Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 –Background ” Scientia potentia est (Francis Bacon).” From knowledge management to information sharing? An active citizen demands information and wants to participate and interact. He wants to do things and inform instead of being the object of information. The greater amount of information is produced digitally every day and 24/7 availability is expected. This creates a pressure for municipal governments to develop new, alternative ways of democratic participation and decision making. Library users are getting more and more accustomed to use Internet and expect up-to-date network services. Especially juniors. The libraries and librarians have to redefine their space and roles in this world of the Internet. Web Library 2.0 will serve as  a modern forum for local community and a channel for information and interaction for inhabitants of Hämeenlinna City.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 –  The starting point Web 2.0 technology and philosophy:  Presages a freeing of data. Permits the building of virtual applications. Is participative. Applications work for the user. Applications are modular. Is about sharing: code, content, ideas.  Is about communication and facilitating community. Is about remix. Is smart. Opens up the Long Tail. Is built upon TRUST.(Paul Miller, Technology Evangelist, Talis)
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  The starting point Hämeenlinna Library’s existing Internet services as well the nationwide Internet services are fragmented and the only possibile to integrate them is linking. The user interfaces of the library systems are out of date. Our web library, Web-Origo has not been developed recently. Hämeenlinna Library’s existing home pages needs renewing. We update them manually writing html code. Internet is more and more important marketing channel, a library’s shop window. People are not visiting the library physically as often as in the old days, before Internet, Google. But do we know what kind of net service our custemers are waiting? Are we able to evaluate our recouses in Hämeenlinna Library?
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 – The project  Launched in spring 2007  In cooperation with the Akateeminen Tietopalvelu (ATP). (The supplier of the library IT system.) -> merged 1.1.2008 Axiell Library Group Axiell Arena – the virtual library. Axiell Portal: the virtual library + library’s webpage. The technological base. Liferay portal sofware. The open source portal solution. Teamwork. Axiell. The stuff of the Hämeenlinna City Library. Other libraries? Customers? Other Arena libraries in Sweden, Denmark?  The project is being carried out with the support of Ministry of Education. The service should be ready for production use in Juny 2009. Hämeenlinna is one of the pilot libraries of Axiell Arena.  Other pilot libraries are:  Norrköpings   stadsbibliotek   (Sweden) and Espjerg kommunes biblioteker (Denmark)

One versatile user interface, various background systems: Integrations with services from beyond the library such as the nationwide library and literature Internet services and Hämeenlinna Library’s Linklibrary and our Local Wikipedia. The other local web services of Hämeenlinna City. Technological and business partners, bookstores, Googlebooks, Wikipedia.. Usability, open access.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  Carefree information retrieval 2. Quick, carefree and successful information retrieval ” Google search” + advanced search, clustering (facets), Information search and location is easy. Indexing of background systems, quick search. Linking services (SFX). Multi- federated search. Guiding information search, ”0-hit” help. The system which supports customers to help themselves. A Relevant information search result.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  Attractive and visible 3. Modern, attractive and visible Adding rich enhancements, such as reviews, book jackets, similar titles,consisting of front pages, summaries, portraits of authors, samples of texts or music, Googlebooks, Library Thing. Focusing on the presentation of the collection: attractiveness, links, hints, The Long Tail, serendipity. Reliability. Up-to-date. Come out of a bookstore! Let your personality show! Visibility. Google. A library module in other Internet services? What is essential? What is library’s service consept?
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  Partisipative and communal 4.  Participation services and communality. Patrons can take part in production of contents: tags, reviews, polling, rating,recommendating. Communality, interaction, communicating, meeting place. Literary circles, literary discussions. A two-way, active information channel between patrons and librarians. Communality and cooperation of the libraries and librarians. Shared reviews, recommendation lists, a reading diploma.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  My Library 5. Personalization, own profile. A patron can login to his own account and edit it according to his own profile. A patron can manage his own information and own pages. A patron can order information as RSS-feeds for example about new arrivals. A patron can make individual, formable views. A patron can make own collections, bookshelves.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  Forever beta Forever beta. Continuing evaluation. Openess. Continuing informing. Interactive. Common knowledge. The change of the organisation culture, a new attitude? Blogs, wikis? Effective marketing. Curses, workshops, rooming-in? Working together. Pupils, teachers, librarians, customers. Who is a teacher? Who is an advisor? Changed roles.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  The Service Consept Our goal is to form a functional library-minded Internet community for the Hämeenlinna region, which will be part of all Finnish public libraries’ shared interaction and information forum. The function of the library community is to strengthen an individual’s identity by supporting creativity and by offering culture, information and opportunities for social influence.
Hämeenlinna Web Library 2.0 -  The Service Consept The home pages edited by the Hämeenlinna City Library constitute one part of  Arena  –services which has been built on Liferay platform, an open source portal software. Library info, news, activities, music, reading, children and young people, ask and tell  In the middle of the service there is Axiell Arena- an interactive web library. Makupalat  – A Link Library of the Hämeenlinna City Library and  Häme-Wiki   – A local Wikipedia of Hämeenlinna City Library are the compact parts of the project.
