Providing a safe, comfortable, and clean environment for New York City Public Schools students, families, and staff.

About us

The NYC Department of Education provides a safe, clean and comfortable environment that is conducive for educating and nurturing our children. The DOE provides comprehensive maintenance, repair, and safe operation of approximately 130 million square feet of floor space in the 1,300 buildings throughout the five boroughs of the City of New York. Each school building has an onsite Custodial Engineer, along with a team of fire-persons, handy-persons and cleaners responsible for sanitization, garbage disposal, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, carpentry, painting, minor repairs and all other aspects of building maintenance. These teams are assisted by a group of mobile skilled trades mechanics who tackle complex work beyond the scope of building-based staff. Contact Us If you have any questions or concerns related to your building’s maintenance or cleanliness, please contact your school’s Principal or parent coordinator or call 311. Immediate emergencies, especially life threatening emergencies, or those involving urgent, time-critical issues of health and safety should always be reported to 911.

  • Employee Spotlight: Nirmala Isri-Ramsundar This month we spotlight Nirmala Isri-Ramsundar. A proud graduate of the NYC public school system, she obtained her bachelor's degree in Organizational Management from St. Joseph’s University, and furthered her education by graduating with a Dual Master’s degree, combining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Master of Science in Human Resources, also from St. Joseph’s University. Nirmala's commitment to excellence is evident in her numerous certifications, including a Refrigeration Universal License, Certified Construction Health and Safety Technician, Associate Safety Professional, and being a certified OSHA Trainer in various industries. With over three decades of experience spanning five major industries, Nirmala's career trajectory is notable. She worked in Labor and Delivery at a major NYC hospital, served as a production manager for a Fortune 500 advertising company, and worked as a Casualty Underwriter at American International Group. Seeking new challenges, she joined the NYC School Construction Authority, managing the overall safety and code compliance for capital improvement projects and the construction of new school buildings. In 2008, Nirmala brought her wealth of knowledge and experience to DSF as a Deputy Director, overseeing facility operations for the Borough of Staten Island, our largest school district. In her current role, Nirmala leads the daily facility operations and maintenance of over 97 public school buildings, totaling 8 million square feet in District 31. She finds fulfillment in executing challenging projects, such as renovating high school athletic fields, and major enhancement projects. Nirmala's dedication hasn't gone unnoticed; she has received a citation issued by Dr. Marion Wilison, District 31 superintendent, for outstanding work, both in our schools and community. This was coupled by receiving additional citations by The Staten Island Borough President's Office, The New York City Council and New York State Assembly’s Office. These additional citations were for recognizing the commitment and the ability to oversee the daily facility and maintenance operations of our Public Schools. “I enjoy seeing the results and the joy that our hard work brings to our public-school children daily.” One of Nirmala's most challenging projects involved renovating two high school athletic fields within a tight timeframe. Despite the obstacles, seeing the excitement on students' faces on opening day made it all worthwhile. Nirmala is a proud and devoted military spouse, supporting her husband, an active-duty veteran of the US Navy. She enjoys traveling and cherishes her role as a mother to her 16-year-old son. Nirmala Isri-Ramsundar's dedication, expertise, and passion make her an indispensable employee to the Division of School Facilities, ensuring the safety and well-being of students across Staten Island.
