NCCOS and partners funded a recent research expedition east of Cape Cod to gather data to support informed decision-making about offshore wind energy leasing and transmission cable routing. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has identified this area as high priority for mapping and habitat data collection in the Gulf of Maine due to upcoming offshore wind lease sale decisions. https://lnkd.in/ena64jeu Partners in this effort: University of Rhode Island, NOAA Ocean Exploration, NOAA Coast Survey #GulfOfMaine #CapeCod

Science serving coastal communities
About us
The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science was formed in 1999 as the focal point for NOAA’s coastal ocean science efforts. We help NOAA meet its coastal stewardship and management responsibilities, and we provide coastal managers with the scientific information necessary to decide how best to protect environmental resources and public health, preserve valued habitats, and improve the way communities interact with coastal ecosystems. Our work includes: -Coastal Change: Vulnerability, Mitigation, and Restoration -Marine Spatial Ecology -Social Science -Stressor Impacts and Mitigation

The central basin of Lake Erie provides drinking water to more than two million people along the Ohio coast. NCCOS is now delivering an operational hypoxia forecast for the region, designed to help water treatment plants manage water quality more effectively. https://lnkd.in/eMmM9Qyu #LakeErie #OhioCoast #WaterQuality

It’s Shark Week! Did you know that artificial reefs provide feeding grounds for sharks and other large ocean predators? In recent years artificial reefs have increased in popularity. But with data coming from multiple resources and in various formats, their spatial footprint is difficult to quantify. Our scientists are working with partners to calculate the first artificial reef footprint in the U.S. ocean. Click-a-Coral is back with its second batch of data. Help NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration scientists and partners explore and restore the mesophotic and deep-benthic regions of the Gulf of Mexico. Now, in addition to identifying different coral species, volunteers can help us in locating sponges and fish, too! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eRP6jnKY #GulfOfMexico #Coral

NCCOS scientists aboard the NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations Ship Pisces are helping document seafloor habitats using autonomous and remotely operated vehicles to inform protection and management in the Gulf of Mexico. This mission is focused on mapping, imaging, and obtaining samples from the seafloor to fill critical knowledge gaps following Deepwater Horizon, to contribute to the restoration of the deep Gulf habitats injured by the oil spill. An NCCOS-funded study simulating the dispersal and connectivity of red snapper larvae in the northern Gulf of Mexico showed that the eastern and western stocks differed in their dispersal characteristics, suggesting that these stocks should be managed separately. https://lnkd.in/eFSjpaea #GulfOfMexico
