Revitalizing the Classroom through Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning Presented by: Arnel O. Rivera
An Old Buddhist Tale
Bruce Lee , the legendary martial artist, once told a story about a highly-educated man who went to a Zen teacher to ask and acquire knowledge about Zen.
As the Zen teacher began to explain things, the man would frequently interrupt with remarks like , "Oh, yes, we have that too…”
Finally the Zen teacher stopped talking. He began to serve tea. He poured tea into the man’s cup.
He poured tea into the cup until it was full, and then kept pouring until the cup overflowed. "Enough!" the man once more interrupted, "No more can go into the cup!"
“ Indeed, I see," answered the Zen teacher, "If you do not first empty the cup, how can you taste my cup of tea?"
A full cup cannot accept anything more. Similarly, a person who believes that he had learnt a lot cannot learn anything else & will stagnate quickly and not move to higher levels.

How does technology enhance teaching and learning?
The Millennial Generation “ Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach” Mark Prensky
Millennial Attitudes “ I have to ‘ power down ’ when I go to school.” “ When I am really busy, I hate going to school because I can’t do any work there.”
Video Games and HOTS “ Better theories of learning are embedded in the video games many children play than in the schools they attend.” James Paul Gee What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy
“ Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time.” Hebrew proverb (As cited by Gavin Dudeney in IATEFL Cardiff 2009 Online Forum)
“ If our skills do not keep pace with the changes, sooner or later we shall be left behind” Fr. Juan Vecchi (Acts of the General Council 370)

Why do teachers avoid using technology? Walang gamit. Mahirap gamitin. Nakakatakot, baka masira. Di ako marunong. Ayaw ko eh.....
Why use technology in the classroom? It cannot be avoided. Students expect it. It really helps.
It cannot be avoided Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don’t use technology will be replaced by those who do. Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach
Students expect it. They [Students] thrive on multitasking and expect that the technology devices that they use in their everyday lives be a part of their educational process. (Baird & Fisher, 2006; Skiba, 2006 as cited in Badowski, 2009, p. 37)
It really helps. Teachers who use multiple media in their classrooms can assist their students to expedite the learning process and retain the material better. (Moreno & Mayer, 2002 as cited in Badowski, 2009, p. 37)
What is E-Learning? Learning facilitated and supported through the use of information and communications technology’ (JISC, 2007) E-Learning is defined as students developing knowledge, skills and understanding, through the use of computer-based technologies. (Boulton, 2009, p.11)
What is E-Learning? Internet-based, CD-ROM based, telephone-based, video-based learning activities are all considered as e-learning. Today, the vast majority of e-learning takes place on the web through a web browser (Internet Explorer,Firefox, Safari...). (Praetere, 2008)
General Reasons for Adopting E-learning Strategies (MacKeogh & Fox , 2009) Enhancing Reputation Developing Information Skills/Literacies Widening Access Supporting the Disabled Student Improving Quality of Teaching and Learning Increasing Flexibility Reducing Cost/Improving Cost-Effectivenes
Improving Quality of Teaching and Learning Many local and foreign universities widely use computers “as an instrument of learning …” In the Philippines, computer literacy has been one of the thrusts of the government through the Department of Education and some private institutions” (Diculen, 2008)

What is Blended Learning? Blended Learning is a blending of different learning methods, techniques and resources and applying them in an interactively meaningful learning environment. (Wikipedia)
Blended learning aims to join the best of classroom teaching and learning with the best of online teaching and learning. Rochester Institute (2004)
Common Tools in E-Learning Electronic Presentation (Powerpoint) Multi-Media (Videos) Internet (Slideshare & Quizmaker)
Objectives: Learn and apply the Guidelines for Creating and Using Effective PowerPoint Presentations Learn the effective use of multi-media (videos) in classroom instruction Upload PPT presentations using Slideshare and create an online quiz using Quiz Maker
Making PowerPoint Slides Avoiding the Pitfalls of Bad Slides
Hints for a successful presentation Plan carefully Do your research Know your audience Practice your presentation Speak at a comfortable pace and project to your audience
Outline Make your 1 st or 2 nd slide an outline of your presentation Ex: previous slide Follow the order of your outline for the rest of the presentation Only place main points on the outline slide Ex: Use the titles of each slide as main points
Use 1-2 slides per minute of your presentation Write in point form, not complete sentences Include 4-5 points per slide Avoid wordiness: use key words and phrases only
This page contains too many words for a presentation slide. It is not written in point form, making it difficult both for your audience to read and for you to present each point. Although there are exactly the same number of points on this slide as the previous slide, it looks much more complicated. In short, your audience will spend too much time trying to read this paragraph instead of listening to you.
Show one point at a time: Will help audience concentrate on what you are saying Will prevent audience from reading ahead Will help you keep your presentation focused
Do not use distracting animation Do not go overboard with the animation Be consistent with the animation that you use
Use at least an 18-point font Use different size fonts for main points and secondary points this font is 24-point, the main point font is 28-point, and the title font is 36-point Use a standard font like Times New Roman or Arial
If you use a small font, your audience won’t be able to read what you have written CAPITALIZE ONLY WHEN NECESSARY. IT IS DIFFICULT TO READ Don’t use a complicated font
Colour - Good Use a colour of font that contrasts sharply with the background Ex: blue font on white background Use colour to reinforce the logic of your structure Ex: light blue title and dark blue text Use colour to emphasize a point But only use this occasionally
Colour - Bad Using a font colour that does not contrast with the background colour is hard to read Using colour for decoration is distracting and annoying . Using a different colour for each point is unnecessary Using a different colour for secondary points is also unnecessary T r y i n g t o b e c r e a t i v e c a n a l s o b e b a d
Background - Good Use backgrounds such as this one that are attractive but simple Use backgrounds which are light Use the same background consistently throughout your presentation
Background – Bad Avoid backgrounds that are distracting or difficult to read from Always be consistent with the background that you use
Graphs - Good Use graphs rather than just charts and words Data in graphs is easier to comprehend & retain than is raw data Trends are easier to visualize in graph form Always title your graphs
Graphs - Bad
Graphs - Good
Graphs - Bad
Spelling and Grammar Proof your slides for: speling mistakes the use of of repeated words grammatical errors you might have make If English is not your first language, please have someone else check your presentation!
Conclusion Use an effective and strong closing Your audience is likely to remember your last words Use a conclusion slide to: Summarize the main points of your presentation Suggest future avenues of research
Questions?? End your presentation with a simple question slide to: Invite your audience to ask questions Provide a visual aid during question period Avoid ending a presentation abruptly
Activity: Create a powerpoint presentation using the selection given in your worksheet.
Using Multi-media in Educational Settings
The biggest enemy to learning is the talking teacher. (John Holt)
What is Multi-Media? Multi-media is a medium of instruction which incorporates the use of sound, pictures and words .
The Use of Multi-Media is not a Modern Technology
Films are an excellent supplement to the classroom. It helps students to think critically about the topic and to engage in meaningful class discussion.
Tips for Effective Film Viewing View the film prior to showing it to class. Consider the following questions as you view the film. Does the content merit the lesson? How does it relate the course material? Are there portions of the film that can be skipped. Is there any offensive portion contained in the material?
Provide the students with vocabulary and names that they will encounter in the clip. Always watch the film with the class. Provide a framework for viewing the film. Give the students a set of questions to consider when watching the film. Tips for Effective Film Viewing
After viewing, summarize the main points of the film with the students. Facilitate the discussion that will make the connection between the film, the lesson and their actual life. Tips for Effective Film Viewing
Film Analysis: Wheels of Misfortune Identify at least five road safety rules violated in the video.
Workshop: Create a pre-viewing and post viewing guide question about the short film presented.
Summary and Conclusions How does technology enhance teaching and learning?
Technology provides teachers the opportunity to connect with their students outside their classrooms…. (Badowski, 2009)
But technology in itself will NOT immediately enhance teaching and learning.
Consequently, technology should give teachers the opportunity to connect with their students more effectively and as a result of this connection, become better teachers.
Challenge to Teachers Through technology… connect and be creative, connect and be interesting, connect and be relevant, connect and be BETTER .
Points to Ponder “ My Child, remember my teachings ….. and obey them completely. They will help you live a long and successful life.” Proverbs 3: 1-2
