2011 Final CAP Presentation
1. 2011 MSGA CAP Final PresentationKey Projects Marketing / Advertising
3. Other Technological AdvancesWhen we submitted our grant application we stated two major projects as definite goals. We wanted to do a better job of marketing the MSGA or the MSGA brand if you will, and to explore to possibilities of additional revenue through advertising, such as event sponsors, ads on our website and newsletters. The other main project was to create something we called MSGA University. We’re hoping this interactive learning center will help cut down on the many troubleshooting and “How To” phone calls and emails, as well as the numerous site visits made by staff and encourage the clubs to make better use of the technology that’s available to them. We’re hoping that when someone calls we can simply refer them to the tutorials, in turn cutting down on expenses of staff time, travel reimbursement and so forth. The third key point here of “Other Technological Advances” is to show you some of the other minor projects that we worked on throughout the programs 6 month period.
4. 2011 MSGA CAP Final PresentationKey ProjectsLets first look at advertising and marketingMarketing / Advertising
34. MSGA Tournament Schedule39 Weekend EventsAll totaling over 140 daysof tournament playWe do this with a staff of two full time and 5 part time individuals.Whenever I go to national meetings it seems like the topic of conversation always turns to how much, such a small association does with a small staff and a short season.
37. Past Events / How To PageSo let’s look at how “Online Scoring” has been used for marketing purposes.
38. I always create a web page for each individual event. This contains all the pertinent information for that tournament, such as Photos and Write Ups on what took place that day, we always try and recognize past champions and of course a link to the actual scoring. This was the homepage for our recent B&C Championship. You can see we try and promote the club, add a description of the event, the winners …
39. … links to this year’s scoring as well as previous years. And this little QR code thing here which we will talk more about in a couple minutes.
40. And here is the actual scoring page of another recent event. I’m sure you’ve all seen some of this type of content but it sure is generating a lot of interest in our area. The players and fans just love being able to check out the players scores and all the other information that is available here.
41. I also created a webpage with links to all the past championships but more importantly a kind of “How to” section for our “technologically challenged friends”.
42. Marketing / AdvertisingGenerating RevenueMarketingAdvertisingNow let’s look at those QR codes we just talked about. It’s something like a bar code but contains more information and has a quicker response time than standard bar codes, hence the name QR for quick response.Examples pdf
56. Use of QR Code at Junior Amateur ChampionshipHere is an example of a young man scanning the code at this year’s Junior Championship. When I read somewhere that 60% of web use is now through mobile devices, I had to get in on the action.
69. BrochuresMobile ApplicationAgain for our Smartphone users I’ve been working on a mobile application. I haven’t published it yet because there’s still some tweaking to do, but I’m hoping to again attract our young fans as well as the older business man that finds his Blackberry, IPhone or Android phone an increasing part of life..
70. Marketing / AdvertisingGenerating RevenueMarketingOne of the most outreaching initiatives we’ve undertaken this season is to explore some radio marketing. Online Scoring
77. BrochuresMSGA Weekly Radio RoundupEvery Monday morning and again in the afternoon, we feature a radio re-cap of the previous week's MSGA competitive play. The broadcast can be heard on stations throughout Maine. In addition, the 6 stations will each broadcast 16) 60 second MSGA commercials per week that also highlight that week’s sponsor with name, location and website address. Also, 20 to 30 promos will run on each of the radio stations every week to direct listeners to the MSGA Weekly Roundup.
78. What we’re calling the MSGA weekly roundup is a series of 30 second and 60 second spots that promote the MSGA, our host clubs and the event in general. The broadcasts are carried on 6 radio stations that cover 90% of Maine’s most populated areas.
79. Again I’ve created a web page with links to past audio files, so if you miss the radio program you can always check it out here. For an example of what we feel are well done, professional radio spots go to our website at www.mesga.org and look for the MSGA Weekly Roundup link .
80. Marketing / AdvertisingGenerating RevenueMarketingAnother nice marketing strategy is what we call our prize give a way program.Online Scoring
87. BrochuresWe’ve been able to acquire some nice prizes from some of the golf equipment manufactures and we have a random drawing to give them away. All you have to do to qualify is play in one of our weekly weekend or senior events and your name is automatically entered. Here’s that webpage and you can see we’ve had 3 lucky winners already. We also record the actual drawing and post it on YouTube so everyone can see how it’s done and is totally above board.
88. In appreciation for your support!Prize Give Away PromotionAll you have to do to win is play. Someone will win one of the products listed below.
89. Here’s a screen shot of one of the YouTube video’s that can be accessed from the Prize Give Away web page.
145. Brochures16 Page Color BrochureShowing examples of areas of advertising on the MSGA website and MSGA newslettersI first created a16 page color brochure showing areas of advertising on the MSGA website and newsletters.
174. BrochuresNewsletter AdvertisingWe were able to sell website advertising such as these ads and also have landed a major sponsor for our newsletters.
187. BrochuresGHIN Scoring ScreensOn GHIN scoring computers we used the GHIN sponsorship manager application and we were able to generate some income with these ads as well. All totaled were looking at between $ 15,000 and $20,000 in ad revenue, so we’re really pleased with how this project has worked out.
201. Maine Open SponsorshipThe last advertising example shown here was to create an event specific website for the Maine Open. Charlie’s Motor Mall a local car dealer and friend of golf paid us $20,000 to be the title sponsor of this event, so we really needed to show that we could help market his dealerships and we hope to continue our relationship with Charlie’s for years to come
202. 2011 MSGA CAP Final PresentationNow let’s look at theMSGA University projectKey Projects Marketing / Advertising
204. Other Technological AdvancesOur Online Learning CenterThis is divided into two campuses; Tutorials for the club manager or handicap chairman andtutorials for the player.
205. Tutorials for the Club Manager / Handicap ChairmanYou can see here that I haven’t gotten too far with these because we’ve been so busy during our championship season, but the basic structure is all in place now so the rest will go pretty fast …
206. Tutorials for the Player… and we don’t anticipate this project to ever be done as I’ll add videos and text entries whenever someone calls with a question that would make a good tutorial.
207. Tutorials for the Club Manager / Handicap ChairmanMost topics will have both a video lesson and a printable one.
208. The printable text version opens up a .pdf file that walks the user step by step through whatever task he is trying to do.
209. Here is the video version of the same lesson.
210. Future goals will be, to of course continue to add as much content as possible to the MSGA University and the other thing we’re planning for next year is to have a series of workshops at various venues throughout our state on topics such as the Rules of Golf and Handicapping, the GHIN program, TPP program and how their new online versions will affect our clubs.Future goals: Add to both Campuses – Club & Player
211. Create an onsite learning series for 20122011 MSGA CAP Final PresentationLet’s quickly look at some of the smaller tasks we’ve been able to complete with the use of the USGA fundingKey Projects Marketing / Advertising
221. www.firsteemaine.orgMany website improvements. I’ve been responsible for administering or assisting with a total of 5 different websites, so that alone is enough to keep busy
227. Photo Albums Home PageGoogle Documents & CalendarWe initiated the use of Google docs and Google calendar as a portal where staff can share documents and other types of information.
233. Photo Albums Home PageI’ve completely revamped our player of the year points program. We now have player of the year points, senior player of the year points and of course a webpage explaining how it all works.
234. Player of the Year PointsRevised to Use TPP Online Points Application Player of the Year Points
236. How are points awardedPlayer of the Year PointsOld VersionThis is what the webpage looked like before and we caught a lot of grief from the players because it wasn’t updated often enough and there just wasn’t enough information available.
237. Player of the Year PointsNew VersionNow the webpage has these two interactive tablesDemo
238. Let’s quickly look at this area of our website. Again we see the points tables as well as links to help pages and previous versions of the point tables. By clicking on “View Full Results” we can access all kinds of information.
239. By again clicking on a player’s name, all the events that he received points for are displayed, and you can keep data mining by clicking a specific event which takes you to the scoring of that event and all the way into the player’s scorecard. This has been a well received, great improvement over the previous way we did things.
245. Photo Albums Home PageOnline Tee Time FormI was able to create Online tee time forms. This shows a part of the fall one. We break our weekend schedule into three parts; spring summer and fall, and players can register for a block of events at the same time by using this form.
251. Photo Albums Home PageJob Opportunities Web PageI created a job opportunities page when we were asked if we could help spread the word about specific available jobs in the industry.
257. Photo Albums Home PageOnline Registration Help PagesAgain because I’m always wanting to explain how stuff works I created an online registration help page where website visitors can access explanations of how to create an online profile, how to join MSGA and pay dues online and so forth.
263. Photo Albums Home PagePhoto Album Home PageAnd I also created a photo albums page. Photo’s or links to photos were strewed around throughout the website so I made a home page where all the various event photo albums are contained …
264. … and players or the media can quickly find what their looking for and download a photo for their own use.
269. Hardware / Software UpdatesGHIN ACRDB / USGA NCRDBAt the beginning of the season I tackled the project of matching up the GHIN CR database with that of the USGA’s. I was quite surprised when I found that out of 130 clubs there was 96 instances where the data did not match. This took quite a while to correct but we’re now confident that any merging of databases will go very easy for us.
274. Hardware / Software Updates“Excel” Help Desk Support FilesIn order to better track what was going on with GHIN support I instituted a help desk type program with a simple Excel document.Every course has their own sheet at the bottom and each sheet contains such information as contacts, club number, passwords and the like. When a club calls for support I login what was discussed and how the problem was solved. This file should be very beneficial in handling future similar calls by the same course or by a different course.
279. Hardware / Software UpdatesPlans for New Office RenovationsI’ve got a construction background so I was asked if I could come up with a design for our upcoming office renovations. I was able to produce a plan with some of the old AutoCad software I still have.
286. New PC Tournament Director Recovered files from crashed hard-drive
287. Networking On site setup at all championships for wireless networking etc.And lastly I’ve been able to help the association with purchasing new computers and recovering lost files when our Tournament director’s hard drive crashed.
288. 2011 MSGA CAP Final PresentationSo there you have it, a brief walk through of everything we’ve accomplished and I personally as well as our whole association thank you again for the funding and considering us for your program.Key ProjectsMarketing / Advertising
