“Personal Shopper” Workshop Project

Context: Big Department Stores

The “Personal Shopper” Idea
Department Store CEO
I see people milling about the
department store, seemingly lost. People will be in
one part of the store, say men’s wear, and now want to
find shoes to match the suit they’re looking at, but where is
the shoe department? And how will I be able to match this
suit to any shoes I find in some completely different part of
the store? Same thing with furniture, appliances, everything.
People want personal assistance. I want them to be able to
quickly get answers to questions about products in the store. I
want them to be assured that we can match or beat any price in
a competitor’s store. I want them to be able to use coupons
and offers. I want them to feel like they’re being taken
care of. So, what do we do next? When we can we
launch the personal shopper?

Activity 1: Define the Problem
1.Cardstorm candidate problems
- Five-minute timebox
- Write down as many answers as you
can think of to the question: “What are
common frustrations or challenges
among shoppers in large department
stores?”
- Chunk similar cards.
- Dot-vote to prioritize.
2.Validate with business sponsor.
What problems is this idea trying to solve?

Activity 1: Define the Problem

Dot-voting
- Quickly captures trending
opinions.
- How many dots? About half of qty
items to vote on, rounded up.
- Use markers or stickie dots.
- Everyone votes at once.
- Voters can distribute dots any way
they want.

Activity 2: “Get Out of the Building”
1.Interview two members of another
team.
2.Ask them if they experience any of the
problems you’ve defined.
3.Ask them about their general habits
and desires relating to shopping in a
department store.
4.Collect on sticky notes.

Activity 4: MVP Design
1.Use your top problem + persona
as a starting point.
2.Cardstorm individual ideas.
3.Sketching timebox
4.Pitch and Critique.
5.Iterate and converge...
What is a solution that would solve a top
problem for our persona?

Sketching Timebox
- 5m timebox.
- Everyone sketches.
- No rules.
- If conducting with general
stakeholders, clarify that this is
research, not design.
- If conducting with the internal
team, the UI concepts can be the
basis for the actual design.

- Post the sketches.
- 2-minute round-robin, then open
critique.
- Take careful notes, attach to the
respective sketches.
- Look for and work to resolve
vision differences.
- (Optional) Dot-vote to uncover
trending solutions.
Pitch/Critique

Iterate and Converge
- Complete another sketching
round based on the trending
direction from the previous
round.
- Goal is to converge on a single
design solution or direction.

Activity 5: Test Your Solution
1.I’ll send around members from another
team to yours.
2.You’ll test whatever you have ready at
that time.
3.Use metrics to measure the quality of
your idea. For example:
- On a scale from 1-10, would this make you
more or less likely to shop in our store?
4.Total up your metrics and get ready to
demo!
