DISCOVERY and INNOVATION in GEOSCIENCE
Discovery and Innovation are both the elixir of scientists.
We thrive on discovery and we progress because of innovation.
+
Did I find out this myself?
!  Of course not, I am not that smart.
!  I followed the advise of Jack Oliver, I made a DIG into the matter of Discovery and Innovation in Geoscience
!  I found whatever I could find available for “free” and compiled this presentation (internet is not for free, so this
was my price to find this information).
!  I did not find what I expected, and therefore the presentation became something totally different than I planned
and started out with.
!  I was hoping to talk about some ideas of what will become most critical for geoscientists to know in the future of
oil and gas industry, skills and so on.
!  I ended up with talking about what will be the next Discovery and Innovation in Geoscience, beyond Plate
tectonics.
!  I never regretted this exercise, and I now understand what Jack Oliver try to tell in a provocative way, and I have
added a little bit of my opinions into it.
!  ITWAS FUN
!  I feel smarter now.

+Global Communication and exchange of
Geoscience Ideas and Hypothesizes
!  The Global Geoscientific society must communicate for free and
in a more direct format, any ideas, hypothesis, analysis's, results
etc. enabling a global synthesis of these
!  This will lead to the next Innovation, which again will
!  Lead to the next Discovery within Geoscience, which then will
start
!  A new Paradigm for Geoscience
TIME IS OUT FOR THE NICHE JOURNALS, FORUMS,
ASSOCIATIONS etc WHO ONLY GIVES ACCESS TO THE
ABOVE MENTIONED TO PRIVILEGED CLOSED GROUPS OF
GEOSCIENTIST AT A PRICE

Developing basic a new framework
for science - ” a new paradigm"
!  We can examine past examples of creativity in science for patterns of
successful activity and note the reasoning, the style, and the strategy of
previous accomplishers.
!  Learn from our successes and failures so as to compound the rate at which
we bring new discoveries to science.
!  “most scientists are engaged throughout their careers in what is called
"mopping- up operations" or "normal science" or "puzzle-solving
science." “,Thomas Kuhn,“The Structure of Scientific Revolutions “
!  Need to recognize patterns of developing new paradigm, there is no
reason why we should not consciously modify them in order to arrive
more quickly at new paradigms
!  learn how to modify our collective behavior by examining past behavior
that produced major advance
Revised from Jack Oliver,2015

The greatest geological discovery
of our time, plate tectonics
!  What were the key elements in this unparalleled advance, or "new paradigm"
!  It was a brilliant idea by Wegener, Hess,Vine,Wilson et.al. !
!  Did not hit the scientific audience prior to appropriate observations where at hand
!  Observations obtained through the broad reconnaissance surveys of the world's oceans
that revealed the symmetric magnetic anomalies, the globe-encircling mid-ocean rift, the
subduction zones, and the transform faults, in other words, the basic building blocks of
plate tectonics.
!  Learning lesson from this is: expand the observational base significantly
!  We can make great ideas happen,by collecting and communicating new facts on
important phenomena of the Earth
!  Whether the idea catches on immediately, however, depends on the openness of the
science at the time.
!  Scientists needs to break out of the routine of annual budget cycles, repetitive work
schedules, proposal writing. From this perspective, careers should be more varied,
personnel exchange more common, and international programs of global scope far
more intense
Revised from Jack Oliver,2015
+"normal science”, science conducted within
the rules of the existing paradigm
!  An effort to be made that would encourage the development
of new paradigms, that is, major discovery
!  We capable at present at many things within developments in
technique, communication, transportation, data handling, and
so on, we have made a sparkling spectrum of activities
possible to initiate this effort to leave the normal science
base.
!  Economists and rationalists will cry out of course and tell, this
will be to costly and take too much time, so be it.

Era of Science
!  We live in what future historians will probably refer to as the "era of science."
!  We will most likely say if asked how it was to live in this era:We would answer as someone has done before us,
living in a an era of rock’n roll:“If I'd known it was going to be an era, I would have paid more attention to it.”
!  Perhaps we should pay more attention to this era of Science, try to see it in the light of history and to enhance it,
and at least not let it die away because of inadequate leadership and vision on our part.
!  In return for the trust that is placed in us as scientists, we must make certain that our science is always carried
out in the most effective and efficient manner possible.
!  We need a comprehensive global plan for exploration of the solid Earth.A dynamic plan that presents a global
perspective and a global framework within which we can evaluate and stimulate individual efforts.
!  We would, in other words, be using the opportunities of our era to better advantage.
!  we might profit from more interdisciplinary communication, more creative speculation, and more at- tempts at
broad-ranging syntheses.
!  Within the present era of increasing specialization, it is difficult to maintain a drive for synthesis throughout the
entire scientific community.
!  Factors such as finer and finer subdivision of paid (not public available) faculties, libraries, journal specialties,
and funding agencies; collections of papers that substitute for single-author books; narrow-minded reviewers;
and overly tidy administrators inhibit both cross-disciplinary studies and syntheses.

The next greatest innovation in
science -Written communication?
!  There has to be a major change in the way most scientific papers are written,
so as to follow the inverted- pyramid style of newspaper journalism
!  the most important point is made in the first paragraph, the next most important
point in the second paragraph, and so on to the end of the article.
!  scientific communication would be facilitated, and the science would be
healthier
!  A marvelous quality control would be self-imposed on science if each author
knew that the first paragraph, that is, the most important result, could be
simply compared with first paragraphs of other authors.
!  Could represent difficulty of overcoming the inertia of the present system
and causing the scientific community to change its writing style en masse
!  Some scientific papers cannot be reasonably forced into this formula
!  Matters important and crucial to the future of earth science are involved, and
they deserve thorough and wide- spread consideration. We need to see and
evaluate our science as one entity and to view it in the context of the whole
of society.
