Private
Scenario: public cloud (selective services)
• Use of various public cloud offers for test and development
environments
• Use of cloud services in order to compensate peak loads while 80-90
percent of IT remains in current mode without cloud technology
Scenario: private cloud (only)
• Private cloud is seen as an innovation of its own IT
• Adjustment of the entire infrastructure to private cloud
• Changes to ITIL processes and operational processes are consistently
implemented
Scenario: hybrid cloud
• Most viable model in the market
• Combines the scaling effects of the public cloud scenario with data
security and data control of a private cloud
• Cloud brokering has to be configured to fulfill individual governance &
security requirements

Quality
• Which IT requirements are requested by the business areas and are
to be assessed as reasonable?
• How are they implemented?
• Do these systems correspond to business units demand?
Security
• Does standard market practice comply with current regulation?
• Is the security of the systems adequately given (products lifecycle,
patch management, backup, disaster recovery)?
• Do the human resources and organizational processes correspond to
safety requirements?
Costs
• Are resources and funds being used optimum compliant?
• Are already existing synergies optimally utilized?
• Is the IT organization set up in order to ensure qualitatively superior
services?
• Should services, as well as applications, be offered de/centrally?
Technical aspects
• How many legacy applications is the enterprise dependent on?
• How to reduce operational risks during migration?
• What best practices have been identified and can be applied to
cloud projects?
Automation and virtualization
• What degree of IT standarization does the enterprise have?
• Are tools implemented to deploy a new virtual server or storage
extension automatically?
• Is the IT already virtualized and which software is in use for the
administration of the virtual environment?
Processes
• How does the business request new systems and applications?
• How effective are these processes in regard to automation?
• Which service management processes are implemented and could
be operated through/by a private cloud environment?

BearingPoint supported one of the largest European retailers in the evaluation of cloud scenarios for a business critical application
(Point of Sale – PoS). The project is focused on technological feasibility, economic analysis as well as business benefits and risks.
Business needs
Business driver:
• Need for increased flexibility and cost efficiency
• New alignment with partner agencies planned as
part of a strategic optimization program
Challenges:
• Very complex system landscape
• High security standards and legal requirements
Operational aim:
• Transformation of the PoS system from a
decentralized rich-client-architecture to a
centralized architecture
• Check the cloud as an option
Our approach
Identify and analyze transformation scenarios:
• Optimize AsIs
• IaaS
• PaaS
• Assessment of technical feasibility, business case
and security requirements
• Specification of target scenario in 2nd more
detailed phase
• Examine the optimization of all connected
applications and systems, such as SAP and
individual applications
• Design and evaluate migration and sourcing
scenarios
Client’s results
The first step was to develop a sound basis for a
go/no-go-decisions after 3 weeks including:
• Scenario evaluation
• Business case
• Transformation impact
• Business benefits & risks
Deeper evaluation within phase for target scenario
(here PaaS) as a sound decision basis including:
• Technical blueprint/PoC
• TCO analysis
• Benefits & risks
• Migration plan
• Sourcing scenarios

Business needs
• Cost reduction in the IT infrastructure by using new
technology (e.g. virtualization)
• Variable use of IT resources based on actual
business needs
Challenges:
• A lot of applications were developed
• Timelines for transition of applications is very short
because of 24 hour productivity
Our approach
• Analysis of applications, architecture and software
life cycle
• Business case calculation for each application
• Building up migration factory
• Concept and controlling of migration/transition
using a standard migration plan
• Function, performance and integrations tests with
the acceptance of vendor and business
• Transition of software and data to new productivity
equipment before shutting down old equipment
after a short parallel operation
Client’s results
• Reduction of ongoing operating costs, up to 40%
per application
• Only needed IT infrastructure resources are ordered
– pay per use
• Reduced release to production time for servers from
14 days to 1 day
• Harmonization of technical platform standards (HP
Hardware with VMware) and standard guidelines
for software development
• Foster alignment between IT and business due to
increased flexibility and speed
