Web 2.0 – Join the Journey Lori Franklin ESU SLIM Kansas Summer Institute for School Librarians - 08
Web 2.0 is Like a River Flowing Far reaching Green Collaborative co-existence One destination opens up another Can be a smooth or bumpy ride Constantly evolving
Welcome! Whatever your skill level may be, it will work for what we learn about today. I hope to learn from you as we discuss Web 2.0 applications. A lot of learning about Web 2.0 and beyond is participatory and exploratory – you need to jump in and experiment with the programs, tools, software and hardware in order to grow.
Introduction & Philosophy Lori Franklin, Olathe East High School 12 years in the field at all grade levels NBCT Current ESU SLIM Ph.D. student Interested in promoting rich social capital with teen populations in school libraries. You can’t be afraid of breaking the computer! Our most useful learning occurs when we take the time to explore and make mistakes.
Web 2.0 is Pervasive My Space – 53 million visits per month Wikipedia – 43 million visits per month You Tube – 32 million visits per month Facebook – 25 million visits per month Flickr – 9.7 million visits per month Del.ici.ous – 1.3 million visits per month Clearly, people love being online and have integrated these technologies into their daily lives. eBiz MBA – Top 25 Web 2.0 sites for February 2008. http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/user-generated-content
Don’t be shocked… Guess which online reference site is ranked #1 according to the eBiz MBA editorial team? Yep…Wikipedia! See what else shows up on this list. eBiz MBA – Top 55 Reference Websites. http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/reference
Web 2.0 = Open Source Collaborative – one person creates, another user adds to the project, a different person might tweak it in a new way, and so on. Less of an emphasis on “ownership.” More emphasis on sharing. Encompasses blogging, social networking, wikis, podcasting, vodcasting, xml & rss, aggregators and widgets.
Sharing – a New Model Many Web 2.0 applications are free. This collaborative sharing model is a big step away from the typical proprietary manufacturer keeping tight control over a product (think: Microsoft). With sharing and online discussion come solutions to problems.
Blogs and Wikis Blogging is a way to publish your thoughts, dreams, aspirations, opinions, photos, etc. online in either a public or private format. The blogosphere is absolutely huge! Technorati , a site that indexes and tracks blogs, estimates that there are 112 million blogs. Others argue, saying that while many blogs are initially created, not as many are actually used. The Blog Herald – How Many Blogs are There? Is Someone Still Counting? http://www.blogherald.com/2008/02/11/how-many-blogs-are-there-is-someone-still-counting/
So How do I Start? If you are a beginner, consider a blogging service that creates templates for you. You do not need to know html/javascript in order to begin publishing your blog. eBlogger - http://www.eblogger.com/ Blogger - https://www.blogger.com/start WordPress - http://wordpress.org/

For a School Library: Library Log - http://library-log.blogspot.com/ School Libraries Wiki - http://www.blogwithoutalibrary.net/links/index.php?title=School_libraries
Why in the World Wiki? A wiki is a place where you can post information online. Others can edit and add to that information. We even used a wiki to plan our presentations for this conference! Students might use a wiki to provide discussion about a reading passage. They could also take on the role of a character in a book and describe another direction the character might have taken.
Some Examples… Teacher Librarian Wiki (started by Joyce Valenza) http://teacherlibrarianwiki.pbwiki.com/ Plymouth Regional High School Library http://prhslibrary.pbwiki.com/ San Mateo High School Library Wiki http://mateolibrary.pbwiki.com/ Penrith PS School Library http://penrithpslibrary.pbwiki.com/Core+values+fables+by+Kindergarten+2007
Make Your Own PB Wiki Today www.pbwiki.com Create username/password Receive validation e-mail from PB Wiki and click on the link Keep track of your username/password Begin creating! Note: you can add pages to the main page of your wiki.

A slightly higher margin (58 percent) of social network site users are girls. Pew Internet Poll: Social Networking Websites and Teens: An Overview. http://www.pewinternet.org/
The Sites MySpace – www.myspace.com Facebook – www.facebook.com Friendster – www.friendster.com Xanga – only being used by 1 percent of teens www.xanga.com Classmates.com – www.classmates.com LinkedIn – www.linkedin.com
