In celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month, Lake Trust team member David W. reflects on his roots and how he shares the culture with his family and community. #nationalcaribbeanamericanheritagemonth #caribbean “I think that it is great that we recognize and honor Caribbean heritage. We have a unique location in-between the continents that gives the Caribbean a culture that feeds off both North and South America. And although Caribbean Americans have mostly settled in the large urban centers of New York, Florida, and Toronto, it’s important to recognize the significance of Caribbean people throughout the continents. Personally, I have always felt welcome in every community I have lived in in the US and have found a home among Caribbean Americans. I am a proud Caribbean immigrant and have shared my heritage with my kids in the use of culture, cuisine and visiting my home islands so that they know their roots as well.”

Your most authentic self is a powerful force. And when you share your power, you can inspire others to share their power too. To celebrate Pride Month, we’re encouraging team members to take part in virtual learning sessions and group activities focused on how to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community in the workplace. To continue the conversation beyond Lake Trust, our team is invited to consider joining CU Pride, an organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ team members and allies within the credit union industry. When we take the time to have conversations, share experiences, and learn from one another, we can collectively strengthen a sense of belonging and inclusion in our communities. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, the last group of enslaved people were officially freed after Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3. Juneteenth (also referred to as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day) was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, although many states and communities have hosted celebrations for far longer.
