Recommendations Improve the Search Experience Project Board Meeting 1 April 2011 Activity Data Programme 2011
Project Aims RISE aims to exploit the unique scale of the OU (with over 100,000 annual unique users of e-resources) by using attention data recorded by EZProxy to provide recommendations to users of the recently introduced EBSCO Discovery Solution .
The Hypothesis “That recommender systems can enhance the student experience in new generation e-resource discovery services” Recently implemented EBSCO Discovery Solution aggregated search system Currently in evaluation stage Wide variety from course to course in the use that OU students make of our search systems Will there be variation between the levels of students in their reaction to recommendations?
Project Work packages
Work Package 2 MyRecommendations Create recommendations database Import EZProxy log files Enhance log files with data from Ebsco and SFX via APIs Add CIRCE data Create recommendation algorithms Build search interface Open release of code
Work Package 3 Open Data Aim to release the recommendations data so other users can build on it Investigate and resolve issues around anonymising the data and getting permission to release it
Work Package 4 Google Gadget Create a Google Gadget to search the Ebsco Discovery Solution Build in recommendations Provide Help and Support within the Gadget Deploy by library website and iGoogle
Work Package 5 Evaluation Aim to evaluate whether recommendations are valuable for users of search systems Survey, usability testing Key is to test the hypothesis and understand whether recommendations are of use and whether the value is different depending on what level you are at

JISC Activity Data Programme http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/inf11/activitydata.aspx AEIOU - Aberystwyth University - usage statistics from Welsh HEIs repositories and use this data to present searchers with recommendations. Agtivity - University of Manchester - collect usage data from people using the Advanced Video Conferencing services supported by the Access Grid Support Centre. Exposing VLE Activity Data - University of Cambridge - bring together activity and attention data for Cambridge's institutional virtual learning environment (based on the Sakai software) Library Impact Data - Huddersfield University -  prove a statistically significant correlation between library usage and student attainment. The project will collect anonymised data from University of Bradford, De Montfort University, University of Exeter, University of Lincoln, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Salford, Teesside University as well as Huddersfield.
JISC Activity Data Programme http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/inf11/activitydata.aspx Salt - University of Manchester - SALT will experiment with 10 years of library circulation data from the John Rylands University Library to support humanities research by making underused "long tail" materials easier to find. STAR-Trak:NG - Leeds Metropolitan University - an application to highlight and manage interventions with students who are at risk of dropping out by mining student activity data held in corporate systems. UCIAD - Open University - UCIAD will investigate the use of semantic technologies for integrating user activity data from different systems within a University. Synthesis project - University of Manchester – to draw out wider issues by working with projects and to help to define future work of the Programme
JISC Activity Data Programme Related Activities http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/inf11/activitydata.aspx The JISC RAPTOR project is investigating ways to explore usage of e-resources. PIRUS is a project investigating the extension of Counter statistics to cover article level usage of electronic journals. The Journal Usage Statistics Portal  is developing a usage statistics portal for libraries to manage statistics about electronic journal usage. The  Using OpenURL activity data project EDINA will take forward the recommendations of the Shared OpenURL Data Infrastructure Investigation to explore releasing OpenURL activity data for use by third parties

Editor's Notes

  1. At the heart of the project is the hypothesis, and JISC are interested in how we will be testing it as we go
  2. WP 2 – building the recommendations database from the ezproxy data, creating algorithms for recommendations and building a search interface WP3 – understanding if and how we could release aggregated and anonymised search data WP4 – create a google gadget EDS search WP5 – evaluation WP6 – dissemination and programme engagement with the synthesis project that has been funded by JISC
  3. Three types of recommendations People on your course are searching for this People who searched for this searched for this – matching articles found in the same search This article is like that article – subject matching
  4. For example the MOSAIC project took data from Huddersfield covering book loans and setup a competition. Entries included an example where you picked books you were interested in and the system recommended courses for you based on which courses students who borrowed the books were studying
  5. AEIOU – aim is to create more traffic on the Inst.repositories through use of recommendations. Agtivity – aim is to evaluate use of VC “nodes” and provide support where necessary. VLE – to inform management and improve the VLE
  6. SALT = Surfacing the Academic Long Tail
  7. OU taking part in RAPTOR, aware of PIRUS and have joined JUSP. RAPTOR: building a software toolkit for reporting e- resource usage statistics (Cardiff and Kidderminster). PRIUS will enable the usage of research outputs to be recorded, reported and consolidated at a global level in a standard way. JUSP a "one-stop shop" for libraries to view, download and analyse their usage reports We’ve also talked to EDINA about the OpenURL project
