Naval Postgraduate School's space education and research is invaluable to #USSPACECOM, as we continue to innovate new ways to ensure the warfighter has access to space-based capabilities, while also safeguarding the space domain for exploration and national defense.
The Secretary of the Navy’s Naval Space Summit kicks off this week, focused on the critical space capabilities necessary for maintaining maritime advantage. For the second year in a row, NPS is hosting the event – and for good reason. The school has been at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to meet naval space needs, and the leaders educated to employ them. “From a multidisciplinary standpoint, the diversity and richness of the subject matter expertise at NPS is fundamental to the successes of the students and the space program,” said NPS Associate Research Professor Wenschel Lan, acting chair of the Space Systems Academic Group (SSAG). NPS has a strong history of developing trailblazing leaders who have made their mark in space – 44 NASA astronauts, and counting, are NPS alumni! The school also recognized early on that developing technologies like standardized, modular CubeSats offered both educational opportunities and operational capabilities. Decades of hands-on, student-faculty research in small satellites and CubeSats has put several pieces of NPS-developed hardware in space - the latest took place last March, with the next launching this fall. “NPS continues to contribute to the Naval space enterprise by working hard to stay relevant in the ever-changing realm of crowded low-earth orbits and contested cislunar space,” said former Space Shuttle astronaut Dr. James Newman, Acting Provost of NPS. “Graduates from across NPS conduct thesis and capstone research of immediate and future impact and, even more importantly, are ready to contribute their updated critical thinking skills and space-related knowledge to the benefit of the country’s defense program.” Check out this latest article that chronicles how NPS graduate education and research in Space Systems Operations and Engineering builds on past successes to meet today’s talent and technology needs for an increasingly contested environment. • Read “From Astronauts to CubeSats, Space Education and Research at NPS Pushes Boundaries” - https://lnkd.in/gzGPfiNH • More about the NPS Space Systems Academic Group: https://nps.edu/web/ssag US Navy | United States Marine Corps | Office of the Secretary of the Navy | | Office of the Chief of Naval Operations | U.S. Pacific Fleet | U.S. Fleet Forces Command | National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) | Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition | U.S. Space Command | United States Space Force | Office of Naval Research | U.S. Naval Research Laboratory | Commander, Naval Information Forces | NAVWAR | NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
