INTRODUCTION Chromecast is a thumb-sized circular media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port on your TV powered by a USB connector. Simply use any computing or mobile device to cast your apps right to the big screen. As simple as that. Chromecast is Google’s low‐cost answer to TV streaming. Over 25 Million Chromecast have been sold to FEB 2016. With Chromecast, you can easily enjoy your favourite online entertainment on your HDTV— movies, TV shows, music, and more from Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies, Music etc. The interesting thing about the Chromecast is the Chrome in its name. 5 Mirroring and Casting •Casting sends the video from your PC, phone or tablet to your HDTV and once the Cast has started you can then begin doing other tasks on your PC, phone or tablet. •All mirroring does is send whatever’s on your PC, phone or tablet’s display straight to the HDTV, hence the name: mirroring.
DESIGN of ChromecastChromecast 1 vs. New Chromecast • The most visible differences between the two Chromecast are, of course, their designs. The first one was a black coloured stick dongle. You can also choose a range of colours too. •Fast Play Fast Play a prediction algorithm that determines what you might watch next based on your previous choices and starts to pre‐buffer the video before you start it, videos start the instant you click on them. •Guest MODE Allows people to share content with you, with whom you don’t want to share your password with.
Requisites for Setup • A display device with an HDMI input, for example, a high-definition television. (HDTV) • Access to an available power outlet or an available (non-service) USB port on your HDMI-enabled display. • Access to a secure wireless network. (2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n ) • A compatible Android or IOS Smartphone or tablet, or Mac, Windows or Chromebook computer. Install the app on your device, plug Chromecast into your TV, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and pair it with your device. Mobile As the Chromecast is compatible with Tablet, it is highly compatible with the Smartphone. User just needs to download the required applications and then can cast the required services from the mobile. Laptop Chromecast easily works with Chromebook, it also works great with the apple Mac, windows X86,64 machines.

Component Protocols of Chromecast Initial Chromecast testing has revealed that it is a DIAL device and sniffing shows several interesting commands that can be sent to it. The Chromecast dongle is apparently listening on http port 8008. •DIAL (Discovery and launch) Protocol was developed by Netflix and YouTube which is owned by Google. This protocol is being integrated into devices and apps by various manufactures and content provider. • DIAL protocol allows the DIAL client to locate the DIAL server device running on the same WIFI network. In the case of Chromecast, your phone, tablet or laptop act as a client and the Chromecast itself is the server. •REST (Representational State Transfer) protocol then receives the HTTP request from the client device(mobile, laptop, tablet, PC) to launch the applications on the server device (Chromecast). 16contacttoprashantj@gmail.com

Some amazing things Chromecast can do • Ethernet Adapter A wired connection for hard-to-reach Wi-Fi spots in your home. This optional accessory lets you connect your Chromecast directly to your router to create a fast and reliable connection for your Chromecast. • Google often gives away free movies and other perks to those who have a Chromecast. • TV As a DJ To play music through your TV with Chromecast, download Google Play Music. • If you use Google Slides/Docs you can show your presentation with Chromecast. Install the Google Cast extension in the Chrome browser. • Game Time Decision It's not a PlayStation 4, but the Chromecast can be used to play some fun family games. Eg. Jeopardy, Sonic Jump Fever etc. About 1000 of games are now available on Play Store. The device itself is being touted as the controller which will offer new ways of interacting with the games. • Kid 'n Play Speaking of YouTube Kids, the app lets junior watch age-appropriate videos from the Google-owned video site. PROS • Very affordable(cost 35$ only). • Supported apps work well. • Chrome tab casting is very useful. • Easy setup. • Works on multiple platforms. • Simple protocol stack. Can do various things on the go. • Chromecast certainly fixes the out‐of‐reach hardware issue by selling for a rock-bottom price. If you can plug an HDMI cable into a television, you can use Chromecast.
