Challenges & Concerns with VMware
“Following these purchases, CA and
Symantec customers saw massive price
hikes, worsening support, and stalled
development. Symantec redirected its focus
to its biggest resellers and customers. The
company largely abandoned its customer
base of 100,000 to prioritize its top 2,000.”
Tracy Woo, Principal Analyst - Forrester
Gartner recommends
VMware users "Identify exit
ramps for deployed products,
including alternative
solutions and migration
activities."
It’s hard to believe Broadcom’s
reassurances, not because they are
untrustworthy, but because it’s hard to
see how Broadcom will make good on
a $69bn price tag for VMware without
drastic changes.
As The Register readers may remember,
VMware pushed through a double-digit
price increase on its core perpetual licensing
and support last year, effective from August
2022. This included a 10 percent hike on
vSphere, vCloud, vSAN, NSX, vRNI, and VCF.
Challenges & Concerns with VMware
UNCERTAINTY ABOUT
PRICE POLICIES
COMPROMISED
INNOVATIONS
VENDOR LOCK-IN AND
DEPENDENCY
PRIORITIZATION OF
LARGER CUSTOMERS
OVER SMALLER
What are the
Exit Ramps?
Negotiate a long-term
contract before the
VMware acquisition is
complete.
Find an alternative
solutions and define
migration activities.
From our experience working with customers, 52% of new
projects adopting Apache CloudStack, cited VMware
migration as a key driver for their implementation. This is up
from only 8% of 12 months earlier.
CloudStack as VMware Alternative
• Open-source nature
• CloudStack is a hypervisor abstraction layer
• Mature IaaS Platform adopted from small organisations to enterprises
• Constant development promoting innovations
• Build-in features designed to enable smooth VMware migration
• Vendor lock-in is not on the agenda
• Supports a range of hypervisors including vSphere, KVM, Citrix Hypervisor and XCP-ng
CloudStack
Features to
Support the
Transition
VMware Ingestion
Connect to VMware vCenter and ingest the
VMware Instances into CloudStack
Useful to replace vCloud Director by Apache
CloudStack
It also allows to convert unmanaged vSphere
environments into a rich CloudStack IaaS Cloud
VMware to KVM Migration (4.19)
Converts VMware Instances, including
disk and its characteristics into KVM
Ideal for removing dependency from
VMWare vSphere
It uses virt-v2v to convert the Instance
disks from VMWare to KVM.
Personnel Skills
• CloudStack Expertise
• Hypervisor Knowledge
• Networking and Security
• Automation and Orchestration
• Troubleshooting and Support

Scenario #1: From vCloud Director to Apache CloudStack
Apache CloudStack
Value Proposition: Potential Reduction of 30% in VMware Licence Costs.
It also reduces dependency on VMware.

Scenario #2: Managed vSphere Infrastructure
Scenario #2: Managed vSphere Infrastructure
Apache CloudStack
Value Proposition: Make Traditional Virtualization as IaaS Cloud.
Scenario #3: Mixed vSphere and KVM hypervisor Environment
Apache CloudStack
Value Proposition: Potential Reduction of over 30% in VMware Licence Costs.
It also reduces dependency on VMware vSphere.

Scenario #4: Full Migration from vSphere to KVM
Apache CloudStack
Value Proposition: Potential Reduction of 69% in VMware Licence Costs
It also removes all dependency on VMware.

Conclusions
Conclusions
For the vCloud Director transition only,
major results in terms of licensing costs
are expected. 30%
Conclusions
Considering the complete transition of vSphere
and vCloud Director, in addition to removing the
lock-in dependency, the results in terms of
licensing, the results will be very interesting.
