Editorial
I would like to begin the Editorial of the first issue of Balmer Lawrie Organisational
Gazette [BLOG], our quarterly house journal, in the new financial year 2024-25 by
quoting a thought which our leaders have voiced time and again, “We have seen
times changing . . . We have seized opportunities in change!” This has probably been
one of the key reasons why the Company has been able to traverse the awe-inspiring
milestone of 157 years and has always remained profitable in its entire corporate
journey. Today, the business environment is witnessing unprecedented changes and
to stay relevant we have to look for opportunities that will drive growth. Steve Jobs once
said, “Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity, not a threat.”

Gazette [BLOG], our quarterly house journal to the Foundation Day celebrations.
Balmer Lawrie was founded on 1st February 1867 and for us Balmer Lawriens, this
day is very close to our hearts. On this day we proudly tell the world about our rich
legacy, heritage and history. Balmer Lawrie stepped into its 158th year on 1st February
2024. Every year on this day, the Balmer Lawrie flag is hoisted at every location, a
pledge is administered and C&MD’s message is read out. The celebrations follow on
the Sunday post 1st February.
This event holds immense significance and is the most awaited event for the
employees and their families. Various programs are organised in the four regions
with the objective of bringing the entire Balmer Lawrie family together. I believe
that the Foundation Day celebrations is a unique employee engagement forum. It
is also a platform to showcase our in-house talent. On this day we actually sense the
strength in our diversity, we realise how fortunate we are to be part of an organisation
that has always made profits in its journey since inception, we cherish the feeling of
being together and we remind ourselves of our Leaders’ vision, our responsibility of
upholding the reputation of our organisation, fostering our culture and enhancing
our commitment to the various stakeholders. This issue of BLOG brings you glimpses
of the different programs organised across locations pan India on 4th February 2024.
With the beginning of the new Financial Year, let’s focus on our KPTs and strongly
drive excellence in performance to stay ahead of competition. Hope the new financial
year is a harbinger of success for all of us at Balmer Lawrie. BLOG wishes all of you a

hearty congratulations to the Leadership and all the team members!
We signed an MOU with IIM Lucknow Enterprise Incubation Centre (IIML EIC) in February 2024

applications for the Corporate VC Startup Engagement Programme (CSEP).
I will also take this opportunity to mention about some significant accomplishments in various

We have stepped into the financial year 2024-25 and its time for
us to take stock of our performance. Though we’ve witnessed
both topline and bottomline growth, our topline growth needs
a solid push. Besides our business goals, we need to strategically
drive our new business initiatives and the future leadership
projects with more vigour.
I am happy that we commissioned the Cold Chain Unit at

An ode to our Leaders…
They had dreams, hopes and the vision to create and drive our diverse Company,
Their style, personalities and forte were unique but what was common was their passion, dedication,
fearlessness and qualities so many.
Their actions inspired others to learn, dream and do more,
Their insight and ingenuity brought them achievements galore.
Our Leaders walked the talk and stood tall in changing times,
They seized opportunities in change and drove Balmer Lawrie to be a conglomerate that never ceases to
shine.
Founding Fathers, Stephen George Balmer (L) and
Alexander Lawrie (R)
Alexander Lawrie
Senior Partner, 1867 - 1908
Driven by the spirit of entrepreneurship, two enterprising Scotsmen Stephen George Balmer and
Alexander Lawrie came together to form the partnership firm, Balmer Lawrie & Co. at Kolkata on
1st
February, 1867. History goes…a coin was tossed…Balmer won…his name preceded in the Firm
incorporated and thus was born Balmer Lawrie.
Soon after signing the co-partnership agreement, S G Balmer returned to England where he passed
away on 21st
May 1867 because of ‘Phthisis’, in London. Alexander Lawrie was therefore virtually the
sole founder of Balmer Lawrie & Co. Mr. Alexander Lawrie passed away at Ruthin, Hampstead on 25th
April 1908 at the age of 64 years. During the 41 years when he guided the destiny of the firm, not only
in Calcutta but also in London, where he founded the firm of Alexander Lawrie & Co., Mr. Lawrie took
an active part in other business interests as Director of the National Bank of India Ltd., The Alliance
Assurance Co. and other concerns.

Among the prominent Partners taking part in the development of the Firm to its present position, is pre-
eminently Mr. J N Stuart who, as a Partner from 1878 until the Firm became a Private Limited Company
in 1924, remained second to Mr. Alexander Lawrie in the management of the Firm.
Mr. John Gemmell became a Partner of Alex Lawrie & Co. in 1891, and later Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd.
leaving India in 1907. He was a Director of Alex Lawrie & Co. till his death in 1927. Together with Mr.
A C Lawrie, son of Mr. Alexander Lawrie, Mr. Gemmell belonged to the prominent Partners who joined
the Firm in the first quarter century of its career.
Mr. A C Lawrie, son of the Founder, joined the London Staff in 1887, becoming Partner in 1891 and after
serving in Calcutta as Partner for some years returned to London and remained a Partner of Alex Lawrie
& Co. Ltd. till the day of his death in 1918.
Mr. P Balmer Lawrie, another son of the Founder, joined Balmer Lawrie & Co. Staff in 1891, and after
spending two years on the Tea Estates connected with the Firm returned to London and became a
Partner of Alex Lawrie & Co. in 1900, and of Balmer Lawrie & Co. in 1901. After being a Senior Partner
for several years in Calcutta, Mr. Lawrie returned to London in 1914. He was a senior Director of Alex
Lawrie & Co. Ltd., whose Partners were the chief shareholders in Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd.
Mr. A Preston, after a long career in the Firm, was a Partner from 1907 to 1913.
Mr. A N Stuart, son of J N Stuart, joined London office in 1908 and became a Partner in 1914, and with
Mr. P Balmer Lawrie continued his interest in the Company.
Mr. J M Chisholm joined Balmer Lawrie & Co. in 1905, and after serving as Partner in Calcutta, was also
one of the Directors of Alex Lawrie & Co. Ltd.

Board of Directors, 1927
H C W Bishop, Sir Hubert Carr, A R Mellis (L-R Top)
J Alex Gemmell, W H Bradbury, W B Monair (L-R Bottom)
Most of the Directors served for considerable periods as Assistants in the Firm before joining as Partners
in the old Firm, or Directors in the new Company. Sir Hubert Carr became a Partner in 1914 and retired
as Managing Director in 1927. Mr. W B Monair and Mr. A R Mellis became Partners in 1921 and 1922,
and on the conversion into a Limited Company in 1924, these three partners became members of the
Board, which was shortly joined by Mr. J Alex Gemmell, son of Mr. John Gemmell, Mr. W H Bradbury
and Mr. H C W Bishop.
The responsibilities of the department and managed companies was distributed among the Directors and
each Director became a specialist in the activities under him. A typical arrangement in 1927 illustrates
the concept:
Sir Hubert Carr: Electrical, Machinery, Metals, Bombay, Travellers and BIECCO
Mr. A R Mellis: Cash, Tea Gardens, Tea Purchase, Insurance, Anglo Indian Carrying and
				Accounts
Mr. J A Gemmell: Paper, Flour, Ice, West Indies and Arthur Butler
Mr. H C W Bishop: Coal, Bridge & Roof and Indian Galvanising

39, he was appointed on the Board of Balmer Lawrie, and two years later, became its Chairman. He had a
vision for Balmer Lawrie, very different from his predecessor’s at a time when a new India was emerging.
He was convinced that for Balmer Lawrie to attain a strategic role in the national commerce and industry,
it had to seize growing opportunities in the manufacturing sector and that management practices in the
Company had to catch up and then keep pace with the changes. He also knew that the managing agency
system would not survive.
He backed Bridge & Roof for growth in the immediate future, decided that paper would be the ‘business’
of Balmer Lawrie in future, promoted the concept of ‘synergy’ within the Balmer Lawrie group,
which resulted in Tribeni Tissues (leveraged the paper technology of Bengal Paper and engineering
competence of Bridge & Roof) in 1951, tea warehouse in Chittagong in 1950 and consolidation around
the construction industry.
Contemporaries of Mr. Jenkins on the Board of Balmer Lawrie in the 1950s, recall with admiration the
practice he initiated of monthly meetings among the heads of all units in the Group. One of the Directors,
Mr. C D Wilson recalls, “a system he started was the meeting of Assistant Directors. That was the first
time that all the departments and managed companies talked to each other… it encouraged collective
thinking… it was a breath of fresh air…”. Sir Owain Jenkins left Balmer Lawrie in 1958, retiring at the
age of 51.

Sir Owain Jenkins (Mr. Owain Trevor Jenkins was conferred the knighthood
in 1958 and since then was known as Sir Owain Jenkins.)
OTJ Era
The practice of management had started changing with the beginning of the 20th
century. However, the management of the Company continued to be practiced
purely as an art. As a result, the standards of management practice across the
Company remained average, brilliance being confined to some outstanding
individuals. One such person was Mr. Owain Trevor Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins had joined Balmer Lawrie as an Assistant in 1929. Gifted with a
sharp and inquisitive mind, and an extraordinary ability to comprehend a vast
variety of subjects, he was highly analytical and objective. In 1946, at the age of
Sir Owain Jenkins was succeeded by Mr. A T Montgomery who took over
as Chairman from him. Mr. Montgomery was appointed to the Board along
with Sir Jenkins on 1st
January, 1946. He shared with Sir Owain Jenkins the
vision to broaden Balmer Lawrie’s manufacturing base. Coincidentally Mr.
Montgomery also retired at the age of 51 in the year 1961.
After the retirement of Mr. A T Montgomery, the mantle fell on Mr. C D
Wilson who had joined the Board in 1951. He had a distinguished career with
tea gardens being his forte. He however, left India in 1962, the year in which
Balmer Lawrie profits peaked at Rs. 29.41 lakhs.

Mr. C G Montgomery
Mr. Paul Gonsalves
Mr. C G Montgomery succeeded Mr. Wilson. Other fulltime members of the
Board in 1963 were Mr. H K Fitzgerald and Mr. D Manson. All three were
professionals of exceptional calibre. Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Manson were
chartered accountants whereas Mr. Fitzgerald had been with trading, Pakistan
operations and then tea gardens. Mr. Montgomery is remembered as a person
who would encourage subordinates to bring the best out of them. He allowed
considerable freedom to professionals. Mr. Manson was gifted with a brilliant
mind and tremendous grasp. Mr. Fitzgerald was known for his professional
brilliance and was a confirmed workaholic.
This was the last all British team of fulltime Directors to head Balmer Lawrie.
During 1920s & 1930s when the technique of grease was shrouded in secrecy
and no country was ready to share the knowledge, Balmer Lawrie took the
challenge to make grease in India. The visionary, Mr. Paul Gonsalves made
significant breakthrough in grease manufacturing. Later he was acknowledged
as ‘Father of the grease industry in India’.

The monk was pleased with this boy, as he had wanted to teach the students a lesson about integrity. The document then discusses events at Balmer Lawrie related to observing Vigilance Awareness Week and Constitution Day. BLOG ISSUE 46- Balmer Lawrie Quarterly Gazette

  • 2. Editorial I would like to begin the Editorial of the first issue of Balmer Lawrie Organisational Gazette [BLOG], our quarterly house journal, in the new financial year 2024-25 by quoting a thought which our leaders have voiced time and again, “We have seen times changing . . . We have seized opportunities in change!” This has probably been one of the key reasons why the Company has been able to traverse the awe-inspiring milestone of 157 years and has always remained profitable in its entire corporate journey. Today, the business environment is witnessing unprecedented changes and to stay relevant we have to look for opportunities that will drive growth. Steve Jobs once said, “Innovation is the ability to see change as an opportunity, not a threat.” IthasnowbecomecustomarytodedicatetheAprilissueofBalmerLawrieOrganisational Gazette [BLOG], our quarterly house journal to the Foundation Day celebrations. Balmer Lawrie was founded on 1st February 1867 and for us Balmer Lawriens, this day is very close to our hearts. On this day we proudly tell the world about our rich legacy, heritage and history. Balmer Lawrie stepped into its 158th year on 1st February 2024. Every year on this day, the Balmer Lawrie flag is hoisted at every location, a pledge is administered and C&MD’s message is read out. The celebrations follow on the Sunday post 1st February. This event holds immense significance and is the most awaited event for the employees and their families. Various programs are organised in the four regions with the objective of bringing the entire Balmer Lawrie family together. I believe that the Foundation Day celebrations is a unique employee engagement forum. It is also a platform to showcase our in-house talent. On this day we actually sense the strength in our diversity, we realise how fortunate we are to be part of an organisation that has always made profits in its journey since inception, we cherish the feeling of being together and we remind ourselves of our Leaders’ vision, our responsibility of upholding the reputation of our organisation, fostering our culture and enhancing our commitment to the various stakeholders. This issue of BLOG brings you glimpses of the different programs organised across locations pan India on 4th February 2024. With the beginning of the new Financial Year, let’s focus on our KPTs and strongly drive excellence in performance to stay ahead of competition. Hope the new financial year is a harbinger of success for all of us at Balmer Lawrie. BLOG wishes all of you a great FY 2024-25! As always, please send me any suggestion, feedback or contribution at mukhopadhyay.mohar@balmerlawrie.com. Organisational Gazette 2
  • 3. MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN & MANAGING DIRECTOR logistics, free trade warehousing zone, third party logistics and are planning to set up more Cold Chain Units. Visakhapatnam Port Logistics Park Limited (VPLPL) has become a holistic integrated logistics park in line with PM’s Gati Shakti initiative and the Container Freight Station commenced operations within the Hub last financial year. The Ethanol project is underway, we have started manufacturing textile and agro chemicals, and we are also exploring manufacturing of Rigid Industrial Bulk Containers (RIBC). I’m confident we’ll be able to show strong Y-O-Y growth in our businesses across sectors in 2024-25 and continue to maintain our position as market leaders in the various segments we operate. Our organisation’s performance is a result of the hard work and commitment of our employees. My hearty congratulations to the Leadership and all the team members! We signed an MOU with IIM Lucknow Enterprise Incubation Centre (IIML EIC) in February 2024 for incubation of Start-ups. • 4. An ode to our Leaders… They had dreams, hopes and the vision to create and drive our diverse Company, Their style, personalities and forte were unique but what was common was their passion, dedication, fearlessness and qualities so many. Their actions inspired others to learn, dream and do more, Their insight and ingenuity brought them achievements galore. Our Leaders walked the talk and stood tall in changing times, They seized opportunities in change and drove Balmer Lawrie to be a conglomerate that never ceases to shine. Founding Fathers, Stephen George Balmer (L) and Alexander Lawrie (R) Alexander Lawrie Senior Partner, 1867 - 1908 Driven by the spirit of entrepreneurship, two enterprising Scotsmen Stephen George Balmer and Alexander Lawrie came together to form the partnership firm, Balmer Lawrie & Co. at Kolkata on 1st February, 1867. History goes…a coin was tossed…Balmer won…his name preceded in the Firm incorporated and thus was born Balmer Lawrie. Soon after signing the co-partnership agreement, S G Balmer returned to England where he passed away on 21st May 1867 because of ‘Phthisis’, in London. Alexander Lawrie was therefore virtually the sole founder of Balmer Lawrie & Co. Mr. Alexander Lawrie passed away at Ruthin, Hampstead on 25th April 1908 at the age of 64 years. During the 41 years when he guided the destiny of the firm, not only in Calcutta but also in London, where he founded the firm of Alexander Lawrie & Co., Mr. Lawrie took an active part in other business interests as Director of the National Bank of India Ltd., The Alliance Assurance Co. and other concerns. • 7. 39, he was appointed on the Board of Balmer Lawrie, and two years later, became its Chairman. He had a vision for Balmer Lawrie, very different from his predecessor’s at a time when a new India was emerging. He was convinced that for Balmer Lawrie to attain a strategic role in the national commerce and industry, it had to seize growing opportunities in the manufacturing sector and that management practices in the Company had to catch up and then keep pace with the changes. He also knew that the managing agency system would not survive. He backed Bridge & Roof for growth in the immediate future, decided that paper would be the ‘business’ of Balmer Lawrie in future, promoted the concept of ‘synergy’ within the Balmer Lawrie group, which resulted in Tribeni Tissues (leveraged the paper technology of Bengal Paper and engineering competence of Bridge & Roof) in 1951, tea warehouse in Chittagong in 1950 and consolidation around the construction industry. Contemporaries of Mr. Jenkins on the Board of Balmer Lawrie in the 1950s, recall with admiration the practice he initiated of monthly meetings among the heads of all units in the Group. One of the Directors, Mr. C D Wilson recalls, “a system he started was the meeting of Assistant Directors. That was the first time that all the departments and managed companies talked to each other… it encouraged collective thinking… it was a breath of fresh air…”. Sir Owain Jenkins left Balmer Lawrie in 1958, retiring at the age of 51. Sir Owain Jenkins Mr. A T Montgomery Mr. C D Wilson Sir Owain Jenkins (Mr. Owain Trevor Jenkins was conferred the knighthood in 1958 and since then was known as Sir Owain Jenkins.) OTJ Era The practice of management had started changing with the beginning of the 20th century. However, the management of the Company continued to be practiced purely as an art. As a result, the standards of management practice across the Company remained average, brilliance being confined to some outstanding individuals. One such person was Mr. Owain Trevor Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins had joined Balmer Lawrie as an Assistant in 1929. Gifted with a sharp and inquisitive mind, and an extraordinary ability to comprehend a vast variety of subjects, he was highly analytical and objective. In 1946, at the age of Sir Owain Jenkins was succeeded by Mr. A T Montgomery who took over as Chairman from him. Mr. Montgomery was appointed to the Board along with Sir Jenkins on 1st January, 1946. He shared with Sir Owain Jenkins the vision to broaden Balmer Lawrie’s manufacturing base. Coincidentally Mr. Montgomery also retired at the age of 51 in the year 1961. After the retirement of Mr. A T Montgomery, the mantle fell on Mr. C D Wilson who had joined the Board in 1951. He had a distinguished career with tea gardens being his forte. He however, left India in 1962, the year in which Balmer Lawrie profits peaked at Rs. 29.41 lakhs. ISSUE 46, April 2024 7
  • 8. Mr. C G Montgomery Mr. Paul Gonsalves Mr. C G Montgomery succeeded Mr. Wilson. Other fulltime members of the Board in 1963 were Mr. H K Fitzgerald and Mr. D Manson. All three were professionals of exceptional calibre. Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Manson were chartered accountants whereas Mr. Fitzgerald had been with trading, Pakistan operations and then tea gardens. Mr. Montgomery is remembered as a person who would encourage subordinates to bring the best out of them. He allowed considerable freedom to professionals. Mr. Manson was gifted with a brilliant mind and tremendous grasp. Mr. Fitzgerald was known for his professional brilliance and was a confirmed workaholic. This was the last all British team of fulltime Directors to head Balmer Lawrie. During 1920s & 1930s when the technique of grease was shrouded in secrecy and no country was ready to share the knowledge, Balmer Lawrie took the challenge to make grease in India. The visionary, Mr. Paul Gonsalves made significant breakthrough in grease manufacturing. Later he was acknowledged as ‘Father of the grease industry in India’.
