There are a maximum of five levels, and you'll find that if your skillpoints are not covered by the basic Clone, points can be subtracted in the event that your ship is destroyed and your character is killed.

Learning skills is passive, and you'll find that by simply spending the time, you can become proficient. You'll see that when it comes to an EVE Online skill, it will be connected with one of the five attributes, whether that is Intelligence, Perception, Charisma, Willpower or Memory. The better the attribute that is associated with the skill you are trying to learn, the faster you will learn the skill.

As a starting character, you begin the game with a small number of core skills, which are determined by the choices you make in the character creation process. To acquire new skills, you will need to buy books that will instruct you. Some skills in the lower levels can take as little as ten minutes to acquire, while high ranking skills can take upwards of several months. Some skills will require that other skills be mastered before you attempt to learn them.
