The web design field includes 3 areas of expertise that require unique sets of
skills. Design, client side programming, and server side programming are the 3
main areas of expertise necessary to accomplish anything good in the web
designfield – and they are very different in nature.
If you’re working on a web design & development project, or looking for a team
to work with you, this is something that is absolutely crucial to understand.
That means creating the visual representation for whatever information you want
to communicate to your users. There are many ways to go about this – some
designers use Photoshop or other software and create the entire representation
before coding it into a web page. Some use good old pencil and paper and skip
Photoshop, going directly into coding.
In all cases, designing for the web is fundamentally different than pure graphic
design. When designing for the web, you have to design while combines skills
from user interface design, marketing oriented design, design based on
conversions knowledge and understanding, web programming constraints and
possibilities, browser compatibility issues, screen resolution distribution, color
management distribution, and much more! Of course, “normal” graphic design
skills also play their part including branding, identity, color scheme, etc…

Web Designer
A Web designer is someone who prepares content for the Web. This role is mainly related
to the styling and layout of pages with content, including text and images. Web designers
use many technologies but commonly rely on hypertext and hypermedia resources
including HTML, CSS and additional Web design tools.

A Web designer will often manipulate actual HTML code. HTML is the common source
code for a Web page. Other kinds of code are added into an HTML document to
promote advanced functionality. Different kinds of tools can help to auto-produce HTML
that will result in a specific design format. A Web designer may also use Cascading Style
Sheets (CSS) to create a unified style and color scheme throughout an entire website.

Web designers are often proficient in various higher-level programming languages used
to create scripts for the Web. Many of them also focus on the ability to create goodlooking sites that will display well on a range of browsers and devices.
WHAT IS MY COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE?
Internet users will navigate away quickly if they don’t like your website, so make
sure it’s a place that people will want to stop and stay awhile.
having a great website won’t really give you a competitive edge unless people
can find it. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is critical to your online success.
For example, say you have a law firm in Cornwall that specialises in family law.
If a potential customer Googles “divorce lawyer Cornwall,” and your website
shows up on page 12, they are never going to find you because people rarely
look past the first few pages. If you want to be visible online, you need to take
steps to make your website friendly to search engines.
