What is Activate
Activate is a highly successful adult outreach programme delivered by the University of
Glasgow’s Community Development team to help participants reflect on their community
involvement and link it to the values and practice principles of community work.
Building on the success of the ‘ACTIVATE’ course, the team have developed and piloted a
small number of Activate courses for young people who are active in their own communities.
Young Peoples Activate residential weekend - @ the CONFORTI Institute, Coatbridge 7th-9th February
This short programme will bring together a group of 24 young people aged 14-17 years
from across a number of communities within Glasgow, Argyle & Isles and Inverclyde in
order to explore some of the key issues around young people today, and the impact this
may have on them and the wider community.
Long term Partnership work between Glasgow University and Branchton CC provided the
opportunity for Branchton to facilitate the Inverclyde community’s 5 participants invited to
experience the ‘ACTIVATE’ pilot initiative. The Inverclyde group consisted of active young
people connected to Branchton CC, Gourock Yac Boys Club and Broomhill Boys Club

Relationship’s
between
Young People & Police Scotland
Why???............ we chose the theme
• Because everyone in our group has been pulled by the
police
• We were keen to find out how many young people
have been pulled by the police, and why?
• We planned to meet up each Monday from the 17th
February and revisit what we learned from our
experience and begin planning how to complete our
task.
• We agreed that the police hold power which is maybe
why we feel that this power is being used as a type of
discrimination when dealing with young people.
What???..............................we aimed to do
• Hear other people opinions on the subject.
• To have young people, police and local
authorities discuss the topic.
• Talk together about causes and share ideas on
possible solutions to the issue.
• We decide to do and will it move forward?
• How can we do this?
HOW???.......we will do this
• Invite local councillors, policemen/women,
young people, youth workers and Branchton
committee to an event Monday 3rd March.
• Carry out an icebreaker so as everyone feels
comfortable.
• Deliver an activity.
• Create a discussion.
• What next?
How we felt while discussing our
experiences with our group…
• Annoyed, confused, angry, picked on, easy
target’s, labelled,
Our process
• At our first meeting with our youth worker we discussed what
we had learned and why we chose the topic. Then we invited
the other young people from the club to listen to our stories
and asked them to get involved
• We then shared ideas on the best way to get the information
we need and who to get it from. We then done a
brainstorming activity on what we will do then we agreed on
how to report our findings
WHAT?
after our discussion on 09/02/14 we realised our own experiences
with the local police have not been very good and we agreed that it
makes us feel that the relationship between us, aren't to good.
WHY?
We feel that they just pick on us because they judge us on what they
hear about young people in general.
HOW?
We decided to hear what other young peoples experiences are, and
hope to talk to local police, councillors, teachers etc, about what we
find out… and then listen to their response
Our Overview
What next
• Visit to police station
• Visits two the local prison
• Go out on the beat with the local police
• Have more group discussions like that in our
schools because every one was interested.
Suggestions to improve relationships
• What could we do to improve relationship with police
and break down the barriers with young people and
the police
Answers >
