Spec ads get a lot of flack. And I get it, as a fan and advocate of applied/commercial creativity, work that works, ad effectiveness, etc. But a good idea remains a good idea, even when it isn't afforded the opportunity to live and do the doing. I don't feel obliged to go into too much depth on spec chatter as smarter folk have already said important things about it from both sides, recently too (h/t Tom Birts and his brilliant EasyJet/BA parody... "(since sharing) it’s got over a million impressions. If I thought it was going to do that, I’d have made it better" ❤️). But I do feel obliged to share this spec ad from Steven Lownes. Not only did it immediately find a warm place in my mind, over 10 years ago now when I first saw it, but because, as Steven told me this week, he did it as a junior creative trying to get noticed. And people noticed. I'm happy they did. Because if it hadn't, Steven and the other talent at BBC Creative he works alongside *might* not've just released ‘The Heaviest Backpack’ 🎒. Last night I was watching some interesting nostalgic videos from the 90's-2000's. It was commercials and ads/jingles. - Reese's Puffs Rap - Head on Apply Directly to the forehead ( This ad repeated itself Three times) - Oh Oh Oh O'Reilly Auto Parts - The best part of waking up is folders in your cup - F-R-E-E That spells FREE credit report dot com baby - Oink Oink Zoopals - For a great young rate you can get online go to the general and save some time Every one of these campaigns focuses on consistency and frequency while giving it time to catch on. Not one of these campaigns were under One year in length. Now it is something we still remember 15 years later. It mixed frequency with an emotional response and a catchy jingle to be successful. Why would anyone think a Three month radio campaign would be substantial enough to create the same result? We live in a world of instant gratification where we want everything now. You put in effort today and you want the result tomorrow. This does not work at the gym, This does not work with investments, and unfortunately this is not how it works with advertising. Think long term and have the ability to see the long picture after a year of consistent branding and advertising. I promise you, you will create a brand that will continue to live on in the minds of others.

As a marketing practitioner, subway ads don't easily get my attention. But I feel this ad not only got my attention but did an impressive job overall and thought to share it. I feel it's fabulous for three reasons: Super-catchy: The combination of the copy and zero-star image immediately gets anybody's attention. Minimalistic: Not many elements are used. No rush. Attention goes straight to messaging. The Satan part 😂: I hope their team took consent from Satan to use his name in the ad. But anyway, they used creativity at its best 🙌🏻. Any thoughts? Worth a watch!! Brand affinity = the emotional connection between customers and companies. When companies demonstrate shared values, they can influence the entire buying journey with that emotional bond.

FireTeam posted a complicated and overwhelming static ad that killed it on ROAS ⏩ then made a much less complicated V2 that tanked ⏩ and then re-complicated it and bumped ROAS right back up 🤑 Interesting takeaways from Jess Bachman: "~*~*~ 1️⃣ Every brand is different, and large brands have multiple audiences with different tastes. It's important to recognize this. You may find an ad like this a lot of mental work, but there is a large group of people who WANT to put in the work to find a great deal. 2️⃣ The reason we even made this ad in the first place is because we saw that this offer language, which is in every ad, worked better when it was above the 'see-more' in the copy. It wanted attention. We took the next logical step and made it the star of the creative. Wait, is this an ad? This morning, I spent around 10 seconds watching a YouTube short, before noticing it was an ad. The guy who made that ad is a total genius. He had to understand what type of shorts I enjoy watching and don’t skip, and then make a weird ad similar to it. The level of customer understanding of that brand is on another level. What did they gain? They reached the holy grail every marketer dream of. They managed to grab my attention for 10 seconds and peacefully transfer their message to a totally receptive and open mind, and they did it in a fully crowded and saturated environment, where every millisecond of attention counts, and where other ads get skipped 99% in less than a second. Their understanding of my behaviour as a customer was sufficient for them to identify precisely: - The right channel - The right type of content - The right content format - The right message - The right target What contents are your customers consuming everyday? On which platform? How often? Why are they so obsessed by this configuration? The sooner you get it, the greater the cash prize.
