Self-assembled peptide-based hydrogels have attracted considerable interest from the research community. Particularly, low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) consisting of amino acids and short peptides are highly suitable for biological applications owing to their facile synthesis and scalability, as well as their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and stability in physiological conditions. However, challenges in understanding the structure–property relationship and lack of design rules hinder the development of new gelators with the required properties for several applications. Hereby, in the plethora of peptide-based gelators, this review discusses the mechanical properties of single amino acid and dipeptide-based hydrogels. A mutual analysis of these systems allows us to highlight the relationship between the gel mechanical properties and amino acid sequence, preparation methods, or N capping groups. Additionally, recent advancements in the tuning of the gels’ rheological properties are reviewed. In this way, the present review aims to help bridge the knowledge gap between structure and mechanical properties, easing the selection or design of peptides with the required properties for biological applications. Photoelectric dual-mode sensors, which respond to strain signal through photoelectric dual-signals, hold great promise as wearable sensors in human motion monitoring. In this work, a photoelectric dual-mode sensor based on photonic crystals hydrogel was developed for human joint motion detection. The optical signal of the sensor originated from the structural color of photonic crystals, which was achieved by tuning the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres diameter. The reflective peak of the sensor, based on 250 nm PMMA PCs, shifted from 623 nm to 492 nm with 100% strain. Graphene was employed to enhance the electrical signal of the sensor, resulting in a conductivity increase from 9.33 × 10⁻⁴ S/m to 2 × 10⁻³ S/m with an increase in graphene from 0 to 8 mg·mL⁻¹. Concurrently, the resistance of the hydrogel with 8 mg·mL⁻¹ graphene increased from 160 kΩ to 485 kΩ with a gauge factor (GF) = 0.02 under 100% strain, while maintaining a good cyclic stability. The results of the sensing and monitoring of finger joint bending revealed a significant shift in the reflective peak of the photoelectric dual-mode sensor from 624 nm to 526 nm. Additionally, its resistance change rate was measured at 1.72 with a 90° bending angle. These findings suggest that the photoelectric dual-mode sensor had the capability to detect the strain signal with photoelectric dual-mode signals, and indicates its great potential for the sensing and monitoring of joint motion. Addressing the high friction and torque challenges encountered in drilling processes for high-displacement wells, horizontal wells, and directional wells, we successfully synthesized OAG, a high-temperature and high-salinity drilling fluid lubricant, using materials such as oleic acid and glycerol. OAG was characterized through Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The research findings demonstrate the excellent lubricating performance of OAG under high-temperature and high-salinity conditions. After adding 1.0% OAG to a 4% freshwater-based slurry, the adhesion coefficient of the mud cake decreased to 0.0437, and at a dosage of 1.5%, the lubrication coefficient was 0.032, resulting in a reduction rate of 94.1% in the lubrication coefficient. After heating at 200 °C for 16 h, the reduction rate of the lubrication coefficient reached 93.6%. Even under 35% NaCl conditions, the reduction rate of the lubrication coefficient remained at 80.3%, indicating excellent lubrication retention performance. The lubricant OAG exhibits good compatibility with high-density drilling fluid gel systems, maintaining their rheological properties after heating at 200 °C and reducing filtration loss. The lubrication mechanism analysis indicates that OAG can effectively adsorb onto the surface of N80 steel sheets. The contact angle of the steel sheets increased from 41.9° to 83.3° before and after hot rolling, indicating a significant enhancement in hydrophobicity. This enhancement is primarily attributed to the formation of an extreme-pressure lubricating film through chemical reactions of OAG on the metal surface. Consequently, this film markedly reduces the friction between the drilling tools and the wellbore rocks, thereby enhancing lubrication performance and providing valuable guidance for constructing high-density water-based drilling fluid gel systems. Herein, we investigated hydrogels composed of boronic-acid-functionalized alginate and blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) of different molecular weights to control the release of metoclopramide hydrochloride as a function of pH and shear stress. The functionalization of alginate introduced dynamic covalent bonding and pH-responsive properties that can modulate network connectivity. The study investigated the viscoelastic properties of the hydrogels, their drug release profiles, and their responsiveness to changes in pH and shear forces. The results showed that a higher PVA molecular weight and alkaline pH conditions increased hydrogel viscosity and stiffness due to a more stable and interconnected network structure than acidic pH. Metoclopramide release revealed that the hydrogels exhibited pH-responsive drug release behavior. The drug was more readily released under acidic conditions due to the instability of sp²-hybridized boronate ester bonds. The influence of shear forces on the release of metoclopramide was also investigated at shear rates of 1, 10, and 100 s⁻¹, revealing their effect on matrix stiffening. Research shows that AlgBA/PVA hydrogels have unique properties, such as dynamic covalent bonding, that make them sensitive to external mechanical forces. This sensitivity makes them ideal for applications where physiological conditions trigger drug release. Full article

The “sol–gel method” was used to prepare spherical chitosan-modified bentonite (SCB) hydrogels in this study. The SCB hydrogels were characterized and used as sorbents to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, TG, and BET techniques. Various characterization results showed that the SCB adsorbent had fewer surface pores and a specific surface area that was 96.6% lower than the powder, but the layered mesoporous structure of bentonite remained unchanged. The adsorption process fit to both the Freundlich model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model showed that it was a non-monolayer chemical adsorption process affected by intra-particle diffusion. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity determined by the Langmuir model was 39.49 mg/g. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-increasing process. In addition, solid–liquid separation was easy with the SCB adsorbent, providing important reference information for the synthesis of SCB as a novel and promising adsorbent for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater at the industrial level. Carrageenans were widely utilized as thickening and gelling agents in the food and cosmetic industries, and their oligosaccharides have been proven to possess enhanced physicochemical and biological properties. In this study, Shewanella sp. LE8 was utilized for the depolymerization of κ-, ι-, and λ-carrageenan under conditions of fermentation. During a 24-h fermentation at 28 °C, the apparent viscosity of κ-, ι-, and λ-carrageenan decreased by 53.12%, 84.10%, and 59.33%, respectively, accompanied by a decrease in storage modulus, and loss modulus. After a 72-h fermentation, the analysis of methylene blue and molecular weight distribution revealed that ι-carrageenan was extensively depolymerized into smaller polysaccharides by Shewanella sp. LE8, while exhibiting partial degradation on κ- and λ-carrageenan. However, the impact of Shewanella sp. LE8 on total sugars was found to be limited; nevertheless, a significant increase in reduced sugar content was observed. The ESIMS analysis results revealed that the purified components obtained through ι-carrageenan fermentation for 72 h were identified as tetrasaccharides, while the two purified components derived from λ-carrageenan fermentation consisted of a hexasaccharide and a tetrasaccharide, respectively. Overall, the present study first reported the depolymerization of ι-and λ-carrageenan by Shewanella and suggested that the Shewanella could be used to depolymerize multiple carrageenans, as well as complex polysaccharides derived from red algae, to further obtain their oligosaccharides. Anti-VEGF agents, e.g., bevacizumab, are used in retinal surgery, while their interaction with silicone oils and novel hydrogels remains unclear. This study examines the in vitro pharmacokinetics of bevacizumab in silicone oil-filled eyes compared to various hydrogel replacements and the porcine vitreous body as well as its impact on the interface tension of silicone oils. An in vitro model filled with light or heavy silicone oil, porcine vitreous bodies, or hydrogels (alginate and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based) was equilibrated with a balanced salt solution. Monitoring of bevacizumab in the aqueous phase was conducted for up to 24 h, and its effect on interfacial tension was studied. Significant differences in bevacizumab partitioning were observed across endotamponades after 24 h. In silicone oils, bevacizumab was found exclusively in the aqueous phase, while in the other endotamponades, it accumulated in the gel phase (96.1% in porcine vitreous body, 83.5% in alginate, and 27.6% in PEG-based hydrogel). Bevacizumab significantly reduced interfacial tension (40 to 8 mN/m), possibly enhancing silicone oil emulsification. The type of endotamponade heavily influenced the bevacizumab concentration in the aqueous. The vitreous body and replacement hydrogels likely serve as a drug reservoir, highlighting the need for in vivo studies to explore these interactions prior to clinical application. Full article

Covalent cross-linked hydrogels based on chitosan and poly(maleic acid-alt-vinyl acetate) were prepared as spherical beads. The structural modifications of the beads during the preparation steps (dropping in liquid nitrogen and lyophilization, thermal treatment, washing with water, and treatment with NaOH) were monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy. The hydrogel beads have a porous inner structure, as shown by SEM microscopy; moreover, they are stable in acidic and basic pH due to the covalent crosslinking. The swelling degree is strongly influenced by the pH since the beads possess ionizable amine and carboxylic groups. The binding capacity for Cu²⁺ ions was examined in batch mode as a function of sorbent composition, pH, contact time, and the initial concentration of Cu²⁺. The kinetic data were well-fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic, while the sorption equilibrium data were better fitted with Langmuir and Sips isotherms. The maximum equilibrium sorption capacity was higher for the beads obtained with a 3:1 molar ratio between the maleic copolymer and chitosan (142.4 mg Cu²⁺ g⁻¹), compared with the beads obtained using a 1:1 molar ratio (103.7 mg Cu²⁺ g⁻¹). The beads show a high degree of reusability since no notable decrease in the sorption capacity was observed after five consecutive sorption/desorption cycles. Full article

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging treatment modality that utilizes light-sensitive compounds, known as photosensitizers, to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can selectively destroy malignant or diseased tissues upon light activation. This study investigates the incorporation of two porphyrin structures, 5-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(4-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin (P2.2.) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(4-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin (P2.1.), into hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogels for potential use in topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). The structural and compositional properties of the resulting hydrogels were characterized using advanced techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. FTIR spectra revealed a slight shift of the main characteristic absorption bands corresponding to the porphyrins and their interactions with the HPC matrix, indicating successful incorporation and potential hydrogen bonding. XRD patterns revealed the presence of crystalline domains within the HPC matrix, indicating partial crystallization of the porphyrins dispersed within the amorphous polymer structure. TGA results indicated enhanced thermal stability of the HPC–porphyrin gels compared to 10% HPC gel, with additional weight loss stages corresponding to the thermal degradation of the porphyrins. Rheological analysis showed that the gels exhibited pseudoplastic behavior and thixotropic properties, with minimal impact on the flow properties of HPC by P2.1., but notable changes in viscosity and shear stress with P2.2. incorporation, indicating structural modifications. AFM imaging revealed a homogeneous distribution of porphyrins, and UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy confirmed the retention of their photophysical properties. Pharmacotechnical evaluations showed that the hydrogels possessed suitable mechanical properties, optimal pH, high swelling ratios, and excellent spreadability, making them ideal for topical application. These findings suggest that the porphyrin-incorporated HPC hydrogels have significant potential as effective therapeutic agents for topical applications. Full article

In recent years, many researchers have focused on designing hydrogels with specific functional groups that exhibit high affinity for various contaminants, such as heavy metals, organic pollutants, pathogens, or nutrients, or environmental parameters. Novel approaches, including cross-linking strategies and the use of nanomaterials, have been employed to enhance the structural integrity and performance of the desired hydrogels. The evolution of these hydrogels is further highlighted, with an emphasis on fine-tuning features, including water absorption capacity, environmental pollutant/factor sensing and selectivity, and recyclability. Furthermore, this review investigates the emerging topic of stimuli-responsive smart hydrogels, underscoring their potential in both sorption and detection of water pollutants. By critically assessing a wide range of studies, this review not only synthesizes existing knowledge, but also identifies advantages and limitations, and describes future research directions in the field of chemically engineered hydrogels for water purification and monitoring with a low environmental impact as an important resource for chemists and multidisciplinary researchers, leading to improvements in sustainable water management technology. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) hydrogels are highly utilized in biomedical research due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and other versatile properties. This review comprehensively explores their synthesis, properties, sustained release mechanisms, and applications in drug delivery. The introduction underscores the significance of PLGA hydrogels in addressing challenges like short half-lives and systemic toxicity in conventional drug formulations. Synthesis methods, including emulsion solvent evaporation, solvent casting, electrospinning, thermal gelation, and photopolymerization, are described in detail and their role in tailoring hydrogel properties for specific applications is highlighted. Sustained release mechanisms—such as diffusion-controlled, degradation-controlled, swelling-controlled, and combined systems—are analyzed alongside key kinetic models (zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Peppas models) for designing controlled drug delivery systems. Applications of PLGA hydrogels in drug delivery are discussed, highlighting their effectiveness in localized and sustained chemotherapy for cancer, as well as in the delivery of antibiotics and antimicrobials to combat infections. Challenges and future prospects in PLGA hydrogel research are discussed, with a focus on improving drug loading efficiency, improving release control mechanisms, and promoting clinical translation. In summary, PLGA hydrogels provide a promising platform for the sustained delivery of therapeutic agents and meet diverse biomedical requirements. Future advancements in materials science and biomedical engineering are anticipated to further optimize their efficacy and applicability in clinical settings. This review consolidates the current understanding and outlines future research directions for PLGA hydrogels, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize therapeutic delivery and improve patient outcomes. Water pollution caused by dyes is a significant environmental issue, necessitating the development of effective, cost-efficient decolorization methods suitable for industrial use. In this study, a Chitosan-Fe polymeric gel was synthesized, characterized, and tested for removing the azo dye Direct Red 83:1 from water. The polymeric magnetic chitosan was analyzed using various techniques: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed a porous structure, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) demonstrated the thermal stability, Infrared Spectrophotometry (IR) indicated the successful coordination of iron at the C3 position, and X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) confirmed the crystalline nature of the polymeric structure. Optimal conditions for kinetic and isotherm models were found at 1 g and pH 7.0. Adsorption behavior of Direct Red 83:1 onto magnetic chitosan gel beads was studied through kinetic tests and isotherm curves. The maximum adsorption capacity was 17.46 mg/g (qmax). The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.999) and fit the Temkin isotherm (R² = 0.946), suggesting heterogeneous surface adsorption. The newly synthesized Chitosan-Fe polymeric gel demonstrated good adsorption properties and facilitated easy separation of purified water. Full article

Bacterial infection treatment for chronic wounds has posed a major medical threat and challenge. Bacteria at the wounded sites can compete with the immune system and subsequently invade live tissues, leading to more severe tissue damage. Therefore, there is an urgent demand for wound dressings with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Considering the concept of moist healing, hydrogels with a three-dimensional (3D) network structure are widely used as wound dressings due to their excellent hydrophilicity, water retention properties, and biocompatibility. Developing antibacterial hydrogels for the treatment of infected wounds has been receiving extensive attention recently. This article categorizes antibacterial hydrogels according to their materials and antibacterial modes, and introduces the recent findings and progress regarding their status. More importantly, with the development of emerging technologies, new therapies are utilized to prepare antibacterial hydrogels such as nanoenzymes, photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and other external stimuli-responsive methods. Therefore, this review also examines their progress, challenges, and future trends as wound dressings. In the following studies, there will still be a focus on antibacterial hydrogels that have a high performance, multi-functions, and intelligence, especially biocompatibility, a high and long-lasting antibacterial property, responsiveness, and on-demand therapeutic ability. Thermochromic smart windows realize an intelligent response to changes in environmental temperature through reversible physical phase transitions. They complete a real-time adjustment of solar transmittance, create a livable indoor temperature for humans, and reduce the energy consumption of buildings. Nevertheless, conventional materials that are used to prepare thermochromic smart windows face challenges, including fixed transition temperatures, limited solar modulation capabilities, and inadequate mechanical properties. In this study, a novel thermochromic hydrogel was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl hydroxyethyl celluloses (HBPEC) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) by using a simple one-step low-temperature polymerization method. The HBPEC/PNIPAM hydrogel demonstrates a wide response temperature (24.1–33.2 °C), high light transmittance (T_lum = 87.5%), excellent solar modulation (ΔT_sol = 71.2%), and robust mechanical properties. HBPEC is a functional material that can be used to adjust the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the smart window over a wide range by changing the degree of substitution (DS) of the butoxy group in its structure. In addition, the use of HBPEC effectively improves the light transmittance and mechanical properties of the hydrogels. After 100 heating and cooling cycles, the hydrogel still has excellent stability. Furthermore, indoor simulation experiments show that HBPEC/PNIPAM hydrogel smart windows have better indoor temperature regulation capabilities than traditional windows, making these smart windows potential candidates for energy-saving building materials. There is great interest in developing effective therapies for the treatment of skin wounds accompanied by deep tissue losses and severe infections. We have attempted to prepare biohybrids formed of agglomerates of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with gelatin hydrogel beads (GEL beads) delivering bacteriophages (phages) as antibacterial agents and/or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) for faster and better healing, providing combined therapies for these types of skin wounds. The gelatin beads were produced through a two-step process using basic and/or acidic gelatins with different isoelectric points. Escherichia coli (E. coli) and its specific T4 phages were propagated. Phages and/or bFGF were loaded within the GELs and their release rates and modes were obtained. The phage release from the basic GEL beads was quite fast; in contrast, the bFGF release from the acidic GEL beads was sustained, as anticipated. MSCs were isolated from mouse adipose tissues and 2D-cultured. Agglomerates of these MSCs with GEL beads were formed and maturated in 3D cultures, and their time-dependent changes were followed. In these 3D culture experiments, it was observed that the agglomerates with GEL beads were very healthy and the MSCs formed tissue-like structures in 7 days, while the MSC agglomerates were not healthy and shrunk considerably as a result of cell death. Chemiluminescence in solution-based systems has been extensively studied for the chemical analysis of biomolecules. However, investigations into the control of chemiluminescence reactions in gel-based systems, which offer flexibility in reaction conditions (such as the softness of the reaction environment), have only recently begun in polymer materials, with limited exploration in low-molecular-weight gelator (LMWG) systems. In this study, we investigated the chemiluminescence behaviors in the gel states using LMWG systems and evaluated their applicability to fluorescent-dye-containing molecular organogel systems/oxidant-containing aqueous systems. Using diethyl succinate organogels composed of 12-hydroxystearic acid as a molecular organogelator, we examined the fluorescent properties of various fluorescent dyes mixed with oxidant aqueous solutions. As the reaction medium transitioned from the solution to the gel state, the emission color and chemiluminescence duration changed significantly, and distinct characteristics were observed, for each dye. This result indicates that the chemiluminescence behavior differs significantly between the solution and gel states. Additionally, visual inspection and dynamic viscoelastic measurements of the mixed fluorescent dye-containing molecular gels and oxidant-containing aqueous solutions confirmed that the chemiluminescence induced by the mixing occurred within the gel phase. Furthermore, the transition from the solution to the gel state may allow for the modulation of the mixing degree, thereby enabling control over the progression of the chemiluminescence reaction. Hydrogel materials based on sodium alginate find versatile applications in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering due to their unique properties, such as biocompatibility and biodegradability, and the possibility of the customization of their mechanical properties, such as in terms of the individual requirements of separate clinical applications. These materials, however, have numerous limitations in the area of biological activity. In order to eliminate their limitations, sodium alginate is popularly applied in combination with added gelatin, which represents a product of collagen hydrolysis. Despite numerous beneficial biological properties, matrix materials based on gelatin have poor mechanical properties and are characterized by their ability for rapid degradation in an aqueous environment, particularly at the physiological temperature of the body, which significantly limits the independent application opportunities of this type of composition in the range of scaffolding production dedicated for tissue engineering. Collagen hydrogels, unlike gelatin, are characterized by higher bioactivity, dictated by a greater number of ligands that allow for cell adhesion, as well as better stability under physiological conditions. Fish-derived collagen provides a material that may be efficiently extracted without the risk of mammalian prion infection and can be used in all patients without religious restrictions. Considering the numerous advantages of collagen indicating its superiority over gelatin, within the framework of this study, the compositions of hydrogel materials based on sodium alginate and fish collagen in different concentrations were developed. Prepared hydrogel materials were compared with the properties of a typical composition of alginate with the addition of gelatin. The rheological, mechanical, and physicochemical properties of the developed polymer compositions were evaluated. The first trials of 3D printing by extrusion technique using the analyzed polymer solutions were also conducted. The results obtained indicate that replacing gelatin with fish collagen at an analogous concentration leads to obtaining materials with a lower swelling degree, better mechanical properties, higher stability, limited release kinetics of calcium ions cross-linking the alginate matrix, a slowed process of protein release under physiological conditions, and the possibility of extrusion 3D printing. The conducted analysis highlights that the optimization of the applied concentrations of fish collagen additives to composition based on sodium alginate creates the possibility of designing materials with appropriate mechanical and rheological properties and degradation kinetics adjusted to the requirements of specific applications, leading to the prospective opportunity to produce materials capable of mimicking the properties of relevant soft tissues. Thanks to its excellent bioactivity and lower-than-gelatin viscosity of the polymer solution, fish collagen also provides a prospective solution for applications in the field of 3D bioprinting. Cellulose nanofibers (NF) were extracted from kapok fibers using TEMPO oxidation, followed by a combination of mechanical grinding and ultrasonic processing. The TEMPO-mediated oxidation significantly impacted the mechanical disintegration behavior of the kapok fibers, resulting in a high NF yield of 98%. This strategy not only improved the fibrillation efficiency but also reduced overall energy consumption during NF preparation. An ultralight and highly porous NF-based aerogel was successfully prepared using a simple ice-templating technique. It had a low density in the range of 3.5–11.2 mg cm⁻³, high compressional strength (160 kPa), and excellent thermal insulation performance (0.024 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹). After silane modification, the aerogel displayed an ultralow density of 7.9 mg cm⁻³, good hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 128°, and excellent mechanical compressibility with a high recovery of 92% at 50% strain. Benefiting from the silene support structure, it showed a high oil absorptive capacity (up to 71.4 g/g for vacuum pump oil) and a remarkable oil recovery efficiency of 93% after being reused for 10 cycles. These results demonstrate that our strategy endows nanocellulose-based aerogels with rapid shape recovery and high liquid absorption capabilities. Full article

Amino acid-derived self-assembled nanofibers comprising supramolecular chiral hydrogels with unique physiochemical characteristics are highly demanded biomaterials for various biological applications. However, their narrow functionality often limits practical use, necessitating the development of biomaterials with multiple features within a single system. Herein, chiral co-assembled hybrid hydrogel systems termed LPH-EGCG and DPH-EGCG were constructed by co-assembling L/DPFEG gelators with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) followed by cross-linking with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hyaluronic acid (HA). The developed hybrid hydrogels exhibit superior mechanical strength, self-healing capabilities, and adhesive properties, owing to synergistic non-covalent interactions. Integrating hydrophilic polymers enhances the system’s capacity to demonstrate favorable swelling characteristics.
