LEDCs Pollution levels are often high in areas of resource extraction An economy of a country can become over dependent on a resource and will suffer when that resource begins to run out. The removal of any resource can often have a negative impact on the environment or wildlife of that area MEDCs Oil price rises increase the cost of petrol High standard of living is dependent on resource use MEDCs can afford to develop alternative power supplies (such as wind power)

The decline of coal mining in the UK Supplies of coal in the UK are beginning to run out in the UK LEDC As supplies become more difficult to mine the cost of mining increases. As a result the UK now imports some of its coal from other countries. Some areas of the UK coal areas suffer from social and economic problems as a result from the closure of many coal mines e.g. South Yorkshire Unemployment levels high High levels of deprivation Disposable income low Health care poor Many young people left these areas to find work.
