Project Definition A Project can be defined as temporary endeavours undertaken to create a unique product, Service or result. The temporary nature of project indicates a definite beginning and end. (  PMBOK Guide – Fourth Edition from PMI )
Characteristics of A Project A project has a unique purpose A project is temporary A project require resources A project has a primary sponsor or customer A project involves uncertainty
Examples of Project Development of a software product. Effecting a change in the structure, staffing or style of an organization. Construction of building and infrastructure. Implementing a new business process.
Project vs. Operation Project deals with the management of a specific project, which has a commence date, a number of tasks and a completion date. This is further explained as the management of a specific project.  Operations refers to the ongoing management of daily works of a company, such as technical support, network management, etc. With Operations Management, there is no set end point.
Project Management Institute (PMI) PMI is the world’s leading not-for-profit association for the project management profession. Founded in 1969 by working project managers. 420,000 members and credential holders till date.  250 chapters in over 70 countries. Five globally recognized PMI credentials. PMP Credential Requirements A bachelor's degree and 4,500 hours/ 3 years of PM experience OR a secondary school diploma and 7,500 hours/ 5 years of PM experience.  35 contact hours of classroom instruction that relates to project management objectives. Several types of courses fulfill this requirement.  Pass the PMP exam, which consists of 200 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 4 hours.  Costs:  PMI membership costs $100. Certification fees are $555 for non PMI members and $405 for members. Credential maintenance cycle is 3 years and requirements of 60 PDUs in a planned learning activity.
