Paris 2024: a responsible technical deployment like no other

For the first time in history, the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee has entrusted Orange as the single operator to deliver the connectivity requirements for the event based on our unparalleled technical expertise. With more than 20 years of experience as an official technical and connectivity supplier to major supporting events, we’ll be putting our expertise to good use, to offer high quality and responsible connectivity services for this global competition.

A first in terms of our technological deployment

We are working to deploy a resilient and responsible technology infrastructure, covering more than 120 venues, including stadiums and iconic venues across France. This is the equivalent of 32 world championships running at the same time over a period of 29 days: 17 for the Olympics and 12 for the Paralympics.

This is the first time in history that such a deliverable has been entrusted to a single operator. Our goal is to provide exceptional connectivity to 4 billion TV viewers and 15 million spectators, which is why we’ve created a new “made in” Orange standard of excellence and connectivity experience to make the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games the most connected in history.

This challenge goes beyond a technological ambition: we are working to limit our carbon impact during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games as well and have an action plan in place to limit our emissions to 10,000 metric tons of CO2eq or lower for our entire technical deployment.

This is an ambitious target, made possible through technical advances and capitalizing where we can on our existing networks. We’re also ensuring that 70% of our deployments will be used in the long-term, renting 25% of our equipment, shipping most or our equipment via sea, and reusing least 75% of our dismantled equipment at the end of the competitions over the months to come.

This is the first time that an operator has calculated its carbon impact in a competition of this scale, and of course the first time that an operator has communicated the figures and commitment so transparently to establish a benchmark for comparison for future Games.

Innovation expertise

Fixed and mobile networks play a crucial role at official competition venues to ensure the smooth running of sporting events and improve the experience for the millions of spectators in the stadiums. Connectivity will also be essential in the Olympic Village, the Organising Committee’s key operations centers, press centers, and dozens of train stations and airports supporting the event.

Equite de kitesurf sur l'eau

To make the broadcasts even more vibrant, Orange's private 5G solution can be used to broadcast images from on-board mobile cameras at the heart of the events.

Some “Finger cams” will be used on the athletes’ boats, allowing live high-quality images to be broadcast around the world. During the sailing races and the kitesurfing competition, all images taken on the boats or captured by the kitesurfing athletes will be transmitted via Orange’s private 5G solution.

We’re also introducing our “Push To Talk” solution, another first in the history of the Olympic Games, enabling the organizing, emergency, and security teams to communicate securely by voice and video over extensive coverage. We plan to deploy 15,000 Push To Talk devices during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Groupe de joueurs, gros plan sur mains jointes

We’re planning to provide exceptional coverage for the Opening Ceremony, which will take place along the banks of the Seine. Nearly 160 boats will parade along a 6-kilometer route, offering one billion viewers the opportunity to follow the event via 100 HD cameras and private 5G technology to transmit images from the barges.

How our employees are committed to Paris 2024: when people bring technology to life

During the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, nearly 1,000 managers, network experts, IP engineers, and Orange technicians will be working full-time to ensure this major event runs without a hitch.
Success in terms of our teams and technology depends on our employees’ commitment and passion. Just like a team of athletes competing to win, teamwork and trust are key.

We wanted all Orange employees to be able to take part in the adventure, regardless of their role. Beyond the technical aspects, Paris 2024 is also an opportunity for all our teams to lend their expertise and energy to such a historic event.
