Invented by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert
Cailliau in 1990.
The invention was while working in CERN
(the European Organization for Nuclear
Research)
Tim Berners-Lee invented both the HTML and
the HTTP protocol used to request and
transmit web pages between web
servers and web browsers.
The World Wide Web (www) is an open source of
information space where documents and
other web resources are identified by URLs,
interlinked by hypertext links, and can be
accessed via the Internet.
Important terms used in Web language
Hypertext is text which contains links to other texts.
Hypertext Mark-up Language.-HTML
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)- organization,
developing web.
Extensible mark-up language (XML)
Cascading style sheets (CSS) –define the look and style
of a site, simplifies the sites HTML files.
Bandwidth
Browser
Domain – the name by which a web site is identified,
associated with an IP. (.com, .net, .org, etc.)
Features
The amount of information available on the
Internet has become so large that it is
difficult to search for specific information.
The World Wide Web (WWW) makes
retrieval easy and quick.
Usage of links to other sites and documents.
built on the technology called Hypertext.
Hypertext is text which contains links to
other texts.
Hypertext increases accessibility to linked
documents on the Internet and helps user to
navigate between documents very easily.
Once the appropriate document is retrieved the
connection is broken, there is no need of the link
as you view the requested content.
WWW lets us search, travel across, and use many
types of information at numerous sites and in
multiple forms. This interface is called a browser.
Different Web Browsers
Major Browsers: Opera, Firefox, Safari,
Chrome.
More Cross-Platform Browsers: Mozilla
Windows Browsers: K-Meleon
Macintosh Browsers: OmniWeb and iCab
Linux Browsers: Konqueror and Epiphany
Common features
Tabbed browsing
Modern web pages with HTML, CSS, SSL, and
JavaScript
Cookies and cookie management
Plugins and Java
Ad blocking and/or pop-up blocking
Download Managers
Integrated Search
Favourites/Bookmarks and import
There are many more web browsers avail
Importance
Contributes greatly to the creation of an
ever-increasing global information database.
It provides a client-server
environment.
the ability to easily deliver information in any
format, to/from a wide range of computing
platforms.
It has Simplified access to the
Internet.
It provides access to the wide and
rapidly growing amount of
information available.
Utilities in WWW
 Including e-mail, File Transfer Protocol (FTP),
Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Telnet and Usenet,
that form the Internet.
 Web is a system of many web servers.
 Programs enables the end users to view and
teleport between web pages.
Web Consortium (W3C)
an organization founded by Tim Berners-Lee
In October 1994
the universe of network-accessible
information, the embodiment of human
knowledge.
primary goal is to make the web universally
accessible- irrespective of ability, language or
culture.
Hacking
• a hacker is someone who seeks
and exploits weaknesses in a computer
system or computer network.
• Hackers may be motivated by a multitude
of reasons, such as profit, protest, challenge,
enjoyment, or to evaluate those weaknesses
to assist in removing them.
Conclusion.in
 World Wide Web is the largest source of
information in an open platform.
Maximum availability and reachability was
considered so that lot of people will have
access to it.
Web has got several functions and lot of
contributions are involved in its development.
Information is the good for sale.

Editor's Notes

  1. HyperText Markup Language.-HTML  Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
  2. Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format which is both human-readable and machine-readable. Bandwidth - a measure of the width of a range of frequencies, measured in hertz. Browser-a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.
  3. Hypertext is text which contains links to other texts. The term was coined by Ted Nelson around 1965 (see History ). HyperMedia is a term used for hypertextwhich is not constrained to be text: it can include graphics, video and sound
  4. Tabbed browsing is a feature, that enables to open multiple websites in a single browser window. You can open web pages in new tabs. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used for describing the presentation of a document written in a markup language. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral. Java is a general-purpose computer programming language that is concurrent, class-based, object-oriented,[12] and specifically designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible.
