This document summarizes advice from a panel discussion on managing online personas during career transitions in science. Advice from Session Be ready with an argument to support your blog Polyblog – have an online 'professional identity' blog and a more private/support blog Dinner party test Think beyond blogs (online presence w/o blogs) Testing the waters
Advice from Session 2 Website: appearance matters rehabilitating a website presence being a human isn't always a bad thing be aware of the trade offs/risks be professional not confessional Don't let comments drag you out no tone of voice online EXCEPT CAPS
Advice from Session 3 think about how things come across get a trusted proof reader if unsure of topic know your workplace policies – help create them spell check know your rights know your boundaries sleep on it
“ I am, if we're to be honest, no longer useful to this community. I'm glad I did a post-doc - I learned a tremendous amount and adored writing this blog. But I decided to walk away from academic research. So of discussions of publication or tenure, committee meetings and mentoring issues?
