What is semantic search?
Semantics is the science of the meaning that lies
beneath words and an understanding of the
relationships between words.
Same word – Different meanings
Jaguar = car
jaguar = animal
Jaguars = football team
Different words – Same meaning
Disability Legislation = Equal Opportunity Law
Different words – Related meanings
Organization = company
Organization = trade union
Organization = charity
…because language is too ambiguous.
Why is a semantic network important?
What is a semantic network?
It is a complex map of associations and meanings of words:
• Includes all definitions of all words.
• Include relationships among all words.
• This enables both high precision & high recall.
The quality of results is
directly related to the
complexity and richness of
the network.
-- and --
The ability to PROPERLY
ANALYZE words.
4 Requirements Definition Example
Morphological Analysis understand word forms
dog, dog-catcher, and doggy-bag
are closely related
Grammatical Analysis
understand the parts of
speech
"There are 40 rows in the table"
uses rows as a noun, vs. "She rows
5 times a week" uses rows as a verb
Logical Analysis
understand how words
relate to other words
“Davey Jones, represented by
attorney Daniel Stanley, is married
to Rebecca Carter". Rebecca is
married to Davey not Daniel.
Semantic Analysis
(disambiguation)
understand the context
of key words
"I used chicken broth for my soup
stock" uses stock in the context of
food, vs. "The company keeps lots
of stock on hand" uses stock in the
context of inventory.
What does properly analyzed mean?
Why does a Semantic Platform excel?
The answer is in primary measures of
Information Management
#1 – Precision (a measure of exactness)
Retrieving a high level of accurate results
that are relevant to your search.
#2 – Recall (a measure of completeness)
Retrieving a high percentage of relevant documents.
Locating what applies.
Keyword and math based technology can
achieve one but not both.
Semantic Disambiguator
The semantic understanding
of words in context is a
primary key to success.
Semantic technology works at a real conceptual level.
Automated Q&A meets semantics
- LIVE Demonstration -
50,000 questions / week = 26,000,000 questions annually
93% accuracy
No human intervention
Multi-language deployment

The future of semantics
• Semantics is a revolutionary approach to the management of
unstructured information.
• Keyword, statistics and shallow linguistics have reached their
plateau. There are no significant developments possible, while the
deep semantic understanding of content has a wide variety of
applications for growing in many directions.
• This means that semantic has the potential to become a
pervasive technology.
• The sooner you adopt the further ahead you will be. There will
be a learning curve. Don’t let that slow you down.
Semantics and why it matters.
Thank you.
