Editor's Notes

  1. Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 is the most open, most scalable, most compatible, agile and enterprise-focused cloud platform on the market today – with the lowest total cost of ownership.
  2. Let‘s start with the key market drivers for K5. It is no coincidence that the growth of cloud has happened during the financial services crisis as the majority of drivers initially associated with cloud were around operational efficiency and the reduction of cost. The major deployments have been around replacing traditional infrastructure and providing those with new scalable, agile infrastructure deliverables on a cost per use basis. Our cloud implementations were deployed in traditional, corporate IT environments, in situations where infrastructure absolutely must not fail. In more recent times alongside the growth of digitalization across our customer base customers was the remaining course in cost reduction and now moved their focus to gaining competitive advantage with their customers are focused with the deployment of entire business platforms as opposed to just infrastructure. And of course their focus is moved to support their customers as well as the internal use of cloud-based platforms. Typically each of our customers are trying to pull these things together created different paces and that brings a great deal of complexity to their environments as they deploy a range of traditional IT solutions alongside multiple implementations of cloud for both internal and external use. And this is where Hybrid IT brings all of this together in providing simplified solutions that allow the management of both the operational efficiency and digitalization to take place all at once so the management of Hybrid IT solutions that manage the complex environment within our customer base.
  3. Digitalization is the buzzword of the moment as due to digitalization there are significant challenges that our customers are facing. Clearly cost savings remain a constant issue throughout, but customers are really focused now on growth and the development of new sources of revenue and new value chains around collaborations with suppliers, partners, and of course their customers. They want to do this in a future-proof way so that the deployments that they make can be integrated with other customers. The development in the area of the Internet of Things is a classic example where collaboration and integration are absolute requirements. Clearly no customer wants to fully depend from an individual provider and so the agility around these solutions, the ability to unlock value, drive efficiency and also integrate with other services over time is a really important part of their agenda. Clearly from Fujitsu’s perspective we believe the technology is deployed not for technology’s sake and so the human centric innovation aspect, particularly focused on increasing and improving the customer experience is also a really key challenge in the digitalization space where Fujitsu is uniquely placed to respond.
  4. So in response to these market drivers and challenges of digitalization, Fujitsu has responded with the new Fujitsu Cloud Service K5. To summarize the characteristics of this offering: It offers a solution for customers who wish to drive operational efficiency, digitalization and of course Hybrid IT across public, virtual private and private cloud as well as robust or traditional IT. It is the most open, most compatible and agile cloud platform in the market today, has uniquely 100% infrastructure and application compatibility across all of options enabling integration and migration across those various options of cloud and even prior to its deployment in EMEIA is already the world’s largest public OpenStack-based cloud platform. It’s been designed specifically for the enterprise, is integrated with the market leading native cloud application development tools in the form of CloudFoundry, the market leading API management toolset in the form of APIGee and has a highly automated workload and blueprinting management process that uniquely can also be deployed to the hybrid cloud environment. To enhance compatibility, in addition to KVM for OpenStack based deployment, K5 also supports VMware and Bare Metal implementations that can be deployed and mixed and matched on a global basis to guarantee a consistent user experience.
  5. Let‘s take a look at how Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 can help with the digital transformation. Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 can help distinctly with this task in four major areas: It can modernize systems enabling their convergence and the deployment of a single cloud solution across both systems of engagement, so systems that allow customer interaction, and systems of record. It allows extensions, so building API services to create new capabilities, new sources of growth and new sources of revenue. It enables interoperation, so the creation of cloud and digital services that can be deployed across multiple platforms and finally and perhaps most important in the digital space it encourages and strongly enhances innovation, so the creation of new applications and systems built together to provide new sources of unique value to customers.
  6. We are now looking at how our open technology and Fujitsu know how can be combined to a unique position. In the cloud marketplace as it is matured, different cloud platforms have formed different silos of capabilities that typically either fall into systems of engagement, the platforms that are focused on engaging with customers such as customer facing digital websites and mobile applications or systems of record, which are the internal IT systems that absolutely must not fail. As for example billing engines that allow those services to be onward billed to customers. Services like Amazon Web Services and Azure that are typically used for systems of engagement involving interaction with customers or test and development websites. If you look at alternative implementations like IBM bluemix or HP Helion they have typically fallen into systems of records, so those systems that absolutely must not go wrong. This approach has required customers to deploy multiple and different technologies, replicating support and consumption costs across the whole organization. K5 uniquely and for the first time offers a system that can be deployed for both systems of engagement and systems of record across the organization, encouraging the interaction and integration of these services to provide more joined up services and more integrated services to provide greater value to Fujitsu’s customers. Fujitsu K5 includes both IaaS and PaaS services for both systems of engagement and systems of record, build on one cloud-based set of technologies to be deployed in the enterprise to achieve all mission-critical goals. So Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 provides a hybrid cloud architecture that is correct for each workload, regardless if you want to go for test and development, prove of concept or full production systems deployed on a global basis. It includes all the security and governance required, a single contract for the global deployment of cloud services, agile application development and modernization, that can be deployed on a completely consistent basis globally. As a single system it integrates customer knowledge more comprehensively across systems of engagement and systems or record than possibly any alternative set of technologies.
  7. Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 is unique in the market place in its ability to provide this range of services and this unique set of business values. Firstly Fujitsu’s Cloud Service K5 is the most open service in the market place today. This is due to the fact that K5 is based on OpenStack technology and has adopted the two market leading sets of technology from native application development and secure managed API services deployed through the cloud. This provides unparalleled compatibility as the open source community means that Fujitsu is able to take advantage of the release of OpenStack but also provides the important unique capability specifically focused around scalability. The majority of enhancements to the standard OpenStack releases by Fujitsu have been based on enterprise features around security, scalability and the deployment of systems. It also provides one of the most compatible cloud platforms in the marketplace today, based on its ability to enhance OpenStack with both VMware and bare metal implementations. We’re able to support Oracle, SAP and SAP HANA based around these deployments. So using K5 you can literally mix and match OpenStack, VMware and bare metal-based implementations in the public, virtual private and private clouds and mix and match this capability to your requirements in each individual geography and also share that information on a global basis. As Fujitsu K5 offer 100% infrastructure and applications compatibility that makes it a more agile platform than any other capability in the market place today. So for example let’s compare a K5 deployment against what will be achieved, against some of our major competition. So for example, both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure once the offer public and virtual private deployments are not able to offer a private cloud deployment into the market place. HP’s deployments have a different set of technologies for the public cloud versus the private cloud. And HP have now exited the public cloud market place and instead use a platform based around Microsoft Azure. Using a test and development system on K5 and deploying a proof of concept on K5 customers are able to move workloads immediately from the public cloud to the private cloud production environment without undertaking any retesting whatsoever. So literally if your proof of concept is successful you move your workloads. Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 provides 100% infrastructure and applications’ compatibility as you move from the public cloud to the private cloud. And that means, customers using K5 are able to deploy at significantly lower cost and the deployment of services on K5 is significantly faster and more agile than that on competitors in this space today. Added to that, K5 is completely enterprise-focused. Fujitsu has designed, built, configured, connected it with its own networks and fully manages K5 end-to-end. No other vendor can claim complete end-to-end build, manage and run capability as part of their platform. As a consequence, we’re able to offer truly enterprise focused SLAs at 99,99 % availability across the public, virtual private and private cloud. The SLAs are available immediately from the point of unavailability of the platform – as opposed to some of our competition that may measure from 15 and 30 minutes from the moment of unavailability of the platform. It’s our view that particularly in the systems of records space a lot of damage can be done in 15 to 30 minutes and as a consequence we manage our cloud platform right from the onset. There is also a major difference in the way we manage our commercials. In the unlikely event when we do actually owe service credits, we offer those service credits proactively to our customers as opposed to some of our competition who require the customer to prove the unavailability of the platform. Last and of course possibly most importantly as a consequence of its unique agility and its use of OpenStack as the primary technology and as a part of the platform, Fujitsu K5 Cloud Service results in the lowest Total Cost of Ownership of any cloud platform in the market place today.
  8. Let’s look at the various flavors of cloud offered by Fujitsu Cloud Service K5. K5 is offered in four different flavors as illustrated on this slide. The public cloud, which is a completely shared environment, virtual private where the complete capability and also the network maybe dedicated to the customer. It is also available in two flavors of private dedicated cloud. Number one in Fujitsu’s data center and secondly in the customers’ data center. All of these options are 100% compatible from both an infrastructure and applications perspective. All of these flavors are available on OpenStack, VMware and bare metal implementations. So regardless of the origin of your application development, whether it was developed specifically for VMware, for OpenStack or implemented on bare metal you have a 100% compatibility for migration and integration capability across all four flavors from K5. These deployments are for customers who require a pay-as-you-go OPEX-based service. Clearly we recognize that some of our customers want to build their own private cloud but really like the technology story around the technologies that will be the basis for their own K5. And in order to service that kind of customers, the PRIMEFLEX family of products – available here on the right hand side of this slide – are available for this type of customers. So regardless of the commercial model you want, be it a OPEX-based model or a CAPEX-based model, there is something in the overall K5 range of services and the PRIMEFLEX family of products to offer to every client.
  9. As I have mentioned earlier on about the OpenStack community, there can really be no stronger proof of our adoption for OpenStack and also K5 than the fact that we will be implementing K5 within our own internal IT environment, saving ourselves next to 300 mio US $ for implementing K5 across 13.000 existing servers and 640 business systems. Not only will we get the cost benefits and the agility benefits as a consequence of doing this, but all of the scambles and all of the knowledge that we will acquire from implementing those 640 business systems which we then can make available to customers. So not only is Fujitsu uniquely making OpenStack available to the enterprise but as a consequence of our own internal projects we’ll acquire an unparalleled level of knowledge and skills that we as a consequence of our internal project can subsequently make available to our customers. Now this is meant that our contributions to the OpenStack Community have increased exponentially across the development of the K5 project. And as you can see on the illustration on the right hand side of the cloud, in the last 2 years our contributions to OpenStack have taken us from 93 just two years ago to 10th now and we’re fully focused on becoming the 3rd largest contributor of the global OpenStack community in the next 18 month.
  10. Infrastructure as a Service is only a small part of the capability of K5, the real value lies in the Platform as a Service capabilities provided as part of the platform – so let’s talk about that area. The first thing customers want to do when looking at a new cloud platform is to understand how they can migrate existing legacy applications into the cloud. As a consequence of an acquisition that we made last November and announced at Fujitsu Forum, an organization called UShareSoft, we now have the unique set of capabilities that allow us to discover complex workloads in the traditional IT environment and migrate that capability into the cloud. Having done that, the next fact customers are interested in is, how do we develop native cloud services that take full advantage of the scalability, resilience that the cloud has to offer. In order to respond to that, Fujitsu has globally licensed the market leading native cloud application development capability CloudFoundry that is pre-licensed and pre-integrated into the K5 platform. But you only pay for that service in the event that you use it. So customers are save in the knowledge that they can buy the K5 service but the use and costs associated with CloudFoundry are purely on a pay-per-use-basis. Now, clearly there will be a number of legacy services where there is no business case to migrating those into the cloud. This results in the problem that the intellectual property locked in these services as a consequence is not available to the rest of the business. Using the APIGee capability that has now been built into K5 allows you to link, using secure APIs, from K5 directly into your legacy platform, expose those services and make them available via cloud and digital services. APIGee has been globally licensed as part of the K5 platform. In line with the theme we’ve just established about CloudFoundry it’s only actually paid for upon it’s usage. So again you pay-per-use application built into K5, absolutely save in the knowledge that at any point you can unlock the value contained in legacy systems or cloud platforms but purely on a pay-per-use-basis.
  11. blueprinting and workload management process as part of the deployment of cloud services. The System Factory capability built into the K5 PaaS layer allows customers to do exactly that. It allows them to blueprint services right from a workload level as part of an overall blueprint that can be globally deployable across the organization. If you think of common uses of this: In many instances customers will have a customer facing website and they may undertake a particular promotion. When additional customers hit that website it is not uncommon for the user experience to degrade as a consequence of the significantly enhanced usage. Using K5, the whole system associated with this website can be completely blueprinted and rules and policies can be set around that and the rules and policies can be used to autoscale in line with the usage of the actual platform. So if you think back of the example I just illustrated - customer facing websites, new promotion, significant usage of the platform - K5 would be able to autoscale the entire platform for as long as its usage is required; and autoscale it back down to its original form. The usage will be paid for on a pay-per-use basis. That requires no manually intervention associated with the platform, but the entire system and business platform to be blueprinted, autoscaled up and autoscaled back down in line with the requirements of the platform. And that means, the entire process is automated, no manual intervention required, complete pay-per-use, but the user experience is enhanced and retained though the entire experience. There are numerous instances both through the use of internal corporate IT and external systems of record, where the automated open and agile blueprinting process adds significant value to the business. And of course in the case of K5, the fact that those blueprinted images can be then deployed from one part of the world to another, so work undertaken for example in EMEA can be shared with colleagues in North America or Asia, enhances the value associated with that kind of capability.
  12. Now of course we recognize that we operate within a hybrid world. And none of our customers will be using K5 as the only cloud platform in their environment. So once again, as part of our acquisition of UShareSoft, we acquired a unique set of capabilities that allows those blueprints that we’ve just established to actually be shared with multiple other cloud platforms. So literally the blueprints we’ve produced allow workloads to be migrated between K5, Azure, Amazon Web Services, IBM Bluemix or HP Helion, just to name four examples of what we take that automation but apply that to hybrid IT, hybrid cloud environments. This is a unique capability offered by the UForge set of capabilities that we acquired when we acquired the UShareSoft business last November.
  13. Having migrated those workloads into the various cloud environments, customers need to be able to manage the situation and they need to provide a single mechanism - what we refer to as a single pane of glass - to ensure security, visibility and cost management across their environment, including control and governance, So that services can only be acquired with the approval of the management to rapidly setup and close down additional instances and cloud services to ensure that shadow IT remains under control, to use the cloud service that best suits their needs including cost management So using the Fujitsu Cloud Service Management solution you can interrogate your various cloud services to work out, for example, which one offers the lowest cost of ownership associated with the workload you have in mind. That means you got a single view of the cloud services you run across the business including IaaS, PaaS and a wide range of Software as a Service services. In fact the Fujitsu Cloud Service Management solution accommodates over 2,5 thousand different cloud platforms out of the box, enables customers to manage their usage and consumption of services across their multi-cloud environment and addressing the needs around security, visibility and cost management across hybrid IT.
  14. As I mentioned earlier on Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 is going to be deployed on a global basis throughout 2016 up to mid 2017. It’s already been deployed in Japan, will be available in the UK as from July 2016, available to all customers across EMEIA that require location-independent services. The private cloud implementations of K5 are orderable from August 2016 anywhere across EMEIA, the public and virtual private services will be available in Finland as from October and in Germany end of November and then furthermore in Spain as of January 2017. We’ll then be doing further implementations within Singapore and Australasia, completing the overall global deployment of K5.
  15. Firstline support services will be provided globally out of the Philippines from Manila. Second line and third line services will be out of UK and Japan. Managed services around K5 and the rest of our portfolio of hybrid IT services will be offered out of Kazan/Russia and out of India. This completes the global deployment and a globally consistent mechanism of supporting K5. In addition to that of course, customer intimate services will always be required and service management and cloud management services associated with particular attempts will be offered next to customer directly out of the countries where sales took place. This provides overall a globally deployed service with a globally deployed service management solution, with customer-intimate services, continuing to be distributed directly out of the country to remain uniquely in touch with the requirements of each and every one of our customers using the K5 select services associated with the set of managed Hybrid IT services that go along with them.
  16. So to summarize: Fujitsu Cloud Service K5 offers a solution for customers wishing to drive operational efficiency, digitalization and hybrid IT across the public, virtual private and private cloud environment. It is the most open, compatible and agile cloud platform in the market today and is already the world largest public OpenStack cloud platform.
