With this presentation Team A will provide e merging security trends that may affect the Johnson County Sheriff's Department, p ossible steps to protect the organization, its customers, and its employees, and , t he role of risk and cost-benefit analyses in making security decision s
The current security trends that the Johnson County Sheriff's Department has used were meant to improve previous situations, but unfortunately those same trends have lead to short term solutions and current problems at the facility. By building a larger facility to house inmates from other counties to bring in more revenue, the department did not hire more staff to compensate. This brought on longer hours for the employees, lower moral for those same employees, and a high turn over rate of employees. The overcrowding of inmates led to understaffing of employees. This was no good for anyone.
Though the department saved on average $900 a day by not having to outsource its inmates and even increased its revenue by using the new facility to allow other jails to outsource its facilities to house their inmates, the risk did not often pay off. Because the county has elected officials the department can only employ so many workers and during election time spending more money is not what the county wants. A more well thought out plan should have been planned before acquiring the facility.
The Sheriff is an elected official of the department and needs to make sure his communication with his staff is open ended. He also needs to make sure his plans are well thought out. Even going over any ideas with the fellow deputies would have been helpful and some of the problems that were issues before might not still be issues we are having today at the department. Equipment failure, OTJT instead of classroom education or formal training, and lack of communication. The current system must evolve in order to stay functional and stay profitable Proper training must be done, as well as proper staffing in order to protect the employees as well as the inmates from each other. Keeping a good relationship with the community and surrounding communities will attract more jails to use this facility so that it can stay profitable .
The Johnson County Sheriff's Department in Missouri, does have its flaws, but none that cannot be fixed. With proper assessments and a stronger management system and more fluid communication between the staff and management, the department can continue to grow in the right direction.
