Neuroplasticity
Mindful = intentionally
aware of experiences
has they are unfolding
World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland
Mindfulness. and mindful leadership were discussed at the WEF for the first
time.
meditation is now used in:
• technology companies Google, Twitter ,etc..
•car and energy sectors
•state-owned enterprises in China
•UN organizations
•Governments
•World Bank.
New challenges: leaders are facing more situations that require them to
access their self-awareness and emotional intelligence in order to be
successful.
New science: impact of mindfulness on brain plasticity.
scientist Richard Davidson puts it: Even a few hours of meditation can
change the epigenetics of our brain.
Epigenetics
genes can be turned on (expressed) or turned off (silenced)
…FDA-approved pharmaceutical drugs can
cause persistent epigenetic changes.
…pharmaceuticals may be involved
in the etiology of heart disease,
cancer, nerve and mental
disorders, obesity, diabetes,
leukemia, bipolar disorder,
schizophrenia, infertility, and
sexual dysfunction.
…"consequences for modern
medicine are profound, since it
would imply that our current
understanding of pharmacology is
an oversimplification." [Metabolism Clinical and Experimental
57: (2008) S16–S23]
What would you do if you Knew you
couldn’t fail!
Open that Business
Go Back to school
Ask that Amazing woman/man out
Set Health Goals (loose weight, regrow joints ..)
Travel
Skydive
Write that book
Your life begins where your comfort zone ends!!
Gratitude, thankfulness,
gratefulness, appreciation
is a feeling or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit
that one has received or will receive
Judaism "I will give thanks to
the Lord with my whole heart" Christianity “In every thing give
thanks: for this is the will of God
in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Islam “And remember! Your Lord
caused to be declared: If ye are
grateful, I will add more unto you.”
Buddha “Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t
learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we
didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got
sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us be thankful.”
Unconscious Mind
Gets the Job Done
88% of the mind
Goal Getter
Handles All functions
Is Programmable
Never Forgets
Conscious Mind
•Sets Goals
•12% of the mind
•Is Here and Now
•No Long term memory
Mind Control
Experiences that we have shapes the way
the brain is structured

in your body
Neurons that “fire together wire together”
 End of the World , Death in Family
 News, Economy, Disease, Pain, Bills, Loss
 Things out of Control
 Event+Responce=Outcome
 You control your Response
 Japanese children allergic to a poison
ivy-like plant
 a leaf of the poisonous plant was
rubbed onto one forearm.
 a nonpoisonous leaf resembling the
toxic plant was rubbed on the other
forearm.
 What the children did not know was
that the leaves were purposefully
mislabeled
 positive perceptions enhance health,
and negative perceptions precipitate

Mental Practice in Chronic Stroke
Results of a Randomized, Placebo-Controlled
Trial
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
Conclusions— The results support the efficacy of
programs incorporating mental practice for
rehabilitating affected arm motor function in patients
with chronic stroke. These changes are clinically
significant.
Am J Clin Hypn. 1993 Jan;35(3):190-7.
Enhancing the visualization of gymnasts.
The gymnasts were able to eliminate timing errors in
the tricks, to increase flexibility, and, possibly, to
concentrate strength.
The Effect of the “Laying On of Hands” on
Transplanted Breast Cancer in Mice
Journal of Scientific Exploration, Vol. 14, No. 3, pp. 353–364, 2000
•five experimental mice with mammary adenocarcinoma
•which had a predicted100% fatality between 14 and 27 days
•William f. Bengston phd treated these mice for 1 hour per day for 1 month
•The tumors developed a “blackened area,” then they ulcerated, imploded,
and closed, and the mice lived their normal life spans.
•Control mice sent to another city died within the predicted time frame.
Without further treatment, these mice were immune
to the mammary adenocarcinoma.
Finally, we may conclude that we are apparently
able to cure mammary adenocarcinoma in
experimental mice on demand.
Our initial hope was that we might get a
significant difference in survival between the
experimental animals and their controls.
Remission was not seriously considered
Environment and brain plasticity:
towards an endogenous pharmacotherapy.
Physiol Rev. 2014 Jan
Brain plasticity refers to the remarkable property of cerebral
neurons to change their structure and function in response to
experience
…how changes at the level of neuronal properties can ultimately
affect and direct key perceptual and behavioral outputs.
…striking ability of environmental enrichment and physical
exercise to empower adult brain plasticity.
Endogenous substances are those that originate from within an organism, tissue, or
cell
Pharmacotherapy is the treatment of disease through the administration of drugs
