- 1. Welcome to the 2013 MSGA Annual Meeting!
- 2. Our Mission The mission of the Maine State Golf Association is to represent, promote and serve the best interest of amateur golf in Maine. The MSGA, an association of member clubs and their players, accomplishes this mission through services including: • Scholarships • GHIN Handicapping • Golf Education • Junior Golf • Tournaments • Course Ratings

- 5. 63rd Anniversary of Scholarship Fund Awarded 12 scholarships for 2013-2014 school year for $1,500 each – a total commitment of $72,000! Thanks to all who have given to the Scholarship Fund either through memorial, cash or prize voucher donations! .

- 8. Have instituted minimum performance criteria for students on scholarship, who intend to renew their scholarships. They must: Maintain a 1.8 or better average their first year, a 2.0 or better average their sophomore year and a 2.5 or better average for their final two years.
- 10. Club licensing has become an integral part of the handicap system All clubs in Maine need recertification for the 2012-2016 cycle On-line seminars are available for anyone interested in becoming licensed and we will be hosting at least one seminar this fall – watch the web site for more information! Everyone at the MSGA can answer most GHIN questions – and if they don’t have the answer, they’ll forward you to someone who does! From the USGA’s web site at www.usga.org
- 11. In accordance with the Rules of Handicapping, the MSGA has developed its own review process for all players competing in MSGA events. We have developed a system whereby players who meet the following criteria will be automatically reviewed :

Review Criteria: Score a net differential of three shots or more under the Course Rating for any given MSGA tournament; Play to their handicap or better (equal or less than the course rating) in 25 percent or more of MSGA events; and/or Play well enough to consistently place in the gross or net prize money in any individual flight, with “consistently” being defined as 25 percent or more of the time.
- 14. •Special thanks to Jim O’Mara of Charles River Country Club who came up in April to conduct a one-day advanced rules class for MSGA volunteers and Maine PGA professionals. •The class was the first joint event ever offered by the MSGA and the Maine Chapter of the PGA. We look forward to doing more in the future!

- 17. •This Year’s Maine Junior Golf Tour featured: –17 Days of Tournament Golf, six of which were joint Junior/Senior tournaments –The Kit Bartlett Memorial at Belgrade Lakes –The TK Memorial Maine PGA Pro-Junior –The Maine Junior Championship –Maine finishing third in the New England Junior Invitational Championship
- 18. The MSGA was very fortunate this year to welcome Emily Bouchard, the threetime defending Maine Women’s Amateur Champion (shown here with MWA Junior Champ Monica Austin), as our Director of Junior/Senior Golf. Way to go Emily!!!
- 19. cPort FCU tournament at Riverside to benefit The First Tee of Maine

TK Memorial Maine PGA Pro Junior Championship at Val Halla We were very fortunate to be able to work with the Maine Chapter of the NEPGA to host the Maine Pro-Junior Championship in conjunction with the Scholarship Banquet immediately prior to the start of the Maine Junior Championship. Thanks to Brian Bickford and Tony Decker for making this happen!
- 21. Next year, we will be adding York’s Bracy tournament to our schedule Are there other junior playing opportunities on which we can work collaboratively?
- 22. •Mike Doran has been working to promote the Player Representative Program to help encourage more participation at the club level. •Benefits to having a player rep: • MSGA has direct contact to promote events • Players receive a $5 discount on MSGA membership dues when joining through the player rep • More players are encouraged to play • The players have a greater influence on MSGA policy (i.e. playing from different tees)
- 23. •Ask a friend to join the MSGA • For the remainder of 2013, when a new member joins the MSGA, the membership will also be good for the entire 2014 season, start to finish • Now is a great time to ask a friend to join!

More than 140 days of MSGA tournament play including Weekend, Mid-Week, Juniors & Seniors 3 New England Events, 1 USGA Qualifier Helped with the Maine Women’s Amateur Conducted the Maine Collegiate Championship Officiated at College League Championships Thanks to David Colt for photography at the Open, Am and Junior championships.
- 26. Special thanks go out to Augusta Country Club for not only hosting the Maine Amateur and Charlie’s Maine Open tournaments but also for Mid-Week, Senior and Weekend events
- 27. Winning his second Open tournament of the summer below is our 2013 Champion Evan Harmeling, who donated all of his winning from his first championship, the Mass Open to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Class act!
- 28. • New events this year: • Pop Erswell Memorial in May • MSGA County Tour in June • Dave Richardson Memorial in July • Downeast Tour in October • Expanded Mid-Week Specials • Next year we will have some combined Junior/Senior/Weekend events in the Central Division
- 29. And we also tried: • Two-Tee tournaments • Tested first at Fox Ridge • Also tested at Sunday River • Feedback was great – and the continuation of the process will be discussed by the Tournament Committee this fall
- 30. • More than $200,000 will go back to our Member Clubs in User fees • Another $150,000 will be given in prize money, which also is redeemable at our Member Clubs • These numbers represent more than 40% of revenue raised by the MSGA this year.

Every golf course has both a COURSE and a SLOPE rating Course rating is the difficulty of the golf course for the scratch golfer Slope rating is the difficulty of the golf course for the BOGEY golfer as compared to the SCRATCH golfer Every set of tees at every golf course has a TARGET score, which is the COURSE RATING plus your COURSE HANDICAP Target scores are used in determining handicap adjustments for different tees

- 45. The Maine Golf Foundation Committee : Brings together golf organizations throughout the state physically, in the Maine Golf House and houses the MSGA, the SMWGA, the First Tee of Maine and the Maine Golf Course Superintendents as well as providing meeting space for other golf organizations
- 46. The Maine Golf Foundation Committee : Promotes golf and its life-enhancing values throughout the state by: Honoring the game, Sustaining the game, Growing the game.
- 48. A Strategic Planning Committee of the MSGA has been formed to look into long range planning, develop a new mission statement and look at our future direction
- 49. We have put together a diverse and talented committee to get as many individuals and groups involved in golf in Maine involved to see how to best work together for golf

MSGA Wendy’s Junior Tour Wendy’s, which has long supported the MSGA, continues to sponsor our Junior Tour This sponsorship helps us to defray the cost of running the Junior Tour, the only program the MSGA offers that does not pay for itself. Prizes for the Maine Junior Championship, were provided by Golf & Ski Warehouse – thanks to G&SW for your continued support!
- 56. MSGA Harris Cup Harris Golf, a huge proponent of the MSGA and Amateur Golf, started the Harris Cup last year, to encourage more players to compete in the weekend events. Harris Cup winners will be determined at the end of the posting season on October 31. Nearly $20,000 in prizes will be awarded for Harris Cup points in the coming month! There’s still time to win Harris Cup points – are YOU on the tee sheet?
