Digital Techniques ~ Visual Communication for Theatre Design Photoshop 3D Studio Max AutoCAD Emily Seekings
Photoshop We used Photoshop to digitally design a mood-board, costume drawing and set design for a play of our choice.
We started off however playing around with importing textures for a basic character. The face was also an imported image. The levels of opacity were altered to create the idea of the left leg being behind the right.
Mood Board for the ‘Importance of Being Ernest’ by Oscar Wilde
My set design for the parlour in the ‘Importance of Being Ernest’ by Oscar Wilde was created by importing an image and adding layers of patterns
My costume drawings are not specifically for ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’, but are from the same era. These are typical outfits worn by children in 1895.
3D Studio Max Using 3D Studio Max we developed a set design idea while creating a 3D model. We used lots of different tools to create a curved table top, a bowl and carved table legs.
First I tried out the basic tools
I created a carved table leg from a photograph, which was resized and cloned
Stage and table with legs, mid-way through the design process
Final design

AutoCAD Using AutoCAD, we had to complete a series of exercises, demonstrating different elements of a final design – a floppy disk
Exercise 1 Using the LINE command in conjunction with the FILLET and CHAMFER commands. Setting the dimension toolbar, for size of text/Arrowheads and precision of decimal places.
Exercise 2 Using the OFFSET, ROTATE and TRIM commands, along with ‘aligning dimensions’. The rectangle was drawn, then rotated by 44 degrees. It was then offset by 10mm, and the excess was trimmed off
Floppy Disk We used all the previous commands to create a final floppy disks, complete with colour coded dimensions and text.
I found the sessions useful for learning the basics of the three programs. However, I feel I would need a lot more practice and tutoring, particularly with AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max, to make sure I am competent enough to use them in the work place.
