This is an interesting update and it's great to see the focus of PEEL reports moving to the core challenges for policing in this day and age. It will take great leadership to improve police forces' interactions with victims of crime, as well as reducing and detecting more offences. I'll be interested to see how the leadership process (for all ranks) develops as a result of this approach.

Today marks the publication of our first reports in the PEEL inspection programme for 2023-25. PEEL (police effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy) is our regular assessment of all 43 police forces in England and Wales. We use our inspection findings, analysis and professional judgment to assess how forces are performing across many different areas of policing. Ultimately, the purpose of our PEEL assessments is to help police forces improve and in turn, make communities safer. Since we began our PEEL inspection programme in 2014, we have continuously reviewed and adapted our approach. The questions we ask in our assessments must adjust to changing priorities and circumstances in policing. Here are some of the key changes to our 2023-25 cycle: ✅ We’re more focused on outcomes for the public, particularly whether forces are achieving positive outcomes for victims and bringing offenders to justice. ✅ We'll assess how forces are working to improve leadership at all levels. ✅ We want to know how forces retain and develop their officers and staff. ✅ We'll be looking at problem-solving across the whole force.
