Providing a historical record -not just of a time or an event - but also of the place where the photo was taken.

How do you develop a website for the iPhone? Adjust an existing site Create an iPhone specific web application tailored visually and functionally to the iPhone’s layout and interface Create an iPhone application and publish it through the App Store
PhillyHistory.org for the iPhone http://phillyhistory.org/i Design from a functional standpoint – things had to go Focus on the geographic search Follow the screen per function guideline Utilize the OpenLayers API to display maps Keep the same search logic as the PhillyHistory website Make it location aware Google Android
What’s Next? Augmented Reality NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up Grant One year time frame $50,000 grant Goal is to support planning stages and a working prototype
Augmented what? Augmented Reality – the overlaying of digital data or computer generated imagery on a live view of the physical world Image courtesy of Mr3641 from Wikimedia Commons.
How does it work? Utilize a smart phone’s camera, internal GPS, compass and accelerometer capabilities Pick a platform – Google Android, Apple iPhone, 3 rd party platform Work with Wikitude, Layar, or another system Image from Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/dmsblog/index.php/2010/04/16/new-version-of-powerhouse-museum-in-layar-augmented-reality-browsing-of-museum-photos-around-sydney/
Using Augmented Reality to Connect the Past and the Present Data or images appear on your smart phone and tell you more about the physical structure or environment you are viewing Overlays of 500 historic photographs of locations around the city Additional contextual information for 20 images
So What’s the Plan? Select the images – focus on downtown neighborhoods with perhaps some images across the city Set the Google Street View for the images Develop a system design and user interface Develop a prototype Make applications available for beta testing
Why Augmented Reality? Engage students in the study of history, architecture, and photography Enhance local tourism Build on the rich geographic resources of PhillyHistory.org Provide another opportunity for the public to interact with the images Investigate the viability of AR as an educational tool
Asking Questions and Finding Answers Will the level of GPS accuracy allow true point-and-view functionality in crowded urban settings? What is the most effective user interface? How should additional information be displayed without interrupting the AR experience? Will processing times be fast enough to provide the augmented reality data in real-time fashion?
Potential Results? Time traveling to the 1876 Centennial
