Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, stands as a poignant commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved Black individuals in the United States. The Intrepid Museum has undertaken a rigorous examination of Intrepid's complex history through our Full Muster project. This introspective initiative confronts the vessel's past, marred by segregation and inequality. We are saddened by the passing of Joe Engle at the age of 91. A pioneering astronaut, Engle made history by becoming the first to fly two different winged vehicles in space. Engle served on Apollo missions and played a crucial role as the test astronaut for the space shuttle Enterprise, validating its ability to glide and land safely. Over his incredible career, Engle logged nine days, eight hours, and 30 minutes in space, circling Earth 149 times. With Engle's death, all 12 pilots who flew the X-15 are now deceased.
