Here are some tips to make the most of your recycling efforts. 💧 Rinse cans to remove food or liquid residue ♻️Check with your local recycling center about removing paper labels 🥫 For canned goods, completely remove the lid and place it inside the can after rinsing 🚮 Remove plastic lids from aerosol cans and recycle them with other plastics 🚫 Don't crush aluminum cans before recycling to prevent contamination Metals are nonrenewable resources, so recycling your cans is crucial. As many of you may know, we’ve been waiting for an important vote in Europe to determine the future use of BPA in food and beverage packaging. Late last week, the Plant Animal Food and Feed (PAFF) standing committee, comprised of national experts representing EU governments and public authorities, reviewed and APPROVED the European Commission’s draft regulation restricting BPA and other bisphenols used in food and beverage metal packaging.   With the PAFF approval, the draft legislation will now go to the EU Parliament and EU Council for ratification, which is expected to take place in Q4 of this year. If ratified, we expect to see an 18-month transition period or Q2 2026, for internal coatings, and 36 months or Q4 2027, for external coatings to completely eliminate BPA in all materials including imported goods. This proposal came about after the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a report in April 2023 recommending that the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of BPA be significantly reduced. France banned BPA in 2015, so this step to ban BPA and some other bisphenols across the EU is just one more step in the overall progression to address materials of concern in food and beverage packaging. PPG’s team is closely monitoring these and other regulations happening across the globe. Have you ever noticed that canned food goods come in all shapes and sizes? PPG NUTRISHIELD®, our range of internal liners for food cans, is versatile enough to coat all types of cans for a wide range of filling goods.  3-piece cans: Just as the name suggests, these cans consist of three components – the can body, and top end or easy-open-end, and a separate bottom - which are seamed to the body. The coatings are applied on flat metal and the can is then shaped. 2-piece Drawn and Redrawn (DRD) cans: Coatings are applied on flat metal sheets which are then ‘punched’ and shaped into its desired shape and size. 2-piece Draw Wall Ironing (DWI) cans: A different process from the others, this can is shaped first and coatings are applied after. Easy-Open-End (EOE) cans: Found on the top of 2-piece and 3-piece cans, these ends provide easy access to the contents inside the can without the use of a can opener thanks to the ring pull tab.
