. They make up silly rules like "be excellent to eachother",but in actuality they hardly even obey that.(And I know they somehow cleverly lifted that "rule" from a fictitious film.) It's more about favoritism with them though, and superficial type stuff. Anyways just telling it like it is.
I don't hate them, but they can surely improve by being less pretentious. Sound quality wise they are internet only now so you'll be hearing stuff at 320KBPS at best. There's much better radio out there to be had imo.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Christopher F.San Francisco, CA2201219Aug 2, 2011First to Review
Fantastic programming serving the local Mission District residents.

For the 4th largest radio market in the United States, it's amazing how crappy San Francisco's radio stations are. There are very few eclectic stations programming the rock & roll weirdness one would expect for the home of Free Speech, hippies, and the internet. Thankfully, there is Radio Valencia, as freeform a radio station as one can find anywhere in the world. Everything from rocksteady reggae to old time country to black metal has a home on Radio Valencia, and I never bother changing the channel in my car any more. (Why? Do I really want to hear "Under The Bridge" again on that "alternative" station further up the dial?)
