Introductions
Russell Shirley | Hart EMC
 Manager of Technical Services
 25 years with the Utility
 Responsible for all IT, GIS, communications, substation
maintenance and SCADA initiatives
Dean Perry | SSP Innovations
 Sales & Account Manager
 Esri & Schneider Electric Certified Implementation Partner
 Esri ArcGIS Online Specialty Partner focused on utilities
Hart EMC – Background
 1200 sq miles in Northeast Georgia
 140,000 features to inspection
 Using ArcMap since 2001
 ArcMap 10.0, ArcGIS Server 10.1
 Everything needed was already in place
Hart EMC – Business Drivers
 Needed to use existing iPads
 Needed a new inspection program quickly
 Utilize Data within existing GIS systems (ArcFM,
Reporting)
 Use as much of our resources already in place
 Keep cost low
 Be agile
The Solution – Targeted Inspection Features
 Use existing GDB for targeted inspections
 Move from versioned ArcFM class to inspection class
 Target inspection attribution by type
 Use Defaults from Existing Features
 Capture Additional Fields
 SSP Nightly Batch Suite (NBS) Application
 Automated Creation of
Targeted Inspections
The Solution – Targeted Inspection Features
 Re-projection from State Plane to WGS84 to improve
performance
 Used Editor Tracking in Server to track who and when the
inspection was completed
 NBS app picks up new records and regenerates targeted
inspections by year
 Used Domains wherever
possible
 Single run of the NBS provides fully populated targets
The Solution – Inspection WebMap
 Utilized ArcGIS Server 10.1 to publish map/feature services
to be used by ArcGIS Online
The Solution – Inspection WebMap
 Created a custom base map
 Users Had Options
 HEMC Base Map
 Or any AGOL Base Map
The Solution – Collecting Inspections
 Utilized iPad GPS for Location
 Walking Shows Direction
Collecting Inspections
 Click a targeted (red point) on map to
collect inspection
 Enter Field Data Using Intuitive Controls
 Capture Pictures as Needed
The Solution – Collecting Inspections
 As Inspections Completed  Change Color on Map
 Red  Green, Allowed for Real Time Tracking of Progress
The Solution – Empower the Data
 Reported on any Exceptions Requiring Follow Up
 SSP Nightly Batch Suite Application
 Emailed Nightly Reports
The Solution – Empower the Data
 Reports Include Picture Count & Quick View for Web
Viewer
 Also Provided Fields for Follow Up Fixes Applied
 Report Sent to GIS and non GIS Operations Folks
The Solution – Quick Demo
Demonstration
Business Value Add
 Fully Automated Inspection Application
 Got the data rolled out to field users quickly
 Utilized Data Via Reporting – Got it to Operations Quickly
 Entire Project Rolled out in Just over 1 Week
 High Return on Investment
Lessons Learned
 What Went Well
 Setting up ArcGIS Online was easy enough
 Publishing feature and map services are easy
 Issues Encountered
 The AGOL/Server combination can be complex
 Esri support for AGOL/Server is lacking
 Troubleshooting require skill we had to learn, Fiddler-jMeter

Editor's Notes

  1. Russell will now perform a quick demonstration of the solution on his iPad.

  4. Take any questions, remind them to fill out their surveys, and thank them for attending. This end-to-end solution took a new spin on ArcGIS Online inspections by using targeted inspection records in the fields. We used a ton of back office automation to create a configurable and repeatable inspection cycle. And we empowered the data by getting exceptions into the hands of the operations folks who need it the most.
