Tom Hanks stars as Finch, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors of a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland. But Finch, who has been living in an underground bunker for a decade, has built a world of his own that he shares with his dog, Goodyear. He creates a robot, played by Caleb Landry Jones, to watch over Goodyear when he no longer can. As the trio embarks on a perilous journey into a desolate American West, Finch strives to show his creation, who names himself Jeff, the joy and wonder of what it means to be alive. Their road trip is paved with both challenges and humor, as it's as difficult for Finch to goad Jeff and Goodyear to get along as it is for him to manage the dangers of the new world. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Finch may not be the most memorable post-apocalyptic story, but Tom Hanks proves perfectly charming company even after the collapse of civilization.

Finch is frustratingly slow, but even in its dullest moments, Tom Hanks keeps you watching.

Jason Bailey The Playlist The trouble with this kind of mix-tape moviemaking is that when your film is dominated by echoes, it's difficult to make your own voice heard. Dec 28, 2021 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Hanks does what he can with this demeaning material, because he always gives his best, but what can you do with a movie where the dog gets all the good close-ups? Rated: 2/5 Nov 12, 2021 Full Review Kimber Myers Crooked Marquee For a film where just one of the three named characters is an actual person, Finch exists as a surprisingly moving exploration of what it means to be human. BC Good story, good acting (You can't go wrong with Tom Hanks and a cute dog as the stars...). I realize that this film presented a boots-on-the-ground, tactical perspective, and not a big picture view, but I wish the story would have provided a little more meat around the background of how he got to the place he was. Still, it was a very enjoyable flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/21 Full Review Daniela S A great moving. Teaching the value of love, live, world and friendship. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Vander A It was almost Cast Away on dry land although not as good. But who else on the screen by himself for near 2 hours could keep the audience entertained? Tom Hanks is great as usual and the premise is interesting. Movie could have had more depth but it's worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Audience Member Tom Hanks is just amazing in this movie. His interactions with the robot and dog are on key. This movie is a must see for Sci-Fi fans with a side of the apocalypse. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Audience Member Movie was entertaining. Laughed a few times and the ending got me teary eyed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/24 Full Review Tim M Finch's narrative structure is a little like Swiss cheese, but an ever-endearing Tom Hanks and robot companion keeps it ticking.
