Sweden Innovation Days, part of the global innovation arena, is a free digital conference with a call to action to achieve green transition. Noted on Caffeine daily, is the Climate Tech Summit Aotearoa on the 20th of June. It is good to see this conference offering free places and there is an unwritten rule that this will invite in the outliers. History tells us the outliers are bound to be disruptive, but history also tells us the way we organise conferences does not welcome disruptors in a tightly held program. I have noted that this forces the disruptors to band together to form alternative groups that further alienates them from the discussion. Thus, losing the opportunity to question assumptions. I have no concrete suggestions to make as to how conferences might be organised in the future, but I do know that the current accepted format is tired and in need of a rethink. Once again without knowing how this will be conducted, I do know what the hallmark of a good conference must be. It must not relegate different thinkers to the classic breakout model where the status quo inevitably prevails. Being human, we rush to early consensus, especially as breakouts are carefully timed. New ideas worth considering can only come from the clash of perspectives and must be curated by those with insight. Our world is suffering from speed thinking when we know in our hearts that too much is overlooked to guarantee long term success for people, planet and dare I say profit.

This is a picture my friend Boris Wasmuth took while I attended his famous Berlin 2.0 gathering of influential and pioneering digital entrepreneurs and investors this past week. I would look full of “Schadenfreude”. No, I was rather totally happy about what I have realized in that very moment: #cleantech and #climatetech business models are not only a trendy investment opportunity anymore, but considered an essential strategy to combat the #climate crisis through the financial, creative and technical power of more and more investors and entrepreneurs. This year’s knowledge conference #PAKCon23 of Project A Ventures was even more explicit with it’s theme “The Obvious” - the climate crisis (one out of a few others) is, in fact, predictable and a truth that is so obvious we sometimes simply ignore it, but nevertheless we need to tackle. Thoroughly enjoyed the “Tipping points: Time horizons and agency as key to change” seminar organised by ÆRA Strategic Innovation during Oslo Innovation Week. The primary focus was on the ways of working systematically with strategy and innovation in addressing some of our biggest challenges. The presenters touched upon social tipping points and actor-driven change, as well as temporalities of climate change and social tipping. Here is the main idea I am taking home with me. 'We make decisions based on the socially constructed concept of time, but they don’t match the timeline of climate change and social tipping. There is an apparent mismatch between the timescapes of modern democracies and climate tipping points'. Futures thinking, systemic and long-term approaches to solving planetary crises, and a beyond-my-term-in-office mentality are absolutely needed! As well as deeper reflections on whether our actions correspond with responsibility for their long-term effects. Thank you for facilitating such an important conversation, Eirik Langås.
