overarching theme to emerge from the research.
The concepts of enablement and maintaining
independence were seen as extremely important
and participants were aware of the need to
encourage residents to do things for themselves.
*Some participants were aware of the range of
skills, knowledge, expertise and competencies
needed for the rehabilitation of older people,
while others considered that it did not require
any particular skills because rehabilitation was
an intrinsic part of nursing older people.

Nurses who deal with rehabilitation patients
are trained to take care of the everyday need
of the patients. Often after severe brain or
physical injury a person may find it difficult to
take care of oneself, so these nurses are
trained to take care of patients.10
