 Smart meter is based on M2M communication
which enables communication between smart
device connected via Internet.
 It is about enabling the flow of data between
machine to machine.
 It uses Internet Protocol version 6 (IPV6) to
accommodate large address space .
 Comprise of device (sensor or meter) to capture
event and convert into meaningful information .
 Collection of data.
 Transmission of selected data through
communication network.
 Assessment of data.
 Respond to available Information.
Smart meter
 Electronic device that records consumption
of electric energy in intervals of hour or less.
 It involves real time or near time sensors,
power notification & power quality
monitoring.
 It uses Zigbee a high level communication
protocol to create personal area networks.

 The smart meters collect data locally & transmit via
a Local Area Network (LAN) to a data collector.
 This collector retrieves the data and is transmitted
via a Wired Area Network (WAN) to the utility central
collection point for processing & use by business
applications.
 Since the communications path is two way, signals
or commands can be sent directly to the meters,
customer premise or distribution device.

 Reading the meter and generating bill without
having a representative visit of property on a
regular basis.
 Send electronic meter readings to energy
supplier automatically.
 Faster Services
 Accurate meter readings.
 Accurate bills.
 Radiation
 Utility cost
 Shut down
 Appliance change out
 Thus a Smart Meter is a stethoscope into our home. It
intimates & give detailed information about appliance use,
residency & profiled behavior patterns.
 SMART METERS are used for accurate billing and meter
readings and sending energy consumption directly to the
energy supplier.
 In early days, the M2M apps were mostly centered on the
automotive and transport sectors and were commercial in
nature. However, their usage was more concentrated in the
developed nations.
 In time to come, M2M apps will dominate all sectors and
include banking and real estate.
