Background Information

 • Located approximately 22 miles
     northeast of Sacramento

 • Population of approximately
     106,000 and growing

 • Ranked 2nd out of 16 cities
     (Sacramento Business Journal)

 • 1,500 miles of Environmental Utility
     Pipeline infrastructure
                                            COREUD Administration Building

 • Staff of four full-time employees,
     two part-time
Initial Process

 • AutoCAD MAP used to capture and
      create environmental utility data

 • ArcInfo used for analysis and
      maintenance of the GIS data

 • HANSEN used to manage utility
      asset attribute data

 • AML routines written in ArcInfo to
link new GIS data to HANSEN
Initial Process
                  HANSEN

                            AML

                                  DXF

                  ArcInfo AutoCAD MAP
The Challenge

• CAD and GIS software tools not
    integrated well with each other

• Import and exporting data led to
    redundancy and overlapping work

• CAD/GIS workflow process was not
    very repeatable by staff

• Streamlining process would require
    additional software and training
How Ideate Helped

• Replicated all asset information
    tables from HANSEN into CAD

• Created object data tables within
    AutoCAD MAP to capture attributes

• Automatically populated pipe and
    manhole attributes (ID, TO, FROM,
Layer, etc.) to object data tables

• Already linked to HANSEN from the
ID’s created on the CAD side

• Exported to SHP files, and
    uploaded into ArcSDE
How Ideate Helped
                    HANSEN

                                    Object Data

           SHP SHP

                    ArcInfo AutoCAD MAP
ArcSDE
The Results

 • EUD staff trained to clean data,
     less time spent by management

 • Accuracy of data was improved by
     performing QAQC within one
     location using error checking

 • Less time spent on the GIS side
     maintaining the CAD utility data

 • No peripheral 3rd party software or
     training investments needed
Moving Forward…

• Upgraded to ArcSDE 9.2 as their
    central GIS database

• Connecting directly to ArcSDE from
AutoCAD MAP 3D to access, edit,
    and maintain utility information

• Utility and infrastructure data
    accessed online with ArcIMS

• Distributing the data to field
    personnel using the DWF Viewer
Moving Forward…
                     HANSEN
ArcIMS DWF Viewer

          Clerical Field Crew

                                             Object Data

          SHP SHP

                     ArcInfo AutoCAD MAP
