The document discusses JavaEye, a popular Chinese technical blog. It describes the evolution of JavaEye's architecture over time from a single server running Ruby on Rails to a more complex distributed system with front-end web servers, backend application servers, a search server, database servers, and caching. It highlights the technologies used at each stage, including Lighttpd, Memcached, and search tools like Ferret and Lucene, and how caching improved performance by reducing SQL queries.
The document discusses wiki technology and how it can be used for collaboration. Some key points:
- Wiki allows quick and easy creation of web pages that multiple users can edit, making it a tool for collaboration. It stores all page versions so errors can be corrected.
- Wiki is used for knowledge management and organizing information to avoid email overload. Students and professionals use private wikis for group projects and internal discussions.
- Wiki values permanent knowledge that can be improved over time, unlike blogs which focus on latest news. Wiki content can be edited by any user while blog content cannot after posting.
- Wiki has advantages of collaborative work in one space and easy knowledge sharing, but the open editing can allow unreliable
Investors have been shying away from investing in Indian equity mutual funds as the sustained stock market slump has wiped out significant gains from 2007. While inflows into equity funds have declined in recent months, outflows have also remained relatively low as investors are not rushing to pull out of funds. The slowdown in equity fund flows has mainly impacted high net-worth and institutional investors, while regular investment plans have continued to see steady inflows.

This presentation will discuss using online tutoring in conjunction with face-to-face tutoring as two halves of a complete tutoring experience. We will look at the PCCC Writing Center’s combination of the use of eTutoring with face-to-face tutoring to help students improve not only individual papers, but also their writing in general.
The mediator pattern promotes loose coupling between classes by defining an object that encapsulates how groups of classes interact. It defines an intermediary object that manages interactions between peers instead of peers referring to each other directly. The mediator pattern identifies classes that could benefit from loose coupling, encapsulates their interactions in a mediator class, and has peer objects interact with the mediator instead of each other. This allows peer objects to be unaware of changes to other peer objects, reducing coupling between classes.

In-books are enhanced ebooks that include features like choices that determine the story's progression, ability to read from different characters' perspectives, and adaptations based on the reader's profile or environment. Inbooki aims to launch in the US and Italian markets, targeting genres like fantasy and thriller, and will generate revenue through an in-app store and partnerships with publishers.
Wikipedia: A Tool for Teaching (Skeptical) Research Elizabeth Nesius
Wikipedia is one form of social media, and often at the bull’s eye of “new media myopia” (Obar, 2012). When asked to do research, Wikipedia is usually the first place students look. While we might want to teach students that Wikipedia is one place to start, it usually is not the one place where we want them to end. Therefore, incorporating Wikipedia into classroom instruction is a powerful way to teach students how to analyze the sources they use. This presentation will introduce educators to possible ways Wikipedia can be utilized in the classroom as a teaching and learning tool.
Disruptive innovation refers to products or services that allow new groups of consumers access to products or services previously only available to those with more money or specialized skills. These innovations start simply and cheaply, then improve to appeal to more consumers, eventually displacing established competitors. Examples include Web 3.0, Walmart disrupting retail, Amazon disrupting shopping, Netflix disrupting theaters, Wikipedia disrupting Britannica, and e-learning disrupting brick-and-mortar schools. Sustaining innovation improves existing products for current consumers, while disruptive innovation targets new groups and eventually changes an entire industry. Successful disruptors can catalyze change in competitors who adapt to remain competitive.
People celebrate Christmas by commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Traditional symbols of Christmas include holly, which is believed to protect homes and bring good luck. Father Christmas is depicted as a man with white hair, a beard, and mustache who makes toys in his workshop in the North. He travels by sleigh pulled by reindeer. People decorate Christmas trees in their homes with stars, bells, baubles, and tinsel and place presents underneath. Traditional foods on Christmas Day include roast turkey and Christmas pudding for dessert. Elements of nativity scenes include shepherds, donkeys, angels, and the baby Jesus.

It also discusses designing applications for automated testing and decoupling design from production environments. Lastly, it provides an example of automating source control tasks like adding, committing, and updating files using a Ruby namespace and Rake tasks.
This document discusses message queues, which allow for the asynchronous and reliable communication between systems. Message queues provide benefits like durability, scalability, and offline processing. Examples are given where message queues could be used for asynchronous tasks like sending notification emails after a photo upload or processing videos after upload. Common message queue services and servers are listed.
The High School Connection: Bridging the Gap Between High School and CollegeElizabeth Nesius

The program works with local high school teachers across disciplines to promote a "writing to learn" approach. It details who is involved in the program, the rationale behind it, activities conducted including workshops for teachers on writing processes and using writing in various subjects, and lessons learned from limitations and challenges in implementing the program in high schools.
IRL: How Geeks Undermine Their Presentations & Conversations With Body Languagesarahnovotny
Watching my peers and staff speak and work with clients for many years, I have realized that many geeks are uncomfortable interacting IRL. But, you don’t have to be. There are some simple physical tricks to keeping an audience (of 1 or 1k) engaged and not undermining your skills and yourself. I’m going to talk about positioning of the body, head and hands in relation to the people you’re interacting with, in relation to the room, and in relation to yourself. I’ll outline some best practices, some behaviors to watch for in you, and even some things that you can watch for in other people.
