This means key analysis and opinion sits near the end of the

material before getting to the most important.
During the past eighteen months, the Systems Products laboratory developed a way to
allow companies with large fleets of trucks to communicate directly with their drivers.
This communication is intended to take place at any time through a satellite link.
The tests occurred during the week beginning 16 February 2015, using the Atticus 1
satellite and eight trucks driven over a twenty state region. All trucks carried our
prototype cell phones.
More than 94% of the 40 000 data transmissions succeeded. Also, over 94% of the voice
transmissions were judged to be commercial quality with exceptional clarity. The most
important factor that limited the success of the transmissions, was movement outside
the satellite's broadcast footprint.
Other factors included the obstruction of the line of sight between the truck antennae
and the satellite by highway overpasses, mountains and hills, trees, and buildings.
Overall, the test clearly proved the soundness of the prototype design. Our work on it
should continue as rapidly as possible. We recommend:
 developing a new antenna designed specifically for use in communications
between satellites and phones
 exploring the configuration of satellites needed to provide thorough footprint
coverage for the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, and Southern Canada.
