What is the problem?
Learning online processes
Students use several technological ecosystems for learning
How can I get insight about this learning process?
How can teachers understand these insights in order to improve the learning process?
What I want to do?
Know what happens in this kind of learning environments
Analyse these learning evidences
Help teachers to improve the learning processes by using the knowledge raised by the
analysis of the evidences
Goals
Review the State of the Art of Learning Analytics and related research fields
Define how to retrieve evidences from heterogeneous learning ecosystems
Define data analysis processes to treat these evidences
Define data visualisations that allow the analyst (teachers) to understand the analysis
and later apply this knowledge to improve the learning processes and make decisions.
Research areas related
Data Science
Software Engineering
Visual Analytics
Decision Making
How can I achieve the goals?
That’s the point in this PhD project (and almost in all)
How can I achieve the goals?
Action Research Methodology
Development - Test - Review - Improve
Expected outcomes
Proposal of software/data architecture to bind/store data from heterogeneous learning
ecosystems
Use and propose (if it is necessary) algorithms to get valuable knowledge from the
learning evidences retrieved from those ecosystems
Propose and test data visualisations and other tools for visual analytics that help
teachers to make decisions about the students’ learning path and improve it
