Dell World 2014
Labels Overview
Definition
• A highly customizable organizational tag that is assigned to the K1000 objects
Purpose
• Enables grouping of the K1000 objects for targeting those objects in the K1000
• Typically grouped by some common criteria (OS type, location, software version,
etc.)
Types
• Manual labels
• LDAP labels
• Smart labels

Smart Labels Overview
Definition
• A label that is automatically assigned to objects that appear in a SQL query’s results
• Don’t specify the objects, specify the criteria for the objects
Types of Smart Labels
• Device (desktops, laptops, etc.)
• Software
• Patch (security, application, etc.)
• Dell Packages (BIOS updates, drivers, etc.)
• Discovery
Purposes
• Organization and identification
• Automation of tasks

Aspects of Smart Labels
Smart label (SQL query)
• SQL query performs the “search”, K1000 automatically handles labeling of the
results
Ordering
• Smart Labels > Choose Action > Order * Smart Labels
• Labels with smaller values are applied before those with larger values
Metering Enabled
• Target machines for collecting metering data on metering-enabled software
Application Control
• Target machines to prevent running disallowed software
Application of Smart Labels depends on Object Type
• Machine Smart labels on machine check-in, others evaluated & applied
immediately

Creating Smart Labels
Directly available in some screens
• Inventory: Devices, Software, Discovery Results
• Security: Patch Management Catalog, Dell Updates Catalog
Straightforward construction
• Specify criteria, test label, specify name and save (new or replace existing)
Features of the Smart Label Wizard
• No limits on the number of criteria
• Criteria grouping (Device Identity, Operating System, Software Info, etc.)
• Able to group by sets of criteria for logically complex labels
• Wizard-created Smart labels can be re-edited using the wizard

Managing Smart Labels
Organization
• Using prefixes in names extremely helpful
• Notes field in Label Management and Smart Labels screens useful for more info
Label Groups
• Useful for further categorization of Smart labels
• Can help simplify names
• Greatest benefit is for condensing Labels in View by drop-down menus
• Can’t be targeted like labels for Patching, Managed Installs or Replication Shares
Deleting Smart Labels
• Containing label still exists
• Only deletes the Smart Label criteria
Dell World 2014
Smart Label Applications
Target groups of objects using Smart labels
• Almost anywhere the Labels option exists to limit deployments
Managed Installations
• Target machines with transient Smart labels (machines without certain applications)
Patching
• Target machines with a Machine Smart label, target patches with a Patch Smart
label
• Configure Patch Subscriptions and Patch Schedules to target applicable labels
Scripting
• Automation of tasks
Focused Reporting
• Specify topics and fields, then filter on the label name
