The Space Force will integrate commercial satellites and systems into a broad range of missions, starting with satellite communications and space domain awareness, according to the new Commercial Space Strategy released April 10. The new strategy reaffirms the Defense Department’s broad Commercial Space Integration Strategy released last week, aiming to leverage commercial space capabilities in a way that goes beyond conventional Pentagon-industry partnership. Speaking at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo., Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman cited the example of commercial coal stations proving vital to the U.S. Navy during the Spanish American War. “The Navy’s operational infrastructure at that time was not complete without the commercial services completely incorporated,” Saltzman said. “In space operations, we have become more comfortable with using commercial capabilities to add capacity than we have with fully integrating commercial capabilities into our force design.” In a foreword to the strategy, Saltzman and Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for space acquisition Frank Calvelli added that they envision a future state when the Space Force has “hybrid space architectures” with U.S. military, commercial, and allied space systems. When combined with the growing threat posed by near-peer competitors in space, it became clear there was a need for a military service focused solely on pursuing superiority in the space domain.  For the last 60 years space capabilities have become essential to the way a modern military conducts operations. Investments in space capabilities have increased the effectiveness of operations in every other domain.  The U.S. military is faster, better connected, more informed, precise, and lethal because of space. The same premise—that space is critical—holds true for the average American; space capabilities are woven into the fabric of daily life.  Satellites connect people in every corner of the globe, monitor weather patterns, carry television broadcasts, and the timing and navigation services of the GPS constellation power global financial networks, enable international commerce, synchronize cell phone networks, and optimize critical infrastructure.  Access to and freedom to operate in space underpins our national security and economic prosperity. However, space is no longer free from conflict. Potential adversaries are seeking ways to deny the U.S. access to the space capabilities fundamental to our way of war and modern way of life. They have developed an array of threats, both on Earth and in orbit, that continue to grow in scope, scale, and complexity.  Today, the Guardians of the USSF have been called to protect and defend American interests and to ensure our forces, our allies, and the world never experience a day without space. What Does the Space Force Do? 4 Years After Its Birth, Glimpses of the Service’s Mission Emerge On Dec. 20, the Space Force is celebrating four years as a service. The smallest military branch, with around 8,600 service members, it’s shrouded in more secrecy than many of the others, leading to a seemingly perpetual question from the public: “What does the Space Force do?” Americans can see F-35s on an Air Force base's runway. They can see Army soldiers driving Humvees and watch Navy aircraft carriers ship off to sea. But you can't see outer space and, due to the highly classified nature of the Space Force's operations, broadcasting what it does is often not possible

Along with the U.S. Air Force, the Space Force is part of the Department of the Air Force, led by the secretary of the Air Force.[9] The military heads of the Space Force are the chief of space operations, who is one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and vice chief of space operations. The Space Force is the smallest U.S. armed service, consisting of 8,600 military personnel. The Space Force operates 77 spacecraft in total across various programs such as GPS, Space Fence, military satellite communications constellations, X-37B spaceplanes, U.S. missile warning system, U.S. space surveillance network, and the Satellite Control Network. Under the Goldwater–Nichols Act, the Space Force is responsible for organizing, training, and equipping space forces, which are then presented to the unified combatant commands, predominantly to United States Space Command, for operational employment. The U.S. Space Force traces its roots to the beginning of the Cold War, with the first military space programs starting in 1945. In 1954, the Air Force established the Western Development Division, the world's first dedicated space organization, under General Bernard Schriever and unified its space forces under Air Force Space Command in 1982. U.S. space forces have participated in every U.S. conflict since the Vietnam War, most notably in the Persian Gulf War, often referred to as the first "space war". The first discussion of a U.S. Space Force occurred under President Dwight Eisenhower's administration in 1958 and it was nearly established in 1982 by President Ronald Reagan as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative. The 2001 Space Commission argued for the creation of a Space Corps around 2007–2011, but due to the September 11 attacks and war on terror any plans were put on hold. In 2017, Representatives Jim Cooper and Mike Rogers' proposal for a Space Corps passed the House but failed in the Senate. In 2019, the House and Senate resolved their differences to pass the United States Space Force Act, and this was signed into law by President Donald Trump, establishing the U.S. Space Force as the first new independent military service since the Army Air Forces were reorganized as the U.S. Air Force in 1947.

France Contemplates Strategic Alliance with US in Space Defense Initiative - France is currently weighing an invitation from US Space Command to join Operation Olympic Defender, an American initiative aimed at bolstering space defense and preventing hostilities. The French Ministry of the Armed Forces has expressed that this potential partnership opens up new operational possibilities and conveys a message of strategic solidarity. However, France maintains that it will not relinquish operational control of its military space assets should it decide to participate. - For France, joining Operation Olympic Defender would signal its alignment with SPACECOM’s strategy, which encompasses both defensive and offensive measures to counter adversarial space capabilities in a conflict scenario. - https://lnkd.in/euSrEDmn

Exciting News! U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command, and U.S. Space Force have officially activated the U.S. Space Forces Europe and Africa (SPACE-EURAF) component command at a ceremony in Ramstein, Germany on Dec. 8, 2023. USSPACEFOR-EURAF is now the newest service component under EUCOM and AFRICOM, stationed at Ramstein Air Base. This move follows the footsteps of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and U.S. Central Command in establishing a space component. USSPACEFOR-EURAF, with approximately 30 members and commanded by U.S. Space Force Col. Max Lantz, will play a crucial role in supporting EUCOM’s space-based needs, including satellite navigation and communications. Gen. Michael Langley, commander for AFRICOM, emphasizes the commitment to collaborative space capabilities in Africa. “The activation of USSPACEFOR-EURAF highlights our dedication to strengthening collaborative space capabilities across the African continent," stated U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Michael Langley, commander for AFRICOM.
