About GIS
GIS – Geographic Information System
A set of computer tools and procedures
used to collect, manage, analyze, and
display information associated with a
specific location; a computerized
mapping and database management
application.
GIS is being used in:
• Transportation
• Urban planning
• Archeology and Conservation
• Public safety/National security
• Natural resources
• Agriculture
and much more

Pin maps
“Old style” pin maps

Modern mapping
Today, "virtual" pin maps can be made on the computer,
using pins or other icons as symbols.

Why is open source GIS ?
• GeoServer or MapServer run on all major operating
systems (Windows, Linux, Mac OSX), ArcGIS for
Server only works under (Windows and Linux).
• “Saving” of software licenses.
• Satisfactory performance: for most needs the lean
MapServer or GeoServer perform better than full
equipped ArcGIS Server.
• “What is clear is that there is currently a trend in the
industry to replace large facilities for ArcGIS Server
to Open Source solutions and not vice versa.”

Who uses OpenSource GIS
• Ordnance Survey (Great Britain's National Mapping
Agency) they use GeoServer for their web Map
Service, OS OnDemand.
• They use PostgreSQL and PostGIS to store their
vector data.

• A famous name in education would be Harvard
University using QGIS

• And more

Application for
Inventory
and manage immovable
cultural heritage

The Arches project is an open source, web- and geospatially
based information system that is purpose-built to inventory
and manage immovable cultural heritage.
Arches incorporates widely adopted standards (for heritage
inventories, heritage data, thesauri, and information
technology) so that it will offer a solid foundation that
heritage institutions may customize to meet their particular
needs.
Arches is built using open source software tools to make its
adoption cost effective,
and to allow heritage institutions to pool resources to enhance
Arches in mutually
beneficial ways.
